# *Red Deer* accountant for owner-managed businesses

EverStone CPA works with incorporated businesses and self-employed owners in Red Deer entirely online: corporate tax, bookkeeping, GST and straight advice from one Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fixed fee agreed before any work starts. Businesses in Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Innisfail, Penhold and the rest of Red Deer County are served the same way.

**Who we help here:** oilfield service and fabrication shops, trades and construction companies, health practitioners, retailers and restaurants, and the consultants who work between Calgary and Edmonton. Most of them are run by the person who owns them, and they want an accountant who answers email rather than one who appears once a year.

**Quick answer:** A Red Deer business deals with 5% GST and no [provincial sales tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#pst), but an Alberta corporation files two corporate returns: the federal T2 and the provincial AT1. EverStone handles both, plus bookkeeping, GST and owner-pay planning, fully online at a fixed fee quoted before work starts. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping.

Why EverStone

## A CPA for a regional economy, not a single industry

Red Deer sits in central Alberta, midway between Calgary and Edmonton on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, and its businesses reflect that position. The City lists health care, retail, construction, oil and gas, accommodation and food services, manufacturing and education among its largest employers by labour force. An accountant for Red Deer owners has to be comfortable with a fabrication shop’s equipment schedule on Monday and a dental practice’s professional corporation on Tuesday.

Every Red Deer client works with one Chartered Professional Accountant who knows the file all year, not a different preparer each spring. The work runs by email, video and secure upload, and the fee is fixed and agreed in writing before anything starts. There is no office in Red Deer, and there does not need to be one.

Alberta tax, in plain terms

## What operating from Red Deer changes on the tax side

Fewer sales-tax returns than anywhere else in Canada, and one more corporate return than most owners expect.

### GST only

Alberta charges **no provincial sales tax**, so a Red Deer business selling within the province collects 5% GST and nothing else. One registration, one return, and no unrecoverable provincial tax buried in the cost of equipment or materials.

### Low corporate rates

Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) on a $500,000 limit. Income above that is taxed at 23% combined, which rests on the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

### A second corporate return

Alberta runs its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment here files an AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration as well as the T2 with the CRA. We prepare both from one closed year end.

Red Deer’s owner-run economy

## Accounting for a central Alberta mix of industries

The City of Red Deer describes manufacturing as one of the driving forces of the local economy, with shops supplying metal fabrication, petrochemicals and drilling equipment to the oil and gas industry and shipping well beyond Alberta. Alongside them sit oilfield production services, a large construction sector, and the retail, restaurant and hotel businesses that serve shoppers from across central Alberta. The wider central Alberta region also has a strong concentration of agriculture.

Those businesses do not share a tax profile. A fabrication shop is a [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) file with large GST input tax credits on equipment. A trades company is a T5018 and WCB-Alberta file. A restaurant is a payroll file with general holiday pay to get right. A physician or dentist working through a professional corporation is a remuneration-planning file. We set up the books and the year end around whichever of those you are.

The issue we see most often

## One return filed, the other one missed

The most common problem we find when a Red Deer corporation comes to us is not an aggressive deduction. It is a missing provincial return. An owner incorporates, files the federal T2 each year through whoever prepares it, and never sees an AT1 confirmation because nobody filed one. Nothing about completing the federal return prompts the provincial one, and the gap usually surfaces as correspondence from Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration long after the federal assessments arrived.

It happens most often to businesses that moved into Alberta, to corporations first set up in another province, and to owners who switched preparers part way through. It also turns up in the instalment record: an Alberta corporation that owes instalments pays one stream to the CRA and a separate one to the province, and interest runs on each independently. Fixing it means filing the missing years oldest first, reconciling both instalment accounts, and then closing every year end once so both returns come from the same figures.

If you are not sure whether your corporation has been filing both, that is a reasonable first question to send us. We can check through [My Business Account](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/digital-services-businesses/business-account.html) on the federal side and with your provincial account on the Alberta side, and tell you in writing what is outstanding before any fee is agreed.

