# Choosing an accountant in Chilliwack, *and what to ask first*

By EverStone CPA · Published September 2026 · 7 min read

**Quick answer:** Chilliwack’s economy is hands-on: dairy and agriculture, homebuilding and trades around Sardis and Vedder, and small manufacturers. Its accounting problems are concrete too: quota, herds, equipment and work in progress. Choose an accountant on whether they have handled those things before, whether the fee is fixed in writing, whether the same person stays on your file, and whether you can reach them between year-ends.

## Why Chilliwack is a different search

Most guides assume an office-based service business. Chilliwack is defined by farms, trades and manufacturers, whose accounting a general practice may rarely see.

Farm accounting is its own discipline: dairy quota and herd valued at year-end, AgriInvest and AgriStability deadlines, and seasonal cash flow that makes purchase and tax timing matter more.

Trades and manufacturing bring subcontractor slips, WorkSafeBC clearance, holdbacks and year-end work-in-progress, plus BC’s two separately filed sales taxes. Your firm should know these cold.

## The questions that separate firms

### 1. Have you prepared a farm year-end, and how recently?

Ask about the last farm file the firm did, who did it and what was hard. Real experience names specifics: quota valuation, an unreconciled herd count, a restated AgriStability form. Inexperience speaks in generalities.

Start with the credential. CPA members and public accounting firms in British Columbia are listed in [CPABC’s member and firm directories](https://www.bccpa.ca/protecting-the-public/cpabc-member-firm-directories/); a minute there confirms that the person and the firm you are talking to are who they say they are.

### 2. Who does the work, and who signs it?

The person you meet may not prepare your return, and preparers change. Ask who prepares, reviews and signs. You want a name, the same next year.

### 3. Is the fee fixed and in writing?

Ask for a written fixed fee before work and what would change it. A fair answer cites volume, book condition, filings and payroll, not an hourly rate.

### 4. How do you handle timing?

For farms and equipment-heavy trades, purchase and income timing around year-end changes the tax. Ask how the firm plans that during the year. Seeing you once each spring leaves those decisions to chance.

### 5. Do you know both sales taxes?

BC GST and PST have different rules, registrations and periods, and PST catches goods sellers, equipment renters and some contractors. Ask how the firm ties PST to sales records; indifference is a warning.

### 6. What does switching involve?

You [authorize the new accountant with the CRA](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/representative-authorization/overview.html), the file moves over, and work resumes from the last filed year-end. Mid-year is fine, and any backlog is quoted separately first.

**Comparing accountants in Chilliwack?** Put these same questions to us. One CPA handles your file from quote to filing, the fee is fixed in writing before work starts, and we work with Chilliwack farms, contractors and service businesses, online. ## How to compare two Chilliwack quotes

List what each quote includes: program filings for farms, T5018 slips and clearance letters for trades, payroll and T4s for employers. Only like-for-like quotes compare.

Then ask what questions through the year cost. The firm that includes them is usually the cheaper one over a full year even when its headline number is higher, because the decisions that save tax happen before the year-end, not after it.

## Red flags worth walking away from

- No experience with program filings on a farm file, or a plan to “look into it”.

- A fee that is described as an estimate, or that depends on an hourly rate.

- PST not mentioned for a business that sells goods or rents equipment.

- The year-end is the only time the firm expects to hear from you.

- Nobody can say who will actually prepare and review the file.

A free thirty-minute conversation covers what the business does, what is filed now and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation. The work runs online, so the drive is not part of it.

Common questions

## Frequently asked questions about choosing an accountant in Chilliwack

These are the questions particular to this search. [The full FAQ](https://www.everstonecpa.com/faq) covers fees, timing and what the first year looks like.

**Does my accountant need to be in Chilliwack?**

No. The work is electronic end to end. What matters is experience with the kind of business you run and with BC’s two sales taxes. EverStone works with Chilliwack clients online, and most never need to visit.

**What is different about a dairy or farm file?**

Quota and the herd need valuing, program filings have their own deadlines, income is seasonal and capital purchases have to be timed against the year-end. A firm that has done this work will talk about it specifically.

**Can I switch part-way through a year?**

Yes. Authorisation with the CRA, a file request to the previous firm, and work continues from the last filed year-end. Catch-up is quoted separately.

**How are fees set for a Chilliwack business?**

By transaction volume, the condition of the books, the number of filings and whether there is payroll, quoted as a fixed fee in writing after we review your enquiry. Starting points are published on the pricing page.
