Grande Prairie, AB · CPA for Peace Region owner-managed businesses

# *Grande Prairie* accountant for energy, trades, forestry and farm businesses

EverStone CPA works with incorporated and self-employed businesses in Grande Prairie entirely online — corporate tax, bookkeeping, GST, payroll and plain-English advice from one Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fixed fee with no hourly surprises. Businesses in Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge and across the County of Grande Prairie are served the same way.

**Who we help here:** oilfield and energy services companies working the Montney and Duvernay, trades and construction contractors, haulers and logistics firms, forestry contractors, farm corporations, and the professional and retail businesses that serve the region. Most have equipment, seasonal swings and income that does not arrive evenly.

**Quick answer:** Grande Prairie owners deal with one sales tax — 5% GST, no provincial sales tax — but two corporate income tax returns, because Alberta runs its own corporate tax: the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1. EverStone handles corporate tax, bookkeeping, GST, payroll and salary-versus-dividend planning for Grande Prairie businesses entirely online, at a fixed fee quoted before work starts. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

Why EverStone

## A CPA who plans for the cycle, not just the filing

Business in the Peace Region does not run on a smooth monthly curve. Activity follows natural gas prices and operator programs, the forestry calendar, the farm year and the seasons that decide when sites and roads can be used. An accountant who only appears at tax time sees the result after the decisions are made. We work with you through the year, so owner pay, equipment purchases, instalments and cash reserves are planned against the year you are actually having.

Every Grande Prairie client works with one Chartered Professional Accountant who knows the file continuously, not a different preparer each spring. Everything runs by email, video and secure upload, with a fee that is fixed and agreed before any work starts.

Alberta tax, from a Grande Prairie desk

## What operating in Alberta changes for your file

Fewer sales-tax returns, a low corporate rate, and one provincial filing that owners from other provinces often miss.

### No provincial sales tax

Alberta charges **no PST at all**, so Alberta sales carry 5% GST only, and a registrant recovers GST on purchases through [input tax credits](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary). Work delivered into British Columbia is the exception worth watching, because BC has its own PST.

### A low corporate rate

Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined (9% federal, 2% Alberta) on a $500,000 limit, and general income at 23% (15% federal, 8% Alberta), the lowest provincial general rate in Canada. See [Alberta tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

### Two corporate returns

Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment here files the federal T2 *and* the Alberta AT1, with two instalment streams. Companies that moved to the Peace Region from BC are the ones most likely to miss it.

The Peace Region economy

## Accounting built for an equipment-heavy, seasonal region

Grande Prairie is the largest city north of Edmonton and the commercial and service hub for a wide trade area across northwestern Alberta and into northern British Columbia. It sits on the CANAMEX trade route, with highway, rail and air links, and in the heart of the Montney and Duvernay resource plays. Alongside energy, the City and the County of Grande Prairie point to forestry and manufacturing — the region is a leading Alberta producer of pulp, paper and panelboard — agriculture and food production, transportation and logistics, retail and services, and healthcare.

The businesses we work with across that economy share a pattern. They own trucks, trailers and equipment that need careful [capital cost allowance planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada). Their revenue moves with seasons and commodity prices. And their owners need tax and pay decisions that flex between a strong year and a lean one. We build bookkeeping, GST and corporate tax around that, starting with job costing that shows true margin.

The issue we see most often

## Planning owner pay and instalments around a cycle

Most tax planning assumes a business earns about the same amount every year. Grande Prairie businesses rarely do. A strong year on the back of a busy drilling or construction season can be followed by a materially slower one, and decisions made as if income were steady can leave an owner with a large personal tax bill, and instalments still set at last year’s level, in a year the corporation did not generate much cash.

The planning that helps looks at several years together. In a strong year, that may mean holding more profit inside the corporation at the low small business rate rather than drawing it all as salary or dividends, so there is a reserve when work slows. In a lean year, it may mean paying dividends from [retained earnings](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary) built up earlier rather than a salary the company cannot comfortably support. It also means setting corporate instalments — both the federal and the Alberta stream — on the year you expect rather than the one behind you.

Equipment decisions belong in the same conversation. Buying a unit before year end can bring a [capital cost allowance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/sole-proprietorships-partnerships/report-business-income-expenses/claiming-capital-cost-allowance.html) claim into the year; trading one in can bring recapture with it. We look at both before the year closes, together with the owner’s pay, using our [salary and dividend tool](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator) as a starting point.

How it works

## Getting started, on your schedule

Three steps, handled securely online around your work.

1

### Send an enquiry

Tell us about your Grande Prairie business by email or the enquiry form, and we come back with a fixed, no-obligation quote.

2

### Send your records securely

Authorize us through your CRA My Business Account and share your books and prior filings by secure upload — we take over GST, bookkeeping, the T2 and the AT1 from there.

3

### Stay compliant all year

We file on time with the CRA and Alberta, and re-plan owner pay, equipment timing and instalments as the season and the cycle turn.

