# *Calgary*’s CPA for Energy-Services Firms & Independent Consultants

EverStone CPA works with incorporated energy-services businesses and consultants across Calgary entirely online — corporate tax, bookkeeping and clear advice from a dedicated CPA, at a fixed fee with no hourly surprises. Businesses in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere are served the same way.

**Who we help here:** Oilfield and energy-services contractors, equipment and field-services companies, and independent engineering or technical consultants. Their revenue moves with the commodity cycle, and they need an accountant who plans for that, not one who’s surprised by it.

**Quick answer:** Calgary owners get a simpler sales-tax picture than most of Canada — no [provincial sales tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#pst), GST only. EverStone handles corporate tax, bookkeeping, GST and salary-versus-dividend planning for incorporated Calgary businesses entirely online, at a fixed fee quoted before work starts. Published fees start at $125 for a personal return and $325 a month for bookkeeping.

Why EverStone

## A CPA who understands cycles, not just returns

Calgary’s energy-services sector doesn’t run on a steady monthly curve. Revenue can swing hard between a strong year and a slow one, and a lot of accountants only show up at tax time regardless of which kind of year you just had. We work with you year-round, using Alberta’s simple no-PST tax environment and the province’s low corporate rate to help you plan cash reserves and owner compensation around the cycle, not just file after the fact.

Every Calgary client works with one Chartered Professional Accountant who knows the file continuously, not a different preparer each spring. Everything runs by video and phone, with a fee that’s fixed and agreed before any work starts.

## Which return applies to you

Which return applies to you
The structure you trade under decides the return — for a business operating in Calgary, Alberta

| If you are | You file |

| A sole proprietor | A T1 personal return with form T2125 for the business |

| An incorporated business | A T2 corporate return, with financial statement schedules |

| A partnership | A T5013 partnership return where required, plus each partner’s own return |

| Employed with a side business | A T1 that reports both the T4 income and the T2125 business |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST only. Alberta levies no provincial sales tax |

Alberta tax, and what ‘no PST’ really means

## The upside of operating in the one province with no sales tax

Fewer returns to file, but the corporate-rate advantage matters more than the tax-simplicity headline.

### No provincial sales tax

Alberta is the only province that charges **no PST or RST at all** — your business deals only with the 5% federal GST. For an energy-services firm invoicing equipment, labour and materials on the same job, that’s one less tax regime to apply correctly across every line item.

### The lowest general corporate rate in Canada

Alberta also carries the lowest general corporate tax rate of any province, and active small-business income is taxed at just 2% provincially on top of the 9% federal small-business rate. That is a real advantage if your income timing and owner-pay planning are structured to use it.

### Capital-heavy operations

Equipment-intensive energy-services businesses generate significant [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary) claims each year. We coordinate CCA claims with your income timing so equipment purchases work with your tax position instead of against your cash flow.

Services

## Accounting & tax services for Calgary businesses

Everything an incorporated Calgary business needs, under one roof — delivered online.

### [Corporate Tax (T2)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-services)

[T2 returns](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html) and year-end statements for Calgary’s incorporated energy-services firms, field-services companies and technical consultants, with GST and CRA correspondence built in.

### [Personal Tax (T1)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes)

Personal and owner T1 returns for Calgary business owners, planned around variable-income years so salary and dividend timing works with the cycle, not against it.

### [Bookkeeping & Payroll](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accounting-services)

Job-costed monthly bookkeeping and payroll for Calgary operators, so margin by project, not just overall revenue — is always visible.

### [GST Filing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-services)

GST registered and filed on schedule — no PST return to manage — reconciled cleanly against job costs and equipment purchases each period.

### [Business Advisory](https://www.everstonecpa.com/advisory-services)

Straight advice on equipment financing, cash reserves and growth timing for Calgary owners, from a CPA who understands the energy-services cycle.

### [Fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo)

Part-time CFO horsepower for scaling Calgary firms that need real forecasting through both strong and slow years, not just a bookkeeper.

Calgary’s owner-run energy-services economy

## Accounting built for a cyclical, capital-heavy business

Calgary’s economy still runs largely on energy services, engineering and technical consulting, and equipment and field-services companies that support them. These businesses share a pattern most generic bookkeeping doesn’t handle well. Revenue moves with commodity prices, heavy equipment purchases need careful [capital cost allowance planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada), and owner compensation decisions need to flex between a strong year and a lean one.

We build your bookkeeping, GST filing and T2 corporate tax around that reality. That means job costing that shows true margin, CCA planning that times equipment claims sensibly, and salary-versus-dividend advice that accounts for the year you’re actually having, not a generic average.

