Cranbrook, BC · CPA for East Kootenay owner-run businesses

# A fixed-fee CPA for Cranbrook and the *East Kootenay*

Serving Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Invermere and the rest of the Regional District of East Kootenay online, EverStone CPA does the corporate tax, bookkeeping, payroll and personal returns for owner-run businesses in the southeast corner of the province. You deal with one Chartered Professional Accountant, mostly by email, and the price is agreed in writing up front.

**Who we help here:** Trucking and logistics firms on the Highway 3 corridor, construction contractors, companies that supply and service the Elk Valley coal mines, restaurants and hospitality businesses that live on regional and tourist traffic, and the cattle ranches and hay farms of the valley bottoms.

**Quick answer:** A Cranbrook business works under the same provincial rulebook as every other BC business: two sales taxes, WorkSafeBC premiums, the employer health tax for larger payrolls, and a yearly annual report to BC Registries. What sets an East Kootenay file apart is the work behind it. Freight, mine supply, construction and ranching each strain the books in their own way, and EverStone builds the accounting around that, remotely and at a fee fixed in writing.

## What Cranbrook owners get from a BC CPA

A Cranbrook company is not an unfamiliar file here. EverStone is a BC firm, and its clients file BC PST returns, pay WorkSafeBC premiums and keep the BC annual report on the same calendar as the T2 every year. There is nothing to learn about the province before your file can start, and nothing about the East Kootenay that needs a local office to understand.

The work is remote, and that suits owners who spend their days on job sites, in a cab or out on the range. A question sent from a yard on the edge of town, a mine-site trailer in the Elk Valley or a ranch kitchen near Kimberley is answered by the same CPA who prepares the return. Records arrive by secure upload link, returns are signed online, and a video meeting is booked whenever a decision deserves a proper conversation.

## The regional hub of the southeast

Cranbrook is the largest urban centre in the East Kootenay and the main service hub for the region. It started as a railway and resource town, and the Canadian Pacific line still runs through it every day. The city sits on the Highway 3 corridor, the Crowsnest Highway, which the City’s own economic development office describes as a key transportation corridor both interprovincially and internationally. The Canadian Rockies International Airport serves the region.

That geography shapes the local economy. People from Kimberley, the Elk Valley and the Columbia Valley come to Cranbrook to shop, see a specialist at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital or train at the College of the Rockies. Around that service economy sit the resource industries the region was built on: metallurgical coal mining to the east, forestry and post and pole mills through the surrounding forests, and beef cattle and forage on the farmland along the Kootenay River. Tourism runs through all of it, from skiing at Kimberley Alpine Resort to summer hiking, fishing and golf.

For the accounts, that mix means many Cranbrook businesses carry heavy equipment on the balance sheet, pay crews who work away from home, buy fuel and parts in volume and wait on large customers to pay. Getting the [capital cost allowance (CCA)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) schedule, travel costs and input tax credits right matters far more here than in a city of offices.

## Two sales taxes on one Cranbrook sale

A Cranbrook sale can carry two taxes that never meet. The 5% GST is a federal tax filed with the CRA, usually on a GST34 return or online through My Business Account. The 7% PST belongs to the province, with its own registration number and its own return to the Ministry of Finance. On purchases they part ways again: GST you pay is normally recovered through [input tax credits](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/input-tax-credits-itc-canada-guide), while PST you pay is simply part of what the item cost you.

Each local trade meets the two taxes differently. A contractor pays PST on materials it installs into a building, as the consumer, rather than charging it to the owner. A restaurant charges GST on meals while PST generally does not apply to the food. A mine-supply shop may collect PST on parts it sells and pay it on the equipment it uses. A ranch selling cattle raised for food charges no GST at all, because the sale is zero-rated, yet can still recover the GST on its inputs. Whether you need a PST number in the first place is set out in our [guide to BC PST registration](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-pst-small-business-guide).

## Five Cranbrook industries, five dedicated pages

East Kootenay work clusters into five trades. Each has its own Cranbrook page on the filings and records it lives with.

- [Trucking and logistics](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trucking-accountant-cranbrook): truck and trailer CCA, fuel records, long-haul meal claims, cross-border loads and the owner-operator question.

