# *Lethbridge*’s CPA for Agri-Food, Manufacturing & Owner-Run Businesses

EverStone CPA works with incorporated businesses in Lethbridge entirely online — corporate tax, bookkeeping, GST and clear advice from one Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fixed fee with no hourly surprises. Businesses in Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Raymond, Taber and the rest of Lethbridge County are served the same way.

**Who we help here:** food processors and the suppliers around them, manufacturers and fabricators, trucking and warehousing operators, contractors, farm corporations, and the clinics, practices and shops that serve a regional city. Their years follow the growing season and the order book, not the calendar, and the accounting should be built around that.

**Quick answer:** A Lethbridge corporation deals with one sales tax — 5% GST, no [provincial sales tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#pst) — but files two corporate returns: the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1. EverStone handles both returns, the bookkeeping, GST and salary-versus-dividend planning for incorporated Lethbridge businesses entirely online, at a fixed fee quoted before work starts. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

Why EverStone

## A CPA who plans around the season, not just the filing date

Lethbridge has a broader, steadier economy than most Alberta cities its size. Agri-food processing, manufacturing, logistics, health care and two large post-secondary institutions all sit side by side, and the city is known for avoiding the sharpest boom-and-bust swings felt elsewhere in the province. That steadiness at city level hides a lot of movement inside individual businesses: a processor whose intake peaks at harvest, a trailer or steel fabricator working through a backlog, a contractor whose year is decided between April and October.

We work with those owners year-round rather than once each spring. Every Lethbridge client has one CPA who knows the file continuously, the fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, and everything runs by email, video and secure upload. There is no Lethbridge office, and nothing about the engagement needs one.

Alberta tax, as it lands in Lethbridge

## Fewer taxes to collect, one more return to file

Alberta is lighter on sales tax and payroll tax than any neighbour, and stricter about the corporate return.

### No provincial sales tax

Alberta charges **no PST at all**, so a Lethbridge business selling inside the province deals only with the 5% federal GST. For a processor or fabricator buying inputs by the truckload, that means no non-recoverable provincial tax buried in the cost of every load.

### Low corporate rates

Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined (9% federal, 2% Alberta) on the first $500,000. General income is taxed at 23% combined, using Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

### A second corporate return

Alberta collects its own corporate income tax, so a Lethbridge corporation files the **AT1** with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration as well as the federal T2. The two run on separate accounts and separate instalments, and the AT1 is the filing most often missed.

Lethbridge’s owner-run economy

## Accounting for a city that feeds, builds and ships

Lethbridge sits at the centre of a large irrigated farming region, and a large share of its private economy is tied to what that land produces. Farming, ranching and food processing are core sectors, and the feedlots, dairies, greenhouses and processing plants of Lethbridge County and the neighbouring towns depend on suppliers, mechanics, truckers and contractors in the city. Manufacturing is the second pillar, from trailers to prefabricated structures, and the city’s highway and rail links, together with its position near the province’s only 24-hour commercial border crossing, support a steady logistics and warehousing trade.

For accounting, those businesses share a few patterns. Inventory is real and has to be counted. Equipment is a large part of the balance sheet, so [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) classes and the timing of purchases matter. Revenue tends to arrive in a season, while fixed costs arrive every month. We build the bookkeeping, GST filing and the T2 and AT1 around that reality.

The issue we see most often

## A strong harvest year followed by a thin cash spring

The most common problem in businesses like these is not a tax error. It is timing. A business that sells into the agricultural cycle often books most of its profit in late summer and fall, pays tax on it the following year, and then reaches March and April with the lowest bank balance of the year, just as seeding-season purchases, the corporate balance owing and the owner’s personal tax all fall due together.

Three things fix most of it. First, [instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) set against the actual pattern of the year, on both the federal and the Alberta stream, so a strong year does not produce one large surprise. Second, a fiscal year-end chosen to fall in a quiet month rather than in the middle of the busiest quarter, which gives a cleaner inventory count and time to decide on bonuses and dividends before the year closes. Third, owner pay drawn from [retained earnings](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary) on a schedule, rather than pulled out in a lump when the cheque from the fall arrives.

We treat your Lethbridge business’s tax planning as a multi-year exercise from the start: where retained earnings sit, when equipment is bought, how the salary-and-dividend mix changes between a strong year and a lean one, and what the corporation needs in the bank on the first of April. The same formula is not applied regardless of what kind of year it has been.

