**Quick answer:** Alberta corporations file a [T2 corporate return](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html) with the CRA six months after fiscal year-end, and Alberta charges no provincial sales tax — only 5% GST. EverStone is a Canadian CPA firm handling Alberta T2 filings, GST returns and bookkeeping entirely online, with a fixed fee quoted in writing before work begins. Published fees start at $125 for a personal return and $325 a month for bookkeeping.

For an incorporated contractor the file adds the AT1, the T5018 slips and the lien holdback to the T2 — [the Alberta contractor page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant-alberta) works through all three.

For contractors in Alberta the file adds T5018 slips and WCB Alberta to the T2 and the AT1.

Alberta removes a return, not the rest of the compliance.

Alberta tax at a glance

## No PST, the lowest general rate, and what that means for an oilfield contractor

Alberta is the only province with **no provincial sales tax** — you charge just the 5% federal GST, which makes sales-tax compliance simpler than almost anywhere else in Canada.

Alberta also has the **lowest general corporate rate** in the country at 23% combined (15% federal + 8% Alberta), and a small-business rate of 11% combined. For a growing Alberta corporation, that low general rate matters as soon as you pass the small-business limit.

Not charging PST is a real operational simplification, not just a lower bill: there’s no second tax account to register, no separate return on a different filing cycle, and no exemption list to memorize for every invoice line. That matters most for contractors who bill across provincial lines, an Alberta-based service corporation doing work for a Saskatchewan or BC client still has to think about that client’s provincial tax, but its own home-province invoicing stays a single-tax exercise.

The lower general rate carries its own weight for Alberta’s energy-services sector specifically. Service-rig operators, consulting corporations and oilfield contractors often carry heavy equipment and day-rate contracts, which push revenue past the small-business limit faster than a typical consultancy does. The gap between Alberta’s 23% general rate and the 27%+ charged in most other provinces then compounds every year income sits above that limit.

Alberta sales tax and corporate tax rates at a glance
| Sales tax | 5% GST only (no PST) |
| Small-business corporate rate | 11% combined (9% federal + 2% Alberta) |
| General corporate rate | 23% combined — lowest in Canada |
| Small-business limit | $500,000 |

Need the full set rather than the summary? The [Alberta tax facts tables](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) set out the corporate rates, the sales tax position, the provincial payroll levies, the workers’ compensation authority and the registry filing, each with its government source and the date it was checked.

Who we help in Alberta

## Who we serve across Alberta’s energy & construction economy

Alberta’s business mix leans heavily toward variable, contract-driven income — day-rate oilfield work, project-based construction, and consulting arrangements that can look, to CRA, uncomfortably close to employment. That pattern shapes what we watch for most closely on an Alberta file:

### Energy & oilfield services

Owner-operators, service-rig and consulting corporations with variable day-rate income, heavy equipment CCA claims, and GST self-assessment questions when work crosses provincial lines.

### Construction & trades

Calgary and Edmonton trades managing holdbacks, [T5018](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#t5018) subcontractor reporting and the timing of incorporation once income clears the point where the small-business rate starts paying for itself.

### Professional & consulting

Independent consultants and professional corporations optimizing owner pay, with particular attention to contracts that risk being reassessed as [personal services business](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) income.

### Agriculture

Farms and agri-business with seasonal cash flow, capital assets and equipment depreciation planned around Alberta’s low general rate.

The full scope

## Everything an Alberta corporation needs, one CPA, one file

No PST return to layer on top — just the essentials, handled properly:

- **T2 corporate tax** returns & Alberta year-end statements
- **GST filed** — no separate PST return required
- **Bookkeeping & payroll** on the cloud
- **Personal T1 returns** coordinated with your Alberta corporation
- **Salary-vs-dividend planning** built around Alberta’s low rates
- **CRA support** and year-round advice

The issue we see most often

## Why “no PST” isn’t the same as “no sales-tax risk”

Alberta owners often assume that because their home province charges no PST, sales tax is a non-issue for their corporation. It usually is — right up until the business sells or ships into another province. GST/HST [place-of-supply](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#place-of-supply) rules generally require you to charge the destination province’s rate, not Alberta’s, once goods or certain services cross provincial lines. That means an Alberta-based contractor doing a job in Saskatchewan or a consultant billing a BC client can end up needing to apply a rate they never have to think about at home. We track where your revenue is actually coming from so the right tax gets applied, not just the Alberta default.

