# Online Accountant for *Victoria*’s Consultants, Trades and Tech Businesses

EverStone CPA is a British Columbia accounting firm serving incorporated businesses across Victoria and the Capital Region entirely online — corporate tax, bookkeeping and clear advice from a Chartered Professional Accountant, at a fixed fee agreed before any work begins. Businesses in Saanich, Langford, Oak Bay and Esquimalt are served the same way.

**Who we help here:** Incorporated consultants contracting to the Province, Crown corporations, health authorities and the universities; trades and marine businesses; and tech founders billing clients off-Island — owners who want a CPA who answers, not one who is closer.

Why EverStone

## A BC CPA, which matters more here than a Victoria address

We are a British Columbia firm, so PST, GST and BC’s [Employer Health Tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#eht) are rules we apply every filing period rather than things we look up. A corporation in Victoria files the same T2 and carries the same provincial layer as one in Abbotsford — the province is what decides the arithmetic, not the municipality.

What being on the Island does change is logistics, and that is precisely the part a remote engagement removes. There is no box of receipts to deliver, no appointment to plan a sailing around, and no reason for the December year-end conversation to wait for a crossing. Documents move by secure upload, the year-end review happens on a video call, and signatures are electronic. That is how we work with every client, on the Island or off it.

For the honest version of what remote actually means in practice, including what it does not suit, see [accounting for BC businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-british-columbia) and how a virtual CPA engagement runs.

The work is the same wherever the business is registered in BC.

The Victoria question

## If you invoice the Province through a corporation, read this first

Victoria has an unusually high concentration of incorporated people doing contract work for one large institutional client — a ministry, a Crown corporation, a health authority, a university or a college. That arrangement is ordinary and legitimate. It also sits closer than most to the line the CRA draws around a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada).

The test is not about the client’s size or whether it is public sector. It turns on whether, absent the corporation, the worker would reasonably be regarded as an employee of that client: who controls the work, who supplies the tools, whether the contractor can hire a substitute, and where the financial risk sits. A corporation that fails it loses the small business deduction on that income and loses most ordinary business deductions with it — a difference measured in thousands, assessed years later, with interest.

This is worth a real answer before the year-end rather than after an assessment. The [PSB risk assessment A free tool that walks the factors CRA weighs for an incorporated contractor](https://www.everstonecpa.com/psb-risk-assessment) walks through the same questions a CRA reviewer asks, and [worker classification](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/employee-vs-contractor-cra-worker-classification) covers how the CRA actually decides. If your situation is not clear-cut, it is exactly the kind of question an enquiry is for.

Two taxes, two registrations

## BC charges GST and PST separately, and they do not agree with each other

A Victoria business that sells anything tangible, and many that sell services, can end up registered for both federal GST and provincial PST. They are different regimes with different registration triggers, different exemptions and separate returns filed to different governments. PST is not a smaller GST, and treating it as one is the most common BC bookkeeping error we correct.

The gap that surfaces late is usually PST on goods brought into the province for the business’s own use, or PST charged when it should not have been on an exempt sale. Both are correctable; both are cheaper to correct before a review than after. The [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts) sets out the provincial rates and thresholds, and GST/HST filing covers the federal side and the deadlines that go with each filing frequency.

What we do

## Accounting and tax services for Victoria businesses

### Corporate tax (T2)

The corporate return, year-end statements and the schedules behind them, filed on time with the balance date calculated for your year-end rather than assumed. [Corporate tax in Victoria →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-victoria)

### Bookkeeping

Monthly or quarterly books that stay reconciled, so the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction. [Bookkeeping in Victoria →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-victoria)

### GST and PST filing

Both registrations handled on their own schedules, including the instalment obligation annual filers often discover too late. [GST and PST in Victoria →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-filing-victoria)

### Payroll

Remittances, T4s and ROEs, including the seasonal patterns Victoria’s tourism and hospitality employers run on. [Payroll in Victoria →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-victoria)

### Personal tax (T1)

The owner’s return prepared alongside the corporation’s, because the remuneration decision is made once and shows up on both. [Personal tax in Victoria →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-victoria)

### Advice between filings

Asking a question is not a billing event. Incorporating, hiring, buying equipment or taking money out — the answer is easier before the transaction. [Business advisory →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/advisory-services)

The same four steps whether you are in Fairfield or Fort Langley.

How it runs

## Getting set up, without a sailing

The first conversation is an email enquiry about your year-end, your structure and what is currently unresolved. If it is a fit, you get a fixed fee in writing before any work starts, and that figure does not change unless the scope changes and you agree to it first.

After that, records are sent by secure upload rather than email attachment, we prepare and review, and you sign electronically. Between filings, questions are answered as they come up. Nothing in that sequence needs an office visit, which is why distance has no effect on the work or the fee.

The published fees are on the [pricing page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing), and the [fee estimate](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fee-estimate) gives a range for your situation in about a minute.

Common questions

## Questions Victoria owners ask first

**How much does an accountant cost in Victoria?**

We charge fixed fees, quoted up front after we review your enquiry, so there are no hourly surprises. Corporate tax returns and year-end financial statements are quoted individually after we review your enquiry; bookkeeping and personal tax are quoted based on your needs. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts, and working with us from Victoria costs the same as it does locally.

