# Fractional CFO support for *Steinbach* manufacturers, builders and carriers

Many of Steinbach’s growing companies are family-run manufacturers, builders, carriers and dealers that have outgrown a bookkeeper and a once-a-year meeting with the accountant, but are not ready for a full-time finance lead. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Steinbach businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-steinbach).

The job is knowing which work makes money, what the cash will look like before it arrives, and whether the next big decision pays. The general service is on the [fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo) page.

**Quick answer:** A fractional CFO is senior financial leadership engaged part-time. For a Steinbach manufacturer, builder or carrier the work is a defensible cost per unit, job or mile, profitability by product, customer or contract, a cash forecast that sees the seasons coming, and lender-ready reporting. Fractional CFO work starts at $2,500 a month.

Steinbach CFO work starts from $2,500 a month. The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

A fractional CFO for a Steinbach company works remotely by the month; the [fractional controller](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fractional-controller-services) half closes the month and prices the job, unit or load before the CFO half decides anything about it.

## The companies this is for

The City of Steinbach’s community plan lists manufacturing, construction, retail trade and transportation and warehousing among the largest fields its residents work in, and says industrial development plays a significant role in the local economy. The companies that most often need CFO-level support come from exactly those fields: a fabricator or manufacturer that has added a second shift or a second building, a builder running several crews and a growing backlog, a carrier that has gone from a few units to a real fleet, or a dealership group. Often there is more than one company in the family, and the next generation is starting to take over. Their accounting is usually fine. What is missing is the forward view.

## Cost per unit, per job, per mile

Everything downstream depends on this figure being right. For a manufacturer it means separating materials and direct labour from the fixed cost of the plant. For a builder it means job costs that include the real cost of the crew, the equipment and the supervision, not only materials and subcontractors. For a carrier it means separating what varies with distance — fuel, tires, wear-related maintenance — from what accrues with time regardless of movement, such as insurance, licensing, financing and driver pay structures that are not purely mileage-based.

A single blended rate applied to everything hides which work is profitable. The separated version shows whether a price covers the marginal cost of the work and whether it also contributes to fixed cost, and it shows which of the two the business should optimize for at a given moment.

## Profitability by product, customer and contract

Manufacturers face the long-tail problem: low-volume items consume changeover time, inventory space and attention out of all proportion to their contribution, and the cost of carrying them is never attributed. Builders face it by contract type — custom homes versus spec homes versus commercial work, or jobs in the city versus jobs further out in Hanover or Niverville with more travel time. Carriers face it by lane, where a well-paying outbound leg attached to a poor return leg can be a loss overall. In each case the analysis usually finds a small number of relationships doing most of the damage, and they are actionable once identified.

## Capacity and overhead

A plant running at sixty percent of capacity carries the same rent, the same core staffing and the same depreciation as one running at ninety, spread across far fewer units. A fleet with a truck parked for want of a driver still carries that truck’s full cost. Understanding how the cost base behaves at different volumes is what lets a business answer whether a lower-priced order is worth taking to fill capacity, and where the point is beyond which it is not — and whether the new building or the extra units are justified by the volume actually in hand.

## Cash flow through the seasons

Steinbach businesses do not earn evenly through the year. Builders and trades are busiest from spring to fall and carry payroll, materials and equipment payments before the progress draws and holdbacks come in. Retailers and dealers have their own seasonal peaks. Manufacturers buy materials ahead of orders. A thirteen-week cash forecast, updated monthly, shows the tight weeks before they arrive, so the operating line is arranged in advance and corporate instalments, GST and RST remittances and payroll do not all land in the same short month.

## Capital decisions and the small business limit

A new press brake, a loader, another tractor unit, or a building in an industrial park is a decision the business lives with for a decade. The CFO work is modelling the purchase against the volume it needs to pay for itself, comparing buying with leasing, and timing it so the capital cost allowance falls in a useful year. In Manitoba there is a second dimension: income eligible for the small business deduction carries a nil provincial rate, so qualifying income is taxed at 9% combined, while income above the $500,000 limit is taxed at 27%. For a growing Steinbach company, keeping the business limit intact — watching passive income and the effect of associated companies in a family group — is worth planning rather than discovering. [Associated corporations and the small business deduction](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/associated-corporations-small-business-deduction) explains the trap.