How it works

## Getting started, on your schedule

Three steps, handled securely online around your schedule.

1

### Send an enquiry

Email us about your Lethbridge business, or book a short video call, and we come back with a fixed, no-obligation quote in writing.

2

### Send your records securely

Authorize us through CRA My Business Account and share your books and prior filings by secure upload. We take over GST, bookkeeping, the T2 and the AT1 from there.

3

### Stay compliant all year

We file on time with the CRA and Alberta, keep instalments in line with the season, and re-plan owner pay before each year-end closes.

## Lethbridge industries we work with most

The Lethbridge businesses we work with fall into a handful of groups. Food and feed processors, and the businesses that supply them, carry inventory, packaging, freight and often a seasonal intake that makes month-end figures swing. Manufacturers and fabricators carry work in progress, raw material and shop equipment, and their margin lives or dies on job costing. Trucking and warehousing businesses carry tractors, trailers and fuel cards, and they cross the border often enough that the GST treatment of freight matters. Contractors carry subtrade payments, holdbacks and [T5018 slips](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trades-accountant-lethbridge). And farm corporations carry land, quota, cattle and grain, with rules no other industry gets; see [farm accounting in Lethbridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/farm-accountant-lethbridge).

Alongside them sits a large group of professionals. Health care and social assistance is the city’s largest employing sector, and the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic are two of its biggest employers, which means a steady population of clinic owners, consultants and researchers with incorporated practices or side businesses. Their questions are usually about owner pay, [personal services business risk](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada) where there is one main client, and how a practice corporation should hold its surplus.

Geography still shapes what a file looks like, even though the work is remote. Coaldale, Picture Butte and the rest of Lethbridge County sit in livestock, feed and irrigated-crop country, so a business there is often a supplier, hauler or service provider to farms. Coalhurst, on the city’s doorstep, suits owner-operated trades and transport firms working across the region. Taber and Raymond are farming towns where family businesses and family farms often share owners, which puts succession on the table early. None of that changes how we file — it changes what the return has to account for.

## How working with a Lethbridge business actually runs

Everything is remote, and deliberately so: you get a CPA who replies, not one who is close by. The first contact is usually an email, and a video call follows if it helps. Documents move through a secure upload rather than a courier or a drop-in, and signatures are electronic. Through the year you can email a question and no bill follows it, because the fee is fixed and agreed before any work begins. The questions worth asking usually arrive before a decision, not after: before the new trailer is bought, before the year-end closes, before a family member is put on payroll.

The same CPA handles your file from start to finish, so the person who prepares your return is the person who answers your email. For Lethbridge owners that removes the two things that make an accountant hard to use: the drive, and the hesitation to ask.

## What a Lethbridge client’s year looks like

For most clients here, the year runs on the season. Books stay current monthly. GST is filed on the schedule the CRA assigned, and businesses with zero-rated sales often file more often than they have to, because each return is a refund. T4 slips go out by the end of February. Planning happens in the month or two before the fiscal year-end, the balance owing is paid by the earlier due date, and the T2 and AT1 follow within six months. With no provincial sales tax and no provincial payroll tax, the compliance calendar is genuinely lighter than the same business would face in BC or Ontario, which leaves more room for the decisions that actually move the result.

We work with owner-managed businesses across the province. See [accounting in Alberta](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) for the provincial picture, or [our Calgary page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary) if your business also operates there.

Common questions

## Questions from Lethbridge business owners

**How much does an accountant cost in Lethbridge?**

We charge fixed fees, quoted up front after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. A personal return starts at $100 and monthly bookkeeping at $300 a month; corporate returns and year-end statements are quoted individually. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts, and a Lethbridge address does not change them.

**Can an accountant outside Lethbridge file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. The T2 is a federal return and the AT1 is filed electronically to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration; neither depends on where the preparer sits. What matters is that both are prepared from the same closed year-end, which is how we do it.

**How do we exchange documents securely?**

Through a secure upload link, which matters when records are spread across a bank feed, a fuel card, grain or cattle settlements and an inventory spreadsheet. You upload as you go or export monthly; we reconcile and send returns back for e-signature. Nothing sensitive travels as an unencrypted attachment.