## Grande Prairie industries we work with most

**Energy services.** Well-site, completions, hauling, rentals, fabrication, environmental and safety companies carry the heaviest equipment positions of any group we act for, and their income follows operator programs. Two things recur: equipment class, financing and disposal all move the tax result, and contract concentration means a consultant billing one operator for most of a year can sit in [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada) territory. See [energy services accounting in Grande Prairie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/energy-services-accountant-grande-prairie).

**Trades and construction.** Electrical, mechanical, civil and building contractors split their year between local construction and industrial work. They need job costing, T5018 slips for subtrades, WCB-Alberta clearance checks and attention to Alberta’s prompt payment timelines. See [trades accounting in Grande Prairie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trades-accountant-grande-prairie).

**Forestry, farming and transport.** Forestry contractors and haulers carry heavy equipment and seasonal contract income. Farm corporations in the County carry land, machinery and grain inventory, often alongside related family companies that share a single small business limit. Trucking and logistics firms along the highway corridors deal with fuel, per-diem and equipment questions; our [Edmonton trucking page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trucking-accountant-edmonton) covers the Alberta trucking picture.

**Professional, retail and service businesses.** As the region’s commercial hub, Grande Prairie also has incorporated health practitioners, consultants, retailers and service businesses. Their files are less about equipment and more about owner pay, GST and clean monthly books.

## What a Grande Prairie client’s year looks like

Books stay current monthly. GST is filed on the frequency the CRA assigned. Payroll runs through the season, with ROEs when crews are released. Before the [fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#fiscal-year-end), we review owner pay, planned equipment purchases and disposals, and next year’s instalments. After it, the T2 and the AT1 are prepared together from one set of figures, with the [balance owing](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments.html) due earlier than the return. With no provincial sales tax, the compliance calendar is genuinely lighter than a BC or Ontario equivalent — until work crosses into BC, where BC PST and BC payroll rules can come into play.

We work with owner-managed businesses across Alberta. See [accounting in Alberta](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) for the provincial picture, or the [Edmonton accountant page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton) if you also operate in the capital region.

## Which return applies to you

Which return applies to you
The structure you trade under decides the return — for a business operating in Grande Prairie, Alberta

| If you are | You file |

| A sole proprietor | A T1 personal return with form T2125 for the business |

| An incorporated business | A federal T2 corporate return and an Alberta AT1, with financial statement schedules |

| A partnership | A T5013 partnership return where required, plus each partner’s own return |

| Employed with a side business | A T1 that reports both the T4 income and the T2125 business |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST only. Alberta levies no provincial sales tax |

Common questions

## Questions from Grande Prairie business owners

**How much does an accountant cost in Grande Prairie?**

We charge fixed fees, quoted up front after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. Personal returns start at $100 and monthly bookkeeping at $300 a month; corporate returns and year-end statements are quoted individually. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts, and a Grande Prairie address does not change them.

**Can an accountant outside Grande Prairie file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. Federal and Alberta returns can be prepared by a CPA anywhere and are filed electronically. The Alberta difference worth knowing: the province administers its own corporate income tax, so there is an AT1 alongside the federal T2 — we prepare both. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Do you have a Grande Prairie office?**

No. EverStone is fully virtual and has no office or staff in Grande Prairie. Everything runs by email, video call, secure upload and e-signature, so nothing about the engagement depends on being nearby.

**How do we exchange documents securely?**

Through a secure upload link, which matters when records are spread across a corporate card, fuel cards, field tickets and a job management app. You upload as you go or export monthly; we reconcile and send returns back for e-signature.

**Alberta has no PST — is sales tax a non-issue for my business?**

It is simpler than in a two-tax province, but not a non-issue. You still need to register for and file GST correctly, and work delivered into British Columbia can bring BC PST with it. We track where you actually work and sell, not just where you are based.

**My revenue swings a lot year to year — how does that affect my tax planning?**

Significantly. Pay decisions that assume steady income can leave you overpaying personal tax in a lean year or underusing the small business rate in a strong one, and instalments based on last year can be badly off. We plan across several years, not just the current T2.

**Do you work with businesses outside Grande Prairie itself?**

Yes. Businesses in Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge and across the County of Grande Prairie are served exactly as city ones are: email, video, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.

**Fixed fees**Clear, fixed pricing. You approve the fee before any work begins. No surprise bills.

**One day**We reply to every enquiry within one business day, usually the same day.

**CPA-led**Every file is handled personally by a CPA, never passed to junior staff.

**No obligation**Sending an enquiry is free, with zero pressure and no obligation.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Grande Prairie business is onboarded by email and video, on the same fixed fee as anywhere else we work.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.

## Remote accounting, and what is specific to Alberta

The firm operates virtually and serves Grande Prairie remotely. **There is no Grande Prairie office and no staff based there.** You authorize us through the CRA’s Represent a Client service in your My Business Account, documents move by secure upload link, your T183 and engagement letter are e-signed, and returns go to the CRA and to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration electronically. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so there is no PST registration or return. What Alberta does have is a separately administered corporate income tax, which means the AT1 in addition to the federal T2 — the most common surprise for owners who incorporated elsewhere. Current Alberta rates and thresholds live on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).