The issue we see most often

## Planning owner pay around a cycle, not a calendar year

Most tax planning advice assumes a business earns roughly the same amount every year, and structures salary-versus-dividend decisions around that assumption. Calgary’s energy-services businesses rarely work that way. A strong year tied to commodity prices or a major contract can be followed by a materially slower one. Decisions made assuming steady income can leave an owner with a large personal tax bill in a year the corporation didn’t actually generate much cash.

The planning that actually helps looks at multiple years together rather than one T2 at a time. In a strong year, that might mean holding more profit inside the corporation at the low small-business rate rather than pulling it all out as salary or dividends, so there’s a reserve to draw on when work slows. In a leaner year, it might mean paying yourself dividends from [retained earnings](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary) built up in better years, rather than taking a salary the corporation can’t comfortably support. Alberta’s lack of PST and its low general corporate rate both help here — with fewer moving tax pieces to track, there’s more room to focus planning on timing rather than compliance mechanics.

We treat your Calgary business’s tax planning as a multi-year exercise from the start: reviewing where retained earnings sit, coordinating equipment purchases and [capital cost allowance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/sole-proprietorships-partnerships/report-business-income-expenses/claiming-capital-cost-allowance.html) with income timing, and adjusting your salary-and-dividend mix as the cycle turns. The same formula is not applied regardless of what kind of year it’s been.

How it works

## Getting started, on your schedule

Three steps, handled securely online around your schedule.

1

### Send an enquiry

Tell us about your Calgary business on a video or phone call, and we come back with a fixed, no-obligation quote.

2

### Send your records securely

Share your books and prior filings by secure upload — we take over GST, bookkeeping and T2 from there.

3

### Stay compliant all year

We file on time, keep you CRA- and Alberta-compliant, and re-plan owner pay as the commodity cycle turns.

## Calgary industries we work with most

The Calgary businesses we work with are concentrated in energy services, engineering and technical consulting, construction and the professional firms that support them. Two things recur. The first is equipment: service companies carry real capital assets, and the class, the financing choice and the eventual disposal all move the tax outcome. The second is contract concentration, a consultant billing one operator for most of a year sits in the same [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada) territory as any single-client contractor.

Energy and technical services companies carry the heaviest equipment position of any group we act for. See [energy services accounting in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/energy-services-accountant-calgary). Regulated professionals who incorporate face a different set of questions again. See [professional corporations in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/professional-corporation-accountant-calgary).

Geography still shapes what a file looks like, even though the work is remote. Beltline clients tend to be small consultancies and professional practices in leased office space, with few fixed assets and a lot of contract income. Quarry Park skews to engineering and energy-services firms carrying real equipment on the books. Airdrie and Cochrane bring owner-operated trades and transport businesses working across the region, and Okotoks a mix of trades and local professional practices. None of that changes how we file — it changes what the return has to account for.

## How working with a Calgary business actually runs

Everything is remote, and deliberately so: you get a CPA who replies, not one who is close by. A first consultation runs by video or phone. Documents move through a secure upload rather than a courier or a drop-in, and signatures are electronic. Through the year you can email or call with a question and no bill follows it, because the fee is fixed and agreed before any work begins. That is the point: the questions worth asking usually arrive before a decision, not after.

The same CPA handles your file from start to finish, so the person who prepares your return is the person who answers your email. For Calgary owners that removes the two things that make an accountant hard to use: travel, and the hesitation to ask.

## What a Calgary client’s year looks like

Calgary clients tend to have income that follows project and drilling cycles rather than a smooth curve, which makes instalments easy to misjudge. We set them against the actual pattern. Books stay current through the year, planning happens before the year-end closes, and the corporate return follows the [fiscal year-end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#fiscal-year-end) with the [balance owing](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments.html) due earlier. With no provincial sales tax to file, the compliance calendar is genuinely lighter than a BC or Ontario equivalent.

We work with owner-managed businesses across Alberta. See [accounting in Alberta](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) for the provincial picture, or how a virtual CPA engagement works.

Common questions

## Questions from Calgary business owners

**How much does an accountant cost in Calgary?**

We charge fixed fees, quoted up front after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. Corporate tax returns and year-end financial statements are quoted individually after we review your enquiry; bookkeeping and personal tax are quoted based on your needs. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts, and working with us from Calgary costs the same as it does locally.

**Can an accountant outside Calgary file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. Federal filings can be prepared by a CPA anywhere in the country. The one Alberta difference worth knowing: the province administers its own corporate income tax, so there is a provincial return alongside the federal T2 — we prepare both.

