# Fractional CFO support for *Winkler* manufacturers and growing firms

Manufacturing shares a financial signature with most capital-heavy businesses: high fixed cost, thin margin per unit, and profit that depends on volume flowing through a plant that has already been paid for. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Winkler businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-winkler).

Getting the unit economics right is therefore most of the job. The general service is on the [fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo) page.

**Quick answer:** A fractional CFO is senior financial leadership engaged part-time. For a Winkler manufacturer or growing owner-managed firm, the work is a defensible cost per unit, profitability by product and customer, a cash forecast that sees the seasonal swings coming, and clear numbers before a capacity or equipment decision. For a Winkler business, fractional CFO work starts at $2,500 a month.

Winkler CFO work starts from $2,500 a month. The year-end it sits on covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

A fractional CFO for a Winkler business works remotely by the month; the [fractional controller](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fractional-controller-services) half closes the month and costs the product before the CFO half decides anything about it.

## Why this matters in Winkler

Winkler is the largest centre in the Pembina Valley and one of Manitoba’s fastest-growing cities, and it has become an industrial centre for southern Manitoba with manufacturing plants and foundries alongside retail and services. Growth of that kind puts the same questions in front of owners again and again: whether to add a shift, buy a machine, put up a building, take on a large customer or hire ahead of demand. Those are CFO questions. The City of Winkler’s Commercial and Industrial Financial Assistance Program, which credits new municipal taxes arising from an addition, renovation or new construction, is one of the inputs worth putting into a building decision before it is made.

## Cost per unit, built properly

Everything downstream depends on this figure being right. For a manufacturer it means separating materials and direct labour, which vary with each unit, from the fixed cost of the plant — rent or building costs, supervision, depreciation, insurance and the core staff who are paid regardless of volume. A single blended rate applied to everything hides which work is profitable. The separated version shows whether a price covers the marginal cost of making the product, whether it also contributes to fixed cost, and which of the two the business should be optimizing for at a given moment.

## Profitability by product and customer

Most shops know their best-selling products; fewer know which products and customers actually make money. A long tail of low-volume items consumes changeover time, inventory space and administrative attention out of proportion to what it contributes, and it persists because the cost of carrying it has never been measured. Large customers bring volume but often negotiate price, payment terms and custom requirements that eat into margin. The analysis usually finds a small number of products or relationships doing most of the damage, and they are actionable once identified. See [job and product margin work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing-and-margin-analysis).

## Capacity, overhead and the second shift

A plant running well below capacity carries the same building, core staff and depreciation as one running close to full, spread over far fewer units. Unit cost is therefore largely a function of volume, and comparing this year’s unit cost with last year’s without adjusting for volume produces conclusions that are simply wrong. Understanding how the cost base behaves at different volumes is what lets an owner answer whether a lower-priced order is worth taking to fill capacity, when a second shift pays for itself, and where the point is beyond which a new machine or building is the cheaper route.

## Cash, seasons and the bank

Winkler’s economy has its roots in agriculture, and businesses that sell to farms or serve a farm market see cash move with the season. A manufacturer building inventory ahead of a selling season carries materials and labour for months before it is paid. A thirteen-week cash forecast, rolled forward each month, shows when the operating line will be stretched, how much room remains under its margin conditions, and whether a payment-terms change with a large customer is worth negotiating. It is also what a lender wants to see before increasing a facility. See [cash flow management](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cash-flow-management) and [seasonal cash flow](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/managing-cash-flow-seasonal-business-canada).

## Labour cost and the price of turnover

Skilled production labour is scarce and expensive to replace, and the cost of turnover is almost never quantified. Recruitment, training, lower productivity while a new hire ramps up and the overtime paid to cover the gap all belong in the calculation. Once that figure exists, retention spending can be assessed properly rather than argued about. A pay or scheduling change that reduces turnover often costs less than the turnover it prevents, but the comparison cannot be made until somebody puts a number on the current cost.

## Tax decisions that sit inside the plan

A Manitoba corporation pays a nil provincial rate on income eligible for the small business deduction, up to the $500,000 business limit, and 27% combined above it. A large equipment purchase, the timing of CCA, a dividend to the owner, or a holding company for retained earnings all interact with that limit. The CFO plan and the corporate tax plan are the same plan, which is why they are best held by the same accountant. See [corporate tax in Winkler](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-winkler) and the [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) page.

## When this is not the right investment

All of the above needs operational data: production volumes, hours booked to jobs or products, and a month-end that closes reliably. Where that does not exist, building it is the first project, because analysis on estimated inputs produces confident conclusions that are unreliable. The threshold is usually a specific problem: margin declining without an obvious cause, a large equipment or building decision, a customer whose volume has grown enough to matter, or growth that has strained cash. Without one of those, accurate records and a timely year-end deliver more.

## How the engagement works

Winkler engagements run online, with scope, cadence and cost agreed in writing beforehand. A monthly pack arrives after the close, and a review by video call goes through it with the owner.

## What a CFO engagement covers

What a CFO engagement covers
Advisory work, separate from compliance filing — for a business operating in Winkler, Manitoba

| Area | What it means in practice |

| Cash flow | A forward view of what is coming in and going out, not last quarter’s history |

| Forecasting | A model you can test decisions against before you make them |

| Pricing and margin | Which work earns money and which quietly does not |

| Owner compensation | How salary and dividends interact with the corporate return |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST plus 7% Manitoba retail sales tax — two registrations, two returns |

Common questions

## Winkler CFO questions

**How should cost per unit be calculated?**

By separating costs that vary with each unit — materials and direct labour — from the fixed cost of the plant. A blended rate hides which work is profitable; the separated version shows whether a price covers marginal cost and contributes to fixed cost. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**When does a second shift pay for itself?**

When the contribution from the extra volume exceeds the added labour, supervision and premium costs. Because the plant’s fixed cost is already paid, the answer is often yes at a lower volume than owners expect, but it has to be modelled on real figures.

**Do I need a CFO or a controller?**

If the month does not yet close reliably, a controller first. CFO analysis built on an unreliable close produces confident answers that are wrong.

**Is there an EverStone office in Winkler?**

No. EverStone works online. Operational data, cost reports and schedules travel as files, so the analysis does not depend on being in the same town.

**Do you work with businesses outside Winkler itself?**

Yes. Manufacturers and growing firms in Morden, the RM of Stanley, Altona and Plum Coulee are served on the same footing, by email, video and a secure upload link, at identical fixed fees.

### Who this is for, and who it is not

This serves a Winkler manufacturer or growing firm that needs monthly unit economics and a cash forecast to act on, short of hiring a full-time finance lead. A company needing only its compliance filed should take [the corporate tax engagement](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-services), which costs less. ## Remote CFO support

The firm operates virtually and serves Winkler online. **There is no Winkler office and no staff there.** Work runs by video call and secure document exchange. Product and customer margins are drawn from the books that produce the year-end, so the two agree.

Strategic decisions run on figures that arrive in time to use, which is [the monthly pack behind those decisions](https://www.everstonecpa.com/management-reporting).

If the month does not yet close reliably, a fractional controller instead is the cheaper place to begin.