**Do you understand Alberta tax rules?**

Yes, including the separate AT1 corporate return, its own instalment stream, WCB-Alberta, Alberta’s general holiday pay formula, and the fact that Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so you deal with GST alone. Provincial specifics are part of the standard engagement, not an add-on.

**Is there an EverStone office in Lethbridge?**

No. EverStone is fully virtual and has no office in Lethbridge or anywhere you would need to visit. T2, AT1, GST and CRA correspondence are handled identically regardless of location, and we work with Lethbridge clients by email, video and e-signature. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Most of my sales are zero-rated food or farm products. Do I still register for GST?**

Usually it pays to. Zero-rated sales are taxable at 0%, so a registered business charges no GST on them but can still claim input tax credits on fuel, repairs, packaging and equipment. For many businesses tied to agriculture, every GST return is a refund, and those refunds only arrive if you are registered and filing.

**My revenue is seasonal — how should that change my tax planning?**

Significantly. Instalments, the fiscal year-end and the timing of owner pay should all follow the shape of the year. We plan across the season and across years, so a strong fall does not turn into a cash squeeze the following spring.

**I ship into the United States or other provinces. Does that change anything?**

It can. Exported goods are generally zero-rated for GST, which needs the right export records, and sales into a province with HST or its own PST follow the customer’s province, not yours. We track where you actually sell, not just where you are, so the rate on each invoice is right.

How it works remotely

## Working with a virtual tax accountant in Lethbridge

Alberta simplifies one thing and complicates another. There is no provincial sales tax, so a Lethbridge corporation deals with GST alone rather than a GST-plus-PST split — genuinely less administration. But Alberta administers its own corporate income tax separately from the CRA, which means the AT1 alongside the federal T2, and its own [instalment](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html) schedule to track.

Working with us online means that coordination is handled rather than delegated back to you: secure upload links for records, video meetings around seeding, harvest or a production run, e-signature approvals, and a single CPA who knows which filing is due when. For Lethbridge owners, the recurring questions are usually inventory, equipment timing and owner pay.

Alberta-wide considerations, including the separate provincial return, are covered on the [Alberta business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) page, and current rates live on the [Alberta tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) page.

## Remote accounting

The firm works online and serves Lethbridge remotely. **There is no Lethbridge office and no staff based there.** Everything runs by email, video call and secure document exchange, so nothing about the engagement depends on being nearby. The person who answers your question in March is the one who prepared the return in June, which is the part a larger office structure tends to lose.

## How a remote engagement works in Alberta

Alberta is one of the most straightforward provinces for this, and a remote engagement removes the last reason to choose an accountant by driving distance.

- **Authorization, not paperwork.** You authorize us through your CRA My Business Account, a few clicks on your side, no forms in the mail. That is what lets us see your filings, balances and notices directly rather than asking you to forward them.

- **Documents move by secure upload link.** Bank statements, settlement statements, payroll records and year-end files are sent by secure upload link, never as email attachments. You can send from a phone in the yard.

- **Signatures are electronic.** Your T183 and engagement letter are signed in a browser. Nothing is printed, scanned or couriered.

- **Meetings are video or phone, when they help.** Year-end reviews and planning conversations are booked around your season rather than during it.

- **Filing is electronic.** The T2 goes to the CRA and the AT1 to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration, both transmitted electronically.

### What is specific to Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so there is no PST registration and no provincial sales-tax return — GST alone. Nor is there an employer health tax on payroll. What Alberta does have is a separately administered corporate tax: a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the AT1 in addition to the federal T2. That is the single most common surprise for owners who incorporated elsewhere and moved, or who set up an Alberta company while living out of province.

Current Alberta rates and thresholds live on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts). Each figure there carries its source and the date it was checked, kept in one place rather than repeated across the site where it would go stale.

### Alberta questions we get

**Do I file a separate Alberta corporate return?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so an AT1 is filed with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration alongside the federal T2. Both are handled as one engagement here.

**Is there any Alberta sales tax to register for?**

No provincial sales tax exists in Alberta, so GST is the only sales-tax registration in play. If you sell into provinces that do have one, place-of-supply rules can still pull you into their systems.

**Do you work with businesses outside Lethbridge itself?**

Yes. EverStone works remotely, so businesses in Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Raymond, Taber and across Lethbridge County are served exactly as Lethbridge ones are: email, video, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.