**Do I need an accountant on Vancouver Island?**

No. Corporate and personal tax are federal and provincial, and your corporation is a BC corporation whether its accountant is in Victoria or Abbotsford. What matters is that the firm is registered in BC and understands PST alongside GST. Everything else — documents, review, signatures — happens online. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**I contract to a ministry through my company. Is that a problem?**

Not by itself, and it is very common in Victoria. The risk is the personal services business rules, which turn on control, tools, substitution and financial risk rather than on who the client is. It is worth assessing properly, because the consequences land on the corporate return and are expensive to unwind. Start with the [PSB risk assessment](https://www.everstonecpa.com/psb-risk-assessment).

**Do you charge more because I am off the mainland?**

No. The fee is set by the work, not the distance, and the engagement is online from end to end. The published starting figures on the [pricing page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) apply the same way in Victoria as in Abbotsford.

**Can you take over part-way through a year?**

Yes, and it is the most common way engagements start. We ask your current accountant for the working papers, reconcile what exists, and tell you plainly what is missing before quoting. [Switching accountants](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) sets out the sequence.

**My books are behind by more than a year. Is that a problem?**

It is normal and it is fixable. Catch-up work is quoted separately from the ongoing engagement so you can see what each costs, and where CRA relief is available for penalties we tell you. [Behind on bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/behind-on-bookkeeping) explains how the catch-up runs.

**Do you work with businesses outside Victoria itself?**

Yes. EverStone works remotely, so businesses in Saanich, Langford, Oak Bay, Esquimalt and the Westshore are served exactly as Victoria ones are: video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at the same fixed fees.

Who we see most

## The businesses that come to us from the Capital Region

Victoria’s economy is not a smaller copy of Vancouver’s. Its largest employers are public, its private sector leans heavily on professional services and technology, and a great deal of the work is done by incorporated people rather than by firms with payrolls. That shapes which questions actually come up.

### Consultants with one institutional client

Policy, IT, engineering and communications contractors invoicing a ministry, a Crown corporation, a health authority or a university. The live question is almost always [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada) exposure, and it is worth settling before the year-end.

If you are comparing firms first, [what to ask an accountant in Victoria before you sign](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/choosing-an-accountant-victoria-bc) is written for exactly that.

### Tech and SaaS founders

Revenue from outside the province and often outside the country, which changes the GST treatment and adds foreign-exchange to the books. [Exports and non-residents](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-on-exports-and-non-residents) covers when a sale is zero-rated and what proof the CRA expects.

### Professional corporations

Physicians, lawyers, engineers and others operating through a professional corporation, where the remuneration decision and the corporate structure interact. [Incorporated professionals →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-incorporated-professionals)

### Trades and marine

Project work, holdbacks, subcontractors and the T5018 filing that goes with paying them. [Contractor accounting →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant)

### Tourism and hospitality

Revenue concentrated into a short season, which makes GST instalments, seasonal payroll and records of employment the recurring work rather than the year-end itself.

### Owners with rental property

A second property or a suite changes the personal return, and a change in how it is used changes it again. [Rental income →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/rental-income-tax-return)

The rhythm

## What a year with an incorporated Victoria business looks like

Most owners arrive expecting one annual event. In practice an incorporated business has a handful of fixed dates through the year, and the year-end is only the largest of them. Knowing which ones apply to you is most of what makes the year calm.

The recurring obligations for a typical incorporated Victoria business
The recurring obligations for a typical incorporated business, and what decides each one

| What | When it falls | What decides it |

| Corporate balance owing | Two or three months after year-end | Whether the corporation is a CCPC claiming the small business deduction |

| T2 corporate return | Six months after year-end | Your fiscal year-end date, which you chose at incorporation |

| GST/HST return | Monthly, quarterly or annually | Your taxable supplies; the CRA assigns the frequency and does not lower it on its own |

| GST instalments | Quarterly, for annual filers | Net tax in the previous year; missing them creates interest even if you pay in full later |

| Payroll remittances | Monthly for most new employers | Average monthly withholding; the threshold moves the due date, not the amount |

| T4 and T5 slips | The last day of February | Whether you paid salary or declared dividends in the calendar year |

| Personal return | 30 April, or 15 June if self-employed | The balance is still due 30 April either way |

Every date above is set out in full, with the CRA source for each, on [the CRA deadlines page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cra-tax-deadlines). The corporate ones are worked through on [the T2 deadline page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t2-deadline), including how the balance date and the filing date come apart.

**Fixed fees**Clear, fixed pricing. You approve the fee before any work begins. No surprise bills.

**One day**We reply to every enquiry within one business day, usually the same day.

**CPA-led**Every file is handled personally by a CPA, never passed to junior staff.

**No obligation**Sending an enquiry is free, with zero pressure and no obligation.

In practice

## What working across the strait actually involves

**What you do.** Send records once a month or once a quarter, depending on the engagement, through a secure upload rather than as email attachments. Answer a short list of questions at year-end. Sign electronically. That is the whole of it.

**What we do.** Keep the books reconciled, file what is due when it is due, and tell you before a deadline rather than after it. Every file is handled by a CPA rather than passed down, which is the reason the fee is what it is.

**What does not happen.** No hourly meter on a phone call. No invoice for asking a question. No trip to the mainland, and no expectation that you will courier anything.

**What we will tell you plainly.** If a situation needs someone local — an in-person audit defence, say, or a valuation requiring site attendance — we will say so rather than take the work. That is rare, and it is better said at the consult than discovered later.
