# Choosing an accountant in Calgary, *and what to ask first*

By EverStone CPA · Published September 2026 · 7 min read

**Quick answer:** Calgary businesses live with cycles. Energy services, the trades that follow them and the professional corporations that serve everyone else all see good years and thin ones, and the accounting decisions that matter are about timing: when to buy equipment, how to pay yourself, what to hold back. Choose an accountant who plans with you through the cycle, fixes the fee in writing, stays on your file personally and knows that Alberta’s one sales tax is not the whole story.

**Planning through the good and thin years?** We plan equipment timing, owner pay and reserves with Calgary owners through each cycle, then file the T2 at year end, at a fee quoted in writing. [Get My Fixed Quote](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online?service=planning#enquiry-form)

## Why Calgary is a different search

Calgary is full of accountants and oil and gas specialists. Owner-managed firms need one who understands capital-heavy, cyclical businesses that are not producers: energy services, equipment operators, trades and consultants, all with uneven income and timing-driven decisions.

With no PST, Alberta sales tax is GST only. Filing is simpler; the file is not. Equipment timing, bonus accruals and salary versus dividends decide a Calgary corporation’s tax.

The professional corporations, physicians, engineers and consultants working through a company of their own, carry the personal services business question if they have one main client. Ask about it directly.

## The questions that separate firms

### 1. How do you plan through a cycle?

Ask how the firm handles strong and weak years: capital purchase timing, salary and dividends, and what is held back. An annual spring visit means nobody manages the cycle.

Start with the credential. CPA members and public accounting firms in Alberta are listed in [CPA Alberta’s member and firm lookup](https://www.cpaalberta.ca/Protecting-the-Public/Verify-a-Member-or-Firm); a minute there confirms that the person and the firm you are talking to are who they say they are.

### 2. Who does the work, and who signs it?

Ask who prepares, who reviews and who signs, and whether that changes from year to year. One CPA on the file from first email to filed return is the arrangement that remembers what last year’s decision was for.

### 3. Is the fee fixed and in writing before the work starts?

A cyclical business should not carry an uncertain accounting bill. Ask for the number in writing before anything begins and what would move it. Transaction volume, the condition of the books, the number of filings and payroll are fair answers.

### 4. How do you handle equipment?

For an energy services or equipment-heavy trades business, ask how purchases are timed against the year-end, how financing is recorded and how the first-year claim is handled. A firm that does this work answers specifically.

### 5. For a professional corporation: PSB and how I pay myself?

Ask whether the firm assesses personal services business risk for a one-client corporation and how it plans salary against dividends during the year. Both should be raised unprompted.

### 6. What does switching involve?

Authorisation with the CRA, a file request to your previous firm, and work continues from the last filed year-end. Mid-year is fine, and a backlog is quoted separately.

## How to compare two Calgary quotes

Compare inclusions: T2, statements, GST, payroll and T4s, the owner’s T1 and year-round questions. In Calgary the in-year planning is what matters; a quote without it is cheap only until the next downturn.

Then ask what would change the fee and whether you would hear about it first.

## Red flags worth walking away from

- The firm has no view on timing purchases or pay through a cycle.

- A fee described as an estimate, or tied to an hourly rate.

- PSB risk never raised for a professional corporation with one main client.

- Equipment financing and first-year claims handled “however the software does it”.

- Nobody will name the person who prepares and reviews the file.

A free thirty-minute conversation covers what the business does, where it is in its cycle and what is filed now, and ends with a fixed fee in writing.

Common questions

## Frequently asked questions about choosing an accountant in Calgary

These are the questions particular to this search. [The full FAQ](https://www.everstonecpa.com/faq) covers fees, timing and what the first year looks like.

**Does my accountant need to be in Calgary?**

No. Filings, signatures and records are electronic, and Alberta’s corporate rules are federal rules plus a provincial return the CRA collects for Alberta. EverStone works with Calgary clients online.

**Alberta has no PST. Does that make the accounting simpler?**

The sales-tax filing is simpler. The file is not: timing of equipment, salary against dividends and what to hold back through a cycle are where the tax result is decided.

**Can I switch mid-year?**

Yes. Authorise the new firm with the CRA, the new firm requests your file, and work continues from the last filed year-end. Catch-up is quoted separately.

**How is the fee set for a Calgary business?**

By transaction volume, the state of the books, the number of filings and payroll, as a fixed fee in writing after we review your enquiry. Starting points are on the pricing page.
