# Accountant for incorporated professionals in *Maple Ridge*

A large share of Maple Ridge’s incorporated owners are one-person corporations — consultants, IT and engineering contractors, project managers — billing a client in Vancouver, Burnaby or Surrey from a home office off Lougheed.

EverStone is an [accountant for incorporated professionals](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-incorporated-professionals) and a [Maple Ridge small-business CPA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-maple-ridge), handling that structure at fixed fees, online.

**Quick answer:** If you are incorporated in Maple Ridge and bill most of your time to one client, the biggest number on your return is not a deduction. It is whether CRA could treat your corporation as a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#psb). That single determination outweighs every home-office or vehicle claim combined. EverStone reviews that exposure, plans your salary-and-dividend mix, and files the T2 at a fixed fee, entirely online. Published fees start at $325 a month for bookkeeping and $125 for a personal return.

## The commuter consultant’s tax picture

Many Maple Ridge owners are incorporated professionals working for clients elsewhere, often because a client wanted a contractor, not an employee. That is why the tax file needs care: a one-person corporation billing one client for the owner’s own time is exactly what the **[personal services business](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html)** rules target.

Most owners here have never had the risk assessed. They incorporated because a client asked, took dividends on advice, and claimed a [home office](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/deductions-credits-expenses/line-22900-other-employment-expenses/work-space-home-expenses.html) because it seemed reasonable. Each choice can be right, but they interact, and the first dominates.

## Personal services business: the risk that costs the most

If CRA finds your corporation is a personal services business, the consequences compound. It loses the **[small business deduction](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary)**, so the favourable rate you incorporated for disappears. Deductions are restricted largely to salary paid to the incorporated employee and a narrow set of other costs. And an additional federal tax applies on top of the general rate.

The result is worse than being an employee, applied retroactively to every year under review. For a Maple Ridge consultant on one long client contract, this is a real risk; see our guide to [personal services business risk](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada).

## What actually moves you out of the risk zone

The test: without the corporation, would you reasonably be regarded as the client’s employee? CRA weighs substance over labels: who controls the work and hours, who supplies tools and workspace, whether you can profit or lose, whether you can send a substitute, and whether you work like staff.

Two further conditions must both hold. Ownership: you, or someone related to you, must be a **specified shareholder**, broadly holding at least 10% of the shares, and be the person doing the work. Size: the corporation employs **no more than five full-time employees** throughout the year. A one-person Maple Ridge consulting company with one long contract meets both, so the behavioural test above decides it.

What helps: serving more than one client, using your own equipment, working to deliverables rather than set hours, carrying your own insurance, and a contract that reflects the real arrangement. A contract saying “independent contractor” while every other fact disagrees does not. We review it honestly, including when the exposure is worth restructuring.

## Home office when the client is somewhere else

For a Maple Ridge professional with a client in Vancouver or Burnaby, the home office is usually the real base of operations, which makes the claim defensible. The corporation can generally pay workspace costs, apportioned by the share of the home used to earn income.

Two details matter. First, travel between a home office that is your principal place of business and a client site is treated differently from commuting; confirm this, because it changes the vehicle claim substantially. Second, the space must be used for the business consistently, and you need to be able to show it. Our [home office deduction guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/home-office-deduction-corporation-canada) covers the mechanics.

## Salary, dividends, or both

The salary-dividend mix is an annual decision that moves with your income, RRSP room and living needs. Salary creates RRSP room and [CPP contributions](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/payroll-deductions-contributions/canada-pension-plan-cpp.html) and is deductible to the corporation; dividends avoid CPP and are simpler to administer.

Owners go wrong treating it as ideology (“I take dividends”) rather than arithmetic. If PSB risk is live, salary is one of the few amounts that stays deductible. We run the numbers yearly; our [salary-versus-dividends calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator) is a starting point.

## What CRA expects you to keep

A one-person corporation still needs records: client contracts, invoices, a separate business bank account, mileage logs for vehicle claims, and support for the home-office split. Minutes and dividend resolutions matter too: an undeclared dividend is a [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary), taxed as personal income if left outstanding past the deadline.

None of this is onerous once it is set up properly. It is expensive to reconstruct after a review letter arrives.

## What EverStone handles for you

## What an incorporated professional has to get right

What an incorporated professional has to get right
Where professional rules and tax rules meet — for a business operating in Maple Ridge, British Columbia

| Item | Why it matters |

| Who may own shares | Professional corporations are restricted by the governing regulator, not just by tax rules |

| Salary or dividends | The mix changes both the corporate return and your personal one |

| Retained earnings | Income left in the corporation is taxed differently from income taken out |

| Regulator filings | The corporate permit is separate from anything the CRA requires |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST plus 7% BC PST: two registrations, two returns |

## Remote accounting for incorporated professionals

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. **There is no Maple Ridge office and no local staff.** Everything runs by video, phone, secure email and e-signature. Corporate and personal returns are prepared together, so the pay decision is made once with both sides visible.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an incorporated professional billing through their own company. It does not fit someone still deciding whether to incorporate at all — [that question comes first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/should-i-incorporate), and the answer is not always yes.

## What happens when you get in touch

A professional corporation has a short list of decisions that matter, and they are made early.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.

Common questions

## Maple Ridge incorporated professionals FAQ

**I have one client and I am incorporated in Maple Ridge. Am I a personal services business?**

You may be at risk. The test is whether, without the corporation, you would reasonably be regarded as an employee of that client — judged on control, tools and workspace, chance of profit or loss, ability to send a substitute, and integration into their organization. One client alone is not conclusive, but it is the strongest indicator, and being wrong is costly. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What actually happens if CRA decides my corporation is a PSB?**

The corporation loses the small business deduction, so the low rate you incorporated for is gone. Deductions are restricted largely to salary paid to you, and an additional federal tax applies. Across several reviewed years, the result is usually worse than being an employee throughout.

**Can I claim a home office if I spend most days at my client’s Vancouver site?**

Often yes, if the space is used to earn income; the claim is apportioned to the share of the home used. The bigger issue for a commuting Maple Ridge professional: if the home office is your principal place of business, travel to a client site is treated differently, which can be worth more than the office claim itself.

**Do you work with incorporated professionals across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows?**

Yes — incorporated consultants, contractors and professionals throughout Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Albion, Websters Corners, Silver Valley and Whonnock, and across the wider Fraser Valley. Everything runs online, which is usually the point for someone already commuting west several days a week.

**How should I pay myself from my Maple Ridge professional corporation?**

Most owners use a deliberate mix. Salary creates RRSP room, CPP contributions and provable income for a mortgage; dividends avoid payroll administration and CPP. The split depends on your needs, what stays in the corporation and your retirement plan; revisit it before each year-end.

**What can I leave in my corporation, and what happens if I do?**

Retained earnings can be invested inside the corporation, but investment income there is taxed differently from active business income, and passive income above a threshold grinds down the small business deduction. That is why a corporation used for savings needs a plan.

**Do I need a separate GST registration for my professional corporation?**

Yes, if the corporation bills. Registration follows the entity making the supply, so a number held as a sole proprietor does not carry over. Invoicing under the old number creates a mismatch that surfaces at review; register the corporation before the first invoice.

**What does an accountant cost for a Maple Ridge professional practice business?**

Maple Ridge fees are the same as elsewhere: monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month, a personal return from $125, a corporate return quoted after review. A 45-minute Advice Call is $225 + GST. Every fee is fixed in writing first. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).
