# CPA vs Tax Preparer in Canada: *What the Letters Actually Change*

By EverStone CPA · August 2026 · 2 min read

**Quick answer:** “Tax preparer” is a job description; CPA is a regulated designation. Anyone may prepare a tax return in Canada — [“accountant” is not even a protected title](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeper-vs-accountant-vs-cpa) — while a CPA answers to a provincial body for exams, experience, continuing education and conduct. For a simple personal return the difference may not matter. For a corporation, a CRA letter, or a decision with money attached, it usually does.

What this covers, at a glance.

## CPA or tax preparer: who regulates whom

A CPA in British Columbia is governed by CPABC — admission exams, supervised experience, mandatory continuing education, professional conduct rules, and a public register where [anyone can verify the designation](https://www.everstonecpa.com/how-to-verify-a-cpa-bc). A tax preparer, however experienced, is subject to none of that as a matter of law. That does not make every preparer careless — it means the accountability structures are personal rather than institutional.

## What each can do

Both can prepare and file returns. The differences appear at the edges: financial statements under a professional standard come from a CPA firm with a [public practice licence](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-engagement-canada). Representation strategy when the CRA asks questions benefits from someone whose designation is on the line alongside your file; and planning — [remuneration](https://www.everstonecpa.com/salary-vs-dividends-calculator), incorporation, timing — is judgement work, which is what the designation trains.

**Want a CPA rather than a preparer?** One Chartered Professional Accountant handles your file from quote to filing, at a fixed fee agreed first. ## Which one you need

An employed person with a T4 and some slips is well served almost anywhere, and paying CPA rates for that return buys little. An incorporated owner is in different territory: the [T2](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html), the GIFI statements behind it, the salary-dividend decision each year, and the CRA correspondence that follows corporations around. That is designation work, and it is why this firm publishes [fixed fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) for it rather than hourly mystery.

Once the CPA question is settled, the choice is between individual firms — [choosing between the firms that are left](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/choosing-an-accountant-mission-bc) sets out what to ask each of them.

## Common questions

**Is a tax preparer cheaper than a CPA?**

Usually, for the same simple return, and for a simple return that can be the right trade. The comparison changes when the return is corporate or the year holds a decision: the fee difference is small against the cost of a missed election or a wrong structure. **How do I check whether someone is really a CPA?**

Every provincial CPA body keeps a public register. In BC, the check takes a minute — the [verification guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/how-to-verify-a-cpa-bc) walks through it. A designation someone will not let you verify is not a designation.

**Can a tax preparer represent me with the CRA?**

The CRA deals with whoever you authorize. The question is not access but what happens under pressure: a CPA answers professionally for the positions taken on your file, and that changes how positions get taken in the first place.
