Why EverStone

## A BC CPA for West Vancouver corporations

West Vancouver is largely residential, so much of its business runs from home offices, clinics and small storefronts in Ambleside and Dundarave. Many owners work downtown or elsewhere on the North Shore, but keep their corporation, family and investments here.

You work with one Chartered Professional Accountant who knows your numbers year-round. Questions come by email, meetings happen by video when they help, documents arrive through a secure upload link, and returns are signed electronically.

## Which return applies to you

Which return applies to you
The structure you trade under decides the return — for a business operating in West Vancouver, British Columbia

| If you are | You file |

| A consultant with your own company | A T2 corporate return, with financial statement schedules, and your own T1 |

| An incorporated professional | A T2 for the professional corporation, plus your own T1 |

| An owner with a holding company | A separate T2 for each corporation, with dividends between them reported on both |

| A sole proprietor | A T1 personal return with form T2125 for the business |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST plus 7% BC PST: two registrations, two returns |

## Owner pay: salary, dividends or a mix

Each year an incorporated owner decides how to take money out. Salary is deductible to the corporation, creates RRSP room and requires CPP contributions. Dividends come from after-tax profit, need no payroll account and carry no CPP.

The right mix depends on your other income, your family and what you plan to save. We model it before year-end. The [salary vs dividends calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator) shows the trade-off, and [CPP for incorporated owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/cpp-for-incorporated-business-owners-canada) covers the pension side.

Money taken without a plan lands in the [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation) account, and left too long it becomes taxable income.

## Holding companies and money left in the corporation

Many West Vancouver owners keep a second corporation above the operating one. It receives dividends, holds investments and keeps surplus cash away from business risk, but adds a second T2 each year.

Enough investment income can shrink the small business deduction for the whole group. We track that each year, with [the passive income rules](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/small-business-deduction-passive-income-canada) and [associated corporations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/associated-corporations-small-business-deduction) in view.

A holding company is not always worth the extra filings; [when a holding company makes sense](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/holding-company-canada-when-it-makes-sense) sets out the tests.

## Incorporated professionals and consultants

Doctors, dentists, lawyers and other regulated professionals usually incorporate through a professional corporation. Their regulator decides who may hold shares, which affects how income can reach family members. See [accounting for incorporated professionals](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-incorporated-professionals).

A consultant who works for one client, under that client’s direction, can be treated as a personal services business. That loses the small business deduction and most expenses. We review the contracts first. [Consultants on the North Shore](https://www.everstonecpa.com/consultant-accountant-north-vancouver) and [IT consultants in BC](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-it-consultants-bc) have their own pages.

British Columbia tax, in practice

## What BC adds for a West Vancouver corporation

Provincial rules sit on top of the federal ones, and each has its own registration and calendar.

### Two sales taxes

BC charges **5% GST and 7% PST** as separate taxes with separate returns. GST registration becomes mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters. The [BC PST guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-pst-small-business-guide) covers registration.

### Corporate rates

BC taxes active business income under the small business deduction at **2%** and other income at **12%**, on a $500,000 limit shared by associated corporations. The figures are on the [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts).

### Payroll layers

WorkSafeBC registration and premiums for every employer, and the employer health tax once BC remuneration passes $1,000,000. BC vacation pay starts at 4% and rises to 6% after five years.

The T2 is due six months later, the balance in two or three. We plan before year-end, while a bonus, dividend or RRSP-building salary can still help.

A BC corporation also files a provincial annual report each year. [Catch-up work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping) fixes books that are behind, and [switching accountants](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) covers a move from another firm.

Common questions

## Common questions from West Vancouver owners

**How much does an accountant cost in West Vancouver?**

Fees are fixed and quoted in writing before work starts. Personal returns start from $125 and monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month; corporate returns are quoted after a free consultation. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) show where each service starts. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Should I take salary or dividends from my corporation?**

It depends on your income, savings plans and family. We model both before year-end and recommend a mix in writing.

**Can my spouse or adult children receive dividends?**

Possibly. The income-splitting rules tax most family dividends at the top rate unless an exclusion applies, such as active work in the business. We check before any dividend is declared.

**Can an accountant outside West Vancouver file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. T2, T1, GST and payroll filings are federal systems, and BC corporate tax is collected with the federal return. None of it depends on where the CPA’s desk is.

**Does EverStone have a West Vancouver office?**

No. EverStone works online. West Vancouver businesses are served remotely by email, video meeting, a secure upload link and e-signature.

**Do you work with businesses outside West Vancouver itself?**

Yes. Businesses in Horseshoe Bay, Lions Bay, Bowen Island and the rest of the North Shore are served exactly as West Vancouver ones are, at the same fixed fees.