**How do we exchange documents securely?**

Through a secure upload link, which matters when records are spread across a corporate card, a fuel account and a project management tool. You upload as you go or export monthly; we reconcile and send returns back for e-signature. Nothing sensitive travels as an unencrypted attachment.

**Do you understand Alberta tax rules?**

Yes, including the separate Alberta corporate return, its own instalment schedule, and the fact that Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so you deal with GST alone. Provincial specifics are part of the standard engagement, not an add-on.

**Does it matter that my accountant isn’t based in Calgary?**

Not for anything that affects your filings. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Alberta has no PST — does that mean sales tax is a non-issue for my business?**

It’s simpler than in a two-tax province, but not a non-issue. You still need to register for and file GST correctly, and if you sell into another province you may need to collect that province’s sales tax on those transactions. We track where you’re actually selling, not just where you’re based.

**My revenue swings a lot year to year — how does that affect my tax planning?**

Significantly. Salary-and-dividend decisions that assume steady income can leave you overpaying personal tax in a lean year or underusing the small-business rate in a strong one. We plan across multiple years, not just the current T2.

**I buy a lot of equipment for my energy-services business — how does that affect my taxes?**

Equipment purchases generate capital cost allowance claims that can be timed to work with your income rather than randomly. We coordinate major purchases with your year-end tax position as part of ongoing advisory, not just at filing time.

How it works remotely

## Working with a virtual tax accountant in Calgary

Alberta simplifies one thing and complicates another. There is no provincial sales tax, so an Alberta corporation deals with GST alone rather than the GST-plus-PST split a BC business manages — genuinely less administration. But Alberta administers its own corporate income tax separately from the CRA, which means a provincial return alongside the federal T2 and its own [instalment](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html) schedule to track.

Working with us online means that coordination is handled rather than delegated back to you: secure upload links for records, video meetings around your schedule, e-signature approvals, and a single CPA who knows which filing is due when. For Calgary consultants and energy-services corporations, the recurring questions are usually owner compensation and equipment timing.

For the mechanics of an online engagement start to finish, see the virtual CPA guide. Alberta-wide considerations, including the separate provincial return — are covered on the [Alberta business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) page.

## Remote accounting

The firm operates virtually and serves Calgary remotely. **There is no Calgary office and no staff based there.** Everything runs by video call, phone and secure document exchange, so nothing about the engagement depends on being nearby. The person who answers your question in March is the one who prepared the return in June, which is the part a larger office structure tends to lose.

## How a remote engagement works in Alberta

Alberta is the most straightforward province in the country for this, and a remote engagement removes the last reason to choose an accountant by driving distance.

- **Authorization, not paperwork.** You authorize us on CRA’s Represent a Client through your CRA My Business Account, a few clicks on your side, no forms in the mail. That is what lets us see your filings, balances and notices directly rather than asking you to forward them.

- **Documents move by secure upload link.** Bank statements, payroll records and year-end files are sent by secure upload link, never as email attachments. You can send from a phone.

- **Signatures are electronic.** Your T183 and engagement letter are signed in a browser. Nothing is printed, scanned or couriered.

- **Meetings are video or phone.** Year-end review, planning conversations and first enquiries all run this way, on your schedule rather than during a drive.

- **Filing is electronic to the same place it always was.** Returns are transmitted to CRA electronically; where a provincial return is administered separately, it is filed to that provincial authority the same way.

### What is specific to Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so there is no PST or RST registration and no provincial sales-tax return — GST alone. What Alberta does have is a separately administered provincial corporate tax: Alberta collects its own corporate income tax rather than delegating to CRA, which means an Alberta corporation files a provincial return (AT1) in addition to the federal T2. That is the single most common surprise for owners who incorporated elsewhere and moved.

If you are comparing firms first, [what to ask an accountant in Calgary before you sign](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/choosing-an-accountant-calgary) is written for exactly that.

Current Alberta rates and thresholds live on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts). Each figure there carries its source and the date it was checked, kept in one place rather than repeated across the site where it would go stale.

### Alberta questions we get

**Do I file a separate Alberta corporate return?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so an AT1 is filed with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration alongside the federal T2. Both are handled as one engagement here.

**Is there any Alberta sales tax to register for?**

No provincial sales tax exists in Alberta, so GST is the only sales-tax registration in play. If you sell into provinces that do have one, place-of-supply rules can still pull you into their systems.

**Do you work with businesses outside Calgary itself?**

Yes. EverStone works remotely, so businesses in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere are served exactly as Calgary ones are: video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.
