# Fractional CFO support for *Winnipeg* carriers and manufacturers

Transportation and manufacturing share a financial signature: high fixed cost, thin margins per unit, and profitability that depends entirely on volume flowing through capacity that has already been paid for. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Winnipeg businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-winnipeg).

Getting the unit economics right is therefore most of the job. The general service is on the [fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo) page.

**Quick answer:** A fractional CFO is senior financial leadership engaged part-time. For a Winnipeg carrier or manufacturer the work is a defensible cost per mile or per unit, profitability by lane, customer or product, and understanding how capacity utilization drives the result. Fractional CFO work starts at $2,750 a month.

Winnipeg CFO work starts from $2,750 a month. The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

A fractional CFO for a Winnipeg carrier or manufacturer works remotely by the month; the [fractional controller](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fractional-controller-services) half closes the month and prices the lane or the unit before the CFO half decides anything about it.

A company-wide margin hides which lane, customer or unit is carrying it.

## Cost per mile, cost per unit

Everything downstream depends on this figure. For a carrier, separate distance costs — fuel, tires, wear-related maintenance — from time costs such as insurance, licensing, financing and driver pay that is not purely by mile. For a manufacturer, separate materials and direct labour from the plant’s fixed cost.

One blended rate hides which work is profitable. Separating costs shows whether a rate covers the marginal cost of a load and contributes to fixed cost, and which to optimize for at a given moment.

## Profitability by lane, customer and product

Carriers rarely know which lanes make money. A well-paid outbound leg paired with a poor return leg can lose money overall, and only round-trip analysis shows it. Deadhead miles, waiting time and seasonal imbalance all count.

Manufacturers face the same issue by product and customer. A long tail of low-volume items eats changeover time, inventory space and attention far beyond its contribution, because its cost has never been attributed. Usually a few relationships do most of the damage, and they are fixable once found.

## Capacity utilization and overhead absorption

A plant at sixty percent capacity carries the same rent, core staffing and depreciation as one at ninety, over far fewer units. Unit cost depends heavily on volume, so comparing years without adjusting for volume gives wrong conclusions.

A fleet is the same: a unit idle for want of a driver still carries full cost. Knowing how costs behave at different volumes tells you whether a lower-priced order is worth taking to fill capacity, and where that stops.

## Fuel exposure and surcharge mechanics

Fuel is a large, volatile cost, and protection against it is often incomplete. A lagged index surcharge recovers most of an increase eventually, but the carrier absorbs the timing gap. Contracts with no surcharge leave it all uncovered.

So measure how much of a fuel movement is actually recovered, by customer. Where recovery is poor, renegotiate, reprice or accept the exposure knowingly — all better than finding at year end that margin went to something you thought was covered.

## Labour cost and the price of turnover

Drivers and skilled production staff are scarce and costly to replace, yet turnover cost is rarely measured. Recruitment, training, ramp-up productivity and, in transport, idle units with empty seats all count.

That figure lets retention spending be judged, not argued. A pay or scheduling change that cuts turnover a few points often costs less than the turnover it prevents. The [year-end statements in Winnipeg](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-winnipeg) page covers reporting.

## When this is not the right investment

All of the above needs operational data: miles and hours by unit, production volumes, time recorded against jobs or runs. Where that does not exist, building it is the first project, because analysis built on estimated inputs produces confident conclusions that are unreliable.

Usually there is a trigger: unexplained margin decline, a big equipment or capacity decision, a customer grown large, or growth straining cash. Otherwise accurate records and a timely year end deliver more. See [trucking and logistics accounting](https://www.everstonecpa.com/trucking-logistics-accounting).

## How the engagement works

Winnipeg engagements run remotely, with scope, cadence and cost agreed in writing beforehand.

This suits incorporated carriers and owner-operator fleets, warehousing and distribution businesses, food and industrial manufacturers and machine shops. Manitoba corporate income tax is collected federally; see the [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) page for current rates and thresholds.

## What a CFO engagement covers

What a CFO engagement covers
Advisory work, separate from compliance filing — for a business operating in Winnipeg, Manitoba

| Area | What it means in practice |

| Cash flow | A forward view of what is coming in and going out, not last quarter’s history |

| Forecasting | A model you can test decisions against before you make them |

| Pricing and margin | Which work earns money and which quietly does not |

| Owner compensation | How salary and dividends interact with the corporate return |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST plus 7% Manitoba retail sales tax — two registrations, two returns |

## Remote CFO support

We serve Winnipeg remotely. **There is no Winnipeg office and no staff based there.** Work runs by video, phone and secure upload, and lane and product margins come from the same books as the year end.

The year end this all feeds into is [corporate returns for Winnipeg owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-winnipeg).

Strategic decisions run on figures that arrive in time to use, which is [the monthly pack behind those decisions](https://www.everstonecpa.com/management-reporting).

If the month does not yet close reliably, a fractional controller instead is the cheaper place to begin.

Common questions

## Winnipeg transport and manufacturing CFO questions

**How should cost per mile be calculated?**

Separate distance costs (fuel, tires, wear-related maintenance) from time costs (insurance, licensing, financing, time-based driver pay). A blended rate hides which work is profitable; the split shows whether a rate covers marginal cost and contributes to fixed cost. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Why analyze lanes round-trip rather than per load?**

A well-paid outbound leg paired with a poor return leg can lose money overall, invisible load by load. Deadhead miles, waiting time and seasonal imbalance all count, and usually a few pairings do most of the damage.

**Does my fuel surcharge actually cover fuel increases?**

Often only partly. A lagged index surcharge recovers most of a movement eventually, but the carrier absorbs the timing gap, and contracts without one leave it uncovered. Measure actual recovery by customer.

**Is EverStone based in Winnipeg?**

No. EverStone works online. Operational data, cost reports and schedules travel as files, so the analysis does not depend on being in the same city.

**Do you work with businesses outside Winnipeg itself?**

Yes. Carriers and plants in Steinbach, Selkirk and the wider Capital Region are served on the same footing as those in Winnipeg, over video, phone, email and a secure upload link, at identical fixed fees.

This serves a Winnipeg carrier or manufacturer that needs monthly unit economics to act on, short of hiring a full-time finance lead.