## Labour cost and the price of turnover

Skilled production labour, trades and drivers are scarce and expensive to replace, and the cost of turnover is almost never quantified. Recruitment, training, lower productivity during ramp-up, and an idle unit or machine while a seat is unfilled all belong in the calculation. Once that figure exists, retention spending can be assessed properly rather than argued about. The [year-end statements in Steinbach](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-steinbach) page covers the reporting side.

## Reporting a lender or bonding company accepts

Growth brings lenders who want monthly or quarterly reporting: covenant calculations, aged receivables, borrowing-base certificates, and for builders the work-in-progress schedule a bonding company reads. A monthly management pack built from properly closed books — income statement against budget, balance sheet, cash forecast, and the few operating measures that matter for your business — answers those requests without a scramble, and gives the owner the same picture the bank is looking at.

## When this is not the right investment

All of the above needs operational data: hours by job, production volumes, miles and hours by unit. Where that does not exist, building it is the first project, because analysis built on estimated inputs produces confident conclusions that are unreliable. The threshold is usually a specific problem: margin declining without an obvious cause, a large equipment or building decision, a customer whose volume has grown enough to matter, a succession plan, or growth that has strained cash. Absent one of those, accurate monthly [bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-steinbach) and a timely year-end deliver more for less.

## How the engagement works

Steinbach engagements run remotely, with scope, cadence and cost agreed in writing beforehand. EverStone is a fully virtual CPA firm serving BC, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba; there is no Steinbach office. This suits incorporated manufacturers and machine shops, builders and trades, carriers and owner-operator fleets, and dealers and retailers in Steinbach and across the Southeast. Companies with operations in the city are served the same way as our [Winnipeg CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cfo-services-winnipeg) clients. Manitoba corporate income tax is collected federally; see the [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) page for current rates and thresholds.

Common questions

## Steinbach CFO questions

**What does a fractional CFO do that my accountant does not?**

Your accountant reports on what happened. A fractional CFO works on what happens next: cash forecasts, pricing and margin by product or job, capital decisions and lender reporting, reviewed with you every month. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**How should cost per job or unit be calculated?**

By separating costs that vary with the work — materials, direct labour, fuel — from fixed costs that accrue regardless, such as rent, insurance, financing and supervision. A single blended rate hides which work is profitable; the separated version shows whether a price covers marginal cost and contributes to overhead.

**We are buying new equipment — can you model it?**

Yes. The model compares buying with leasing, tests the purchase against the volume needed to pay for it, and shows the effect on cash, the loan covenants and the tax return, including when the capital cost allowance is most useful.

**Our family has several companies — does that matter?**

It can. Associated companies share one $500,000 small business limit and one payroll levy exemption, so growth in one company can raise the tax rate in another. A CFO view across the whole group is where that shows up.

**Does EverStone have an office in Steinbach?**

No. EverStone works online, with no Steinbach office. Operational data, cost reports and schedules travel as files, so the analysis does not depend on being in the same town.

**Do you work with companies outside Steinbach itself?**

Yes. Companies in Hanover, Niverville, Mitchell, Blumenort and the rest of the Southeast are served on the same footing as those in Steinbach, over email, video and a secure upload link, at identical fixed fees.

### Who this is for, and who it is not

This serves a Steinbach manufacturer, builder, carrier or dealer that needs monthly numbers to act on, short of hiring a full-time finance lead. ## Remote CFO support

The firm operates virtually and serves Steinbach remotely. **There is no Steinbach office and no staff based there.** Work runs by video call, email and secure document exchange, so distance does not matter. Product, job and lane margins are drawn from the books that produce the year-end, so the two agree.

The year-end this all feeds into is [corporate returns for Steinbach owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-steinbach).

Strategic decisions run on figures that arrive in time to use, which is [the monthly pack behind those decisions](https://www.everstonecpa.com/management-reporting).

If the month does not yet close reliably, a fractional controller instead is the cheaper place to begin.