- [Construction contractors](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant-cranbrook): T5018 slips, PST on installed materials, WorkSafeBC clearance letters and holdbacks.

- [Mining services](https://www.everstonecpa.com/mining-services-accountant-cranbrook): crews on rotation to the Elk Valley, equipment financing, long receivable cycles and travel costs.

- [Restaurants and hospitality](https://www.everstonecpa.com/restaurant-accountant-cranbrook): tips, liquor PST, point-of-sale reconciliation and a summer and ski-season rhythm.

- [Farms and ranches](https://www.everstonecpa.com/farm-accountant-cranbrook): the cash method, cattle and hay sales, Crown range costs and passing the operation on.

## What a Cranbrook corporation files each year

Federal and BC corporate tax travel together on a single T2, so there is no separate provincial income tax return. Using the rates on our [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts), a Cranbrook company pays a combined 11% on income that qualifies for the small business deduction and 27% above it. That 11% band covers $500,000 of active business income a year, and associated companies split one limit between them. The return is due six months after year-end, but the tax is due earlier: two months, or three for a qualifying CCPC. Once the tax bill is large enough, the CRA expects instalments through the following year as well.

Outside the tax system, the company owes BC Registries an annual report each year, within two months of its incorporation anniversary, and nobody sends a reminder. Then there is how you pay yourself: a salary reported on a T4, dividends on a T5, or some of each. Money drawn from the company that is neither becomes a [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation). If it is still outstanding a year after the year-end, it generally lands on your personal return as income.

Sole proprietors have a simpler path. Business income goes on form T2125 inside the T1, CPP is paid on both halves of net self-employment earnings, and the return is due June 15 with any balance still owed by April 30. Many Cranbrook trades start that way and incorporate once profit regularly runs ahead of what the household spends.

## Services for Cranbrook businesses

The four core services each have a Cranbrook page of their own.

- [Bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-cranbrook): monthly reconciliation with GST and PST filing included, from $300 a month.

- [Payroll](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-cranbrook): source deductions, CPP and EI premiums, WorkSafeBC, vacation pay and year-end slips.

- [Corporate tax (T2)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-cranbrook): year-end statements, the T2 itself, and owner-pay planning done while it can still change the result.

- [Personal tax (T1)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-cranbrook): returns for owners, employees, rotation workers, retirees and landlords, with personal tax from $100 a return.

For an incorporated Cranbrook trade or carrier, books, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually come to $450–$650 a month. The full list sits on the [pricing page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing). A T2 without the other services is priced once we have had a free consultation and seen the books.

Common questions

## Cranbrook business owner questions

**How much does an accountant cost in Cranbrook?**

It depends on the work, but the price never moves once agreed. Published starting points: $100 for a T1, $300 a month for bookkeeping with both sales-tax returns filed, and $450–$650 a month for a typical incorporated trade. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Will I ever need to drive to a meeting?**

No. EverStone works online and has no Cranbrook location. Your records come in through a secure upload link, questions go by email, video covers anything that needs a conversation, and you sign returns online.

**When does a Cranbrook business have to register for GST and PST?**

They are separate tests. For GST, the trigger is $30,000 of taxable sales across four calendar quarters in a row. For PST, it is what you sell: taxable goods, leases or services in BC mean a provincial registration, whatever your revenue.

**My business is in Kimberley, Fernie or Invermere. Is anything different?**

The tax side is identical anywhere in the Regional District of East Kootenay. Only local items, such as the business licence, change with the municipality, and those are not part of the returns.

**I haul or work into Alberta. Does that change my returns?**

It can. A BC corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta allocates income between the provinces on the T2, and carriers may have fuel-tax reporting by jurisdiction. Work that simply crosses the border with a truck usually stays a BC file. We check the facts in the first conversation. For Alberta-side businesses, see [accountant in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary).

**When should a Cranbrook company set its year-end?**

After the busiest stretch, not in the middle of it. A contractor or a hospitality business that peaks in summer usually does better with a year-end in the quieter months, when inventory is low and there is time to close the books properly.

**Can you take over from my current accountant part-way through a year?**

Yes, at any point in the year. We ask your previous firm for last year’s file, check the balances we inherit, and carry on with whatever filings come next. The steps are listed on [switching accountants](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants).