How it works

## Getting started, on your schedule

Three steps, handled securely online around your working week.

1

### Send an enquiry

Tell us by email or the quote form what your Red Deer business does and what is due. We reply with a fixed, no-obligation quote in writing.

2

### Send your records securely

You authorize us with the CRA online and share books and prior filings by secure upload. We take over GST, bookkeeping and the corporate returns from there.

3

### Stay current all year

We file on time, keep both the CRA and Alberta accounts in order, and plan owner pay and instalments before the year end rather than after it.

## Red Deer industries we work with most

Manufacturing and oilfield services are where the heaviest files sit. A shop that builds or repairs drilling and production equipment carries real capital assets, inventory and work in progress, and sells to customers who may be in other provinces or other countries. The class an asset falls into, whether it is bought or leased, and what happens when it is traded in all move the tax result. See [energy services accounting in Red Deer](https://www.everstonecpa.com/energy-services-accountant-red-deer) for how we handle equipment, disposals and instalments for those companies.

Construction is the other large group. The City notes active residential, commercial and industrial development, and Red Deer Polytechnic trains apprentices in trades such as carpentry. For a trades company, the accounting that matters is job costing, subcontractor reporting on the [T5018](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t5018-subcontractor-reporting-construction), WCB-Alberta coverage and Alberta’s prompt payment timelines. [Trades accounting in Red Deer](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trades-accountant-red-deer) covers that ground.

The City lists health care first among Red Deer’s key industries by labour force and describes the city as a hub for health services, with the Red Deer Regional Hospital and Alberta Health Services as major employers. Around them sit physicians, dentists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, pharmacies and home-care businesses, many of them incorporated. Their questions are mostly about how to pay themselves, whether to keep profit in the corporation, and how a spouse can be involved without running into the tax on split income. Retail and hospitality businesses, which draw customers from across central Alberta, bring a different set again: inventory, tips and payroll, and GST on a high volume of small sales.

## How working with a Red Deer business actually runs

Everything is remote, and deliberately so: you get a CPA who replies, not one who happens to be near. A first conversation happens by email, with a video call if it helps. Documents move through a secure upload link rather than a courier or a drop-off, and signatures are electronic. Through the year you can email a question and no bill follows it, because the fee is fixed and agreed before the work begins. That matters, because the questions worth asking usually arrive before a decision, not after it.

The same CPA handles your file from start to finish, so the person who prepares your return is the person who answers your email. For Red Deer owners who spend their day on a job site, in a shop or with patients, that removes the two things that make an accountant hard to use: travel, and the hesitation to ask.

## What a Red Deer client’s year looks like

Books stay current monthly. GST is filed on the reporting period the CRA has assigned. Payroll remittances go on their own schedule, and T4 slips are filed by the last day of February. Before the fiscal year end we look at owner pay, bonuses and any equipment purchase that should land on one side of the date or the other. After it, the balance owing is due earlier than the returns: three months after year end for a Canadian-controlled private corporation claiming the small business deduction, with the T2 due at six months. The AT1 follows the same year end. With no provincial sales tax to file, the calendar is genuinely lighter than a BC or Ontario equivalent.

We work with owner-managed businesses in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba. See [accounting in Alberta](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta) for the provincial picture, or the [Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary) and [Edmonton](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton) pages if your business also operates in either city.

Common questions

## Questions from Red Deer business owners

**How much does an accountant cost in Red Deer?**

We charge fixed fees, quoted in writing after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. Published fees start at $100 for a personal return and $300 a month for bookkeeping; corporate returns and year-end statements are quoted individually. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts, and a Red Deer address does not change them.

**Can an accountant outside Red Deer file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. Federal and Alberta returns are prepared to the same rules wherever the CPA sits, and both are filed electronically. The one Alberta difference worth knowing is that the province administers its own corporate income tax, so there is an AT1 alongside the federal T2. We prepare both.

**How do we exchange documents securely?**

Through a secure upload link, which you can use from a phone in a truck as easily as from a desk. Bank and card feeds come in electronically, returns go back for e-signature, and nothing sensitive travels as an ordinary email attachment.

