# Small business and fractional CFO for *Calgary* energy services companies

When revenue follows a commodity cycle, the job isn’t forecasting the cycle — nobody can — but surviving the bottom and moving at the top. See the [fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo) page. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Calgary businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary).

**Quick answer:** A fractional CFO is senior financial leadership engaged part-time. For a Calgary services company the work is scenario planning against a downturn, managing covenant headroom deliberately, holding capital discipline through a strong year, and knowing day-rate margin precisely enough to decide which work is worth bidding. Fractional CFO work starts at $2,750 a month.

Filings include T4 slips, Schedule 1, Schedule 50 and CCA.

A part-time, remote small business CFO: Calgary fractional CFO services monthly, with a [fractional controller](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fractional-controller-services) closing the books.

Leverage worsens in a downturn even when the debt has not moved at all.

## Plan for the downside before it is needed

Don’t predict activity; plan for defined declines — revenue down a quarter, down a half — and what changes at each, in what order, by when: which costs are variable or contractual, which equipment could go, and where covenants stand.

Done in advance, that plan has decision points and triggers. Built mid-downturn, it is late reactions under pressure. The difference is when the thinking happened.

## Covenant headroom is something to manage, not to discover

Covenants are calculated from year-end figures on the credit agreement’s definitions, so falling earnings can breach one with no operational failure. Finding out after statements are issued leaves only weak-position negotiation.

Tracking the covenant quarterly, on the agreement’s definitions rather than statement captions, shows headroom narrowing in time to act. If a breach is coming, approaching the lender early with a plan is a far better conversation. See [year-end statements in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-calgary).

## Capital discipline in a strong year

Downturn damage is usually set during the boom: equipment bought at peak prices on peak financing assumptions, staff hired for passing demand, overhead sized to temporary revenue. Each looks prudent at the top.

Test every significant commitment against mid-cycle revenue, not current, and against its debt service at the bottom of the cycle. Make the purchases that pass; defer the rest, an easy call once the test exists.

## Day-rate and job-level margin

Services companies often price to the market and find the margin later. A fully loaded cost per crew, unit or service line — labour with travel and standby, consumables, maintenance, mobilization, equipment and overhead — makes pricing a decision.

It also shows which work is worth having. In a soft market, work below variable cost burns cash faster than idleness. Knowing that line by service lets you bid hard where you can afford it and decline where you can’t.

## Diversification and what it actually costs

Diversifying away from one commodity cycle is sound but costly without analysis. An adjacent market usually needs non-transferable equipment, certifications, a long sales lead time and low utilization while work is won.

First ask how much capital the move consumes before it contributes, and whether you could carry that if the core market weakened at the same time, which is exactly when the pressure to diversify peaks. From strength it works; from weakness it often accelerates the problem.

## When it is not the right spend

If the books are behind or there is no job costing, fix that first; scenarios on bad data are confidently wrong. A simple, low-debt company with an owner who knows the numbers may not need this, and [the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) make that easy to judge.

It earns its place with covenanted debt, a big capital decision, a downturn under way, or a riskier growth plan. Otherwise, good records and a timely year end matter more. See [Calgary energy services accounting](https://www.everstonecpa.com/energy-services-accountant-calgary).

## How the engagement works

Calgary engagements run remotely, with the scope agreed in writing beforehand. Fractional CFO services Calgary companies engage this way start at $2,750 a month.

This suits incorporated oilfield and industrial services companies, equipment and rental operators, and engineering and technical firms. Alberta corporate income tax is administered provincially, so the corporate filings include a provincial return; see the [Alberta tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) page.

## What a CFO engagement covers

What a CFO engagement covers
Advisory work, separate from compliance filing — for a business operating in Calgary, Alberta

| Area | What it means in practice |

| Cash flow | A forward view of what is coming in and going out, not last quarter’s history |

| Forecasting | A model you can test decisions against before you make them |

| Pricing and margin | Which work earns money and which quietly does not |

| Owner compensation | How salary and dividends interact with the corporate return |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST only. Alberta levies no provincial sales tax |

## Remote CFO support

EverStone works online as a sole practitioner CPA firm. **There is no Calgary office and no local staff.** Video or phone calls, secure email and e-signature, no visits. Forecasts sit on the same file as the year-end, so board pack and tax return agree.

The moment there are employees, [payroll in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-calgary) becomes the recurring obligation.

The year end this all feeds into is [corporate tax in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-calgary).

Strategic decisions run on figures that arrive in time to use, which is [reporting you can actually act on](https://www.everstonecpa.com/management-reporting).

When the gap is a dependable month-end close and reporting pack rather than strategy, a fractional controller instead is the narrower, cheaper first step.

Common questions

## Calgary energy services CFO questions

**How do you plan for a downturn you cannot predict?**

Plan for defined declines instead of forecasting them: at revenue down a quarter and down a half, what changes, in what order, by when. Prepared early, it has trigger points; assembled mid-downturn, it is late reactions. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How do I know if a covenant is about to be breached?**

Calculate it quarterly on the credit agreement’s definitions, not statement captions, which rarely match. You see headroom narrowing in time, and an early approach to the lender beats a call after statements are issued.

**What is capital discipline in a strong year?**

Test each significant commitment against mid-cycle revenue and against its debt service at the bottom of the cycle. Make the purchases that pass; defer the rest.

**Should I take work below my target margin in a soft market?**

Sometimes, but never below variable cost; that burns cash faster than idleness. Finding the line needs a fully loaded cost per crew, unit or service line, including standby, mobilization, consumables and equipment.

**Is diversifying into another market a good idea?**

Only if you can fund it. Adjacent markets need non-transferable equipment, certifications, long sales lead times and low early utilization, and the urge peaks when the core market is weak, the worst time to carry that.

**Do you have a Calgary office?**

No. EverStone works online, and Calgary engagements run remotely by video call, email and secure upload.

**What does a fractional CFO cost for a Calgary business?**

Fractional CFO work starts at $2,750 a month; a fractional controller for close and reporting, at $1,650 a month. Both fixed in writing. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Calgary itself?**

Yes. Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere get the same service by video, phone, email and secure upload, at the same fixed fees.