The second pattern we watch for is specific to how Alberta’s energy and consulting sectors contract: a single operator, ongoing day-to-day direction, and a corporation that in practice functions like an employee on the operator’s site. CRA can reassess that arrangement as a personal services business, which strips away most of the deductions and the small-business rate that made incorporating worthwhile in the first place. We review how your contracts and working relationships are structured before that risk turns into a reassessment.

Common questions

## Alberta accounting FAQ

**Which Alberta cities do you work with?**

All of them, online. City pages cover [Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary), [Edmonton](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton), [Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-airdrie), [Red Deer](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-red-deer), [Lethbridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-lethbridge), [Medicine Hat](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-medicine-hat), [St. Albert](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-st-albert), [Sherwood Park](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-sherwood-park), [Grande Prairie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-grande-prairie) and [Fort McMurray](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-fort-mcmurray); owners anywhere else in the province get the same service and fees.

**Does “no PST” mean my Alberta business collects no sales tax at all?**

Not quite. Alberta itself charges no provincial sales tax, but if you sell or ship into an HST or PST province, place-of-supply rules can require you to collect that province’s tax on those sales. We track where your customers are and apply the right rate. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How does Alberta’s low general corporate rate help once I’m past the small-business limit?**

Income above the small-business limit is taxed at Alberta’s 23% combined general rate, the lowest in Canada. Equipment-heavy energy-services and construction corporations often exceed the limit sooner than a typical consultancy because of how quickly capital-intensive revenue grows, so that lower general rate has an outsized effect on what they keep.

**Could CRA treat my oilfield consulting contract as employment income?**

It’s a real risk for a consultant working one contract, under one operator’s day-to-day direction, for most of the year — CRA can reassess that as a personal services business, which strips away most corporate deductions and the small-business rate. We review how your contracts are structured to keep that risk in check.

**What is the small-business tax rate in Alberta?**

About 11% combined (9% federal + 2% Alberta) on active business income up to the $500,000 limit. Income above that, or income that isn’t active business income, is taxed at the 23% general rate.

**How do we work together without an office visit?**

Entirely online, with video calls, secure document upload and CRA e-filing. You get the same named CPA on your file all year, wherever in Alberta you’re based.

**What sales tax filings does an Alberta corporation still have?**

GST returns, on the same schedule as everywhere else. Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so there is no second provincial return to file, but the moment you invoice a customer in an HST province, place-of-supply rules can require you to charge that province’s HST rate. Alberta businesses selling across the country are the ones this catches most often.

**Does Alberta have an employer health tax or payroll levy?**

No. Alberta has no provincial payroll tax equivalent to the health levies some other provinces charge, so an Alberta employer’s payroll obligations are CPP, EI and income tax remittances to CRA, plus WCB coverage where required. That makes Alberta payroll simpler to run, but the CRA remittance deadlines and director liability for unremitted deductions are identical.

**What does an accountant cost for an Alberta business?**

Personal tax returns start from $125 and monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month, with GST/HST filing included; a corporate return is quoted after we review your enquiry, once the books have been seen. Every fee is fixed in writing before work starts. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Which parts of Alberta do you serve?**

All of it. The work is done remotely, so a business in Calgary, Edmonton and the rest of the province gets the same service, the same fixed fees and the same CPA.

**Fixed fees**Clear, fixed pricing. You approve the fee before any work begins. No surprise bills.

**One day**We reply to every enquiry within one business day, usually the same day.

**CPA-led**Every file is handled personally by a CPA, never passed to junior staff.

**No obligation**Sending an enquiry is free, with zero pressure and no obligation.