**Do you understand Alberta tax rules?**

Yes, including the separate AT1 return, the separate provincial instalment account, the absence of provincial sales tax and payroll tax, and Alberta’s own general holiday pay formula. Provincial specifics are part of the standard engagement, not an add-on.

**Is there a Red Deer office I can visit?**

No. EverStone is fully virtual and has no office in Red Deer, so there are no office visits. Nothing about a T2, an AT1, a GST return or CRA correspondence requires one: the work runs by email, video, secure upload and e-signature. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**I sell to customers outside Alberta. Does that change anything?**

It can. GST follows the place of supply, so a sale into a harmonized province carries that province’s HST rate rather than 5%, and selling into a province with its own sales tax can create a registration obligation there. Red Deer manufacturers shipping to other provinces should code sales by destination from the start.

**Should my Red Deer business incorporate?**

It depends on how much profit you can leave in the business. Alberta’s small-business rate is low, so the deferral on retained profit is real, but it only helps if you do not need every dollar personally. We run the numbers on your actual figures before you pay to incorporate. [When incorporating starts to pay](https://www.everstonecpa.com/incorporation-advice) sets out the logic.

How it works remotely

## Working with a virtual tax accountant in Red Deer

Alberta simplifies one thing and complicates another. There is no provincial sales tax, so a Red Deer corporation deals with GST alone — genuinely less administration than a two-tax province. But Alberta administers its own corporate income tax separately from the CRA, which means an AT1 alongside the federal T2 and its own [instalment](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html) stream to track.

Working with us online means that coordination is handled rather than delegated back to you: secure upload links for records, video meetings when they are useful, e-signature approvals, and a single CPA who knows which filing is due when. For Red Deer owners the recurring questions are owner pay, equipment timing and whether the corporation is paying the right instalments.

## Remote accounting

The firm operates virtually and serves Red Deer remotely. **There is no Red Deer office and no staff there.** Everything runs by email, video call and secure document exchange, so nothing about the engagement depends on being nearby. The person who answers your question in March is the one who prepared the return in June, which is the part a larger office structure tends to lose.

## How a remote engagement works in Alberta

A remote engagement removes the last reason to choose an accountant by driving distance, and Alberta’s filings are well suited to it.

- **Authorization, not paperwork.** You authorize us through Represent a Client from your CRA My Business Account, a few clicks on your side and no forms in the mail. That lets us see filings, balances and notices directly instead of asking you to forward them.

- **Documents move by secure upload link.** Bank statements, payroll records and year-end files are sent by secure upload link, never as email attachments. You can send from a phone.

- **Signatures are electronic.** Your T183 and engagement letter are signed in a browser. Nothing is printed, scanned or couriered.

- **Meetings are by video when they help.** Year-end review and planning conversations run this way, on your schedule rather than during a drive up or down the highway.

- **Filing is electronic.** The T2 goes to the CRA electronically and the AT1 to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration the same way.

### What is specific to Alberta

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so there is no PST registration and no provincial sales-tax return — GST alone. What Alberta does have is a separately administered corporate income tax, which means an Alberta corporation files the AT1 in addition to the federal T2. That is the single most common surprise for owners who incorporated elsewhere and moved.

Current Alberta rates and thresholds live on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts). Each figure there carries its source and the date it was checked, kept in one place rather than repeated across the site where it would go stale.

### Alberta questions we get

**Do I file a separate Alberta corporate return?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so an AT1 is filed with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration alongside the federal T2. Both are handled as one engagement here.

**Is there any Alberta sales tax to register for?**

No provincial sales tax exists in Alberta, so GST is the only sales-tax registration in play. If you sell into provinces that do have one, place-of-supply rules can still pull you into their systems.

**Do you work with businesses outside Red Deer itself?**

Yes. Businesses in Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Innisfail, Penhold and across Red Deer County are served exactly as Red Deer ones are: email, video, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.
