# Compilation engagement reports *(CSRS 4200)*

When a lender or stakeholder wants CPA-compiled statements with a formal report attached, that’s a compilation engagement.

We perform them to the current standard, so the statements carry the weight your reader expects. EverStone CPA performs compilation engagements remotely for corporations across BC and in Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba online.

**Quick answer:** A compilation engagement under CSRS 4200 produces financial statements a CPA assembles from information the client supplies, with no audit or review assurance attached. It is the standard year-end report for owner-managed Canadian corporations and is what most lenders accept. EverStone prepares CSRS 4200 compilations alongside the [T2 corporate return](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html).

A compilation assembles statements; it does not assure them.

A compilation engagement is a specific CPA service: we compile financial information you provide into [financial statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) and attach a compilation engagement report. It’s the most common engagement for small private corporations that need something more formal than internally-prepared statements but don’t require the cost of a review or audit. Since December 2021, compilations follow the CSRS 4200 standard, which replaced the old “Notice to Reader” and added clearer requirements — including a note describing the basis of accounting used. We handle the whole engagement to that standard.

## What a compilation engagement includes

- Compiled financial statements from the information you provide
- A compilation engagement report, prepared under CSRS 4200
- A note describing the basis of accounting used to prepare the statements
- Statements suitable for lenders, shareholders and other stakeholders
- Coordination with your T2 corporate tax return
- Clear explanation of what the engagement does — and doesn’t — provide

Understanding the engagement

## What a compilation is — and what it isn’t

A compilation is the right level of engagement for many small corporations, but it’s important to understand what it provides so you and your reader have the right expectations.

### It compiles, it doesn’t assure

In a compilation, we assemble your financial information into statements — we don’t audit or review it, and the report doesn’t express an opinion or provide assurance. It’s the right, cost-effective choice when the reader doesn’t require assurance.

### CSRS 4200 replaced “Notice to Reader”

Effective for periods ending on or after December 14, 2021, the CSRS 4200 standard replaced the old Notice to Reader engagement. The compilation report is more informative and requires disclosure of the basis of accounting used to prepare the statements.

If your lender still asks for a “Notice to Reader,” a CSRS 4200 compilation is its modern equivalent.

### Who needs one

Lenders, landlords, bonding companies and shareholders often ask for CPA-compiled statements. A compilation gives them statements prepared and reported on by a Chartered Professional Accountant, without the cost of a review or audit.

### The basis of accounting matters

Under CSRS 4200, the statements must disclose the basis of accounting used to prepare them. We determine and clearly describe the appropriate basis for your business, so the statements are transparent about how they were built.

### When you need more

If your reader specifically requires assurance — a lender covenant, a large financing, certain shareholder situations — a compilation isn’t enough, and a review or audit engagement is needed. We’ll tell you honestly which engagement your situation calls for.

How it works

## Working with EverStone, start to finish

1

### We scope the engagement

We confirm what your reader actually requires and whether a compilation is the right level, then quote a fixed fee before any work begins.

2

### We compile the statements

We compile your financial information into statements under CSRS 4200, determine the appropriate basis of accounting, and prepare the compilation engagement report.

3

### We deliver and explain

You get statements with the report attached, ready for your lender or stakeholder — and a clear explanation of what the engagement provides.

A compilation produces formal [year-end financial statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) and works hand in hand with your [corporate tax return](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-services) and [bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accounting-services).

Questions

## Compilation engagement questions

**What is a compilation engagement?**

A compilation engagement is one where we compile the financial information you provide into financial statements and attach a compilation engagement report. It doesn’t provide assurance — we don’t audit or review the information — which makes it the cost-effective choice when your reader doesn’t require assurance. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Is this the same as a “Notice to Reader”?**

Effective for periods ending on or after December 14, 2021, the CSRS 4200 compilation standard replaced the old Notice to Reader engagement. The new report is more informative and requires disclosing the basis of accounting used. If a lender asks for a Notice to Reader, a CSRS 4200 compilation is the current equivalent.

**How much does a compilation cost?**

Compilation pricing depends on the size and complexity of your business and the state of your records. We provide a fixed quote after we review your enquiry, so you know the price before any work starts.

**Do I need a compilation, a review, or an audit?**

Which engagement you need depends on what your reader requires. Many small corporations only need a compilation. If a lender or shareholder specifically requires assurance, a review or audit may be necessary. We’ll tell you honestly which engagement fits your situation rather than upselling.

**Can you also file my corporate taxes?**

Yes. A compilation coordinates naturally with your T2 corporate return and bookkeeping, and having the same CPA handle both keeps everything consistent and avoids duplicated work.

**Will my bank accept a compilation engagement report?**

Many lenders accept one for smaller credit facilities, but it is the lender’s call and larger or riskier lending often calls for a review or audit instead. Ask your bank what level of engagement it requires before the work is done, because upgrading afterwards means a different engagement rather than an add-on to the compilation.

**What does a compilation report say about accuracy?**

A compilation report says no assurance is provided. Under CSRS 4200 the CPA compiles financial information from what management supplies and discloses the basis of accounting used, without auditing or reviewing it. That is appropriate for many owner-managed corporations, but anyone relying on the statements, a lender, a buyer, a partner — needs to understand the limitation before they do.

**Fixed fees**Clear, fixed pricing. You approve the fee before any work begins. No surprise bills.

**One day**We reply to every enquiry within one business day, usually the same day.

**CPA-led**Every file is handled personally by a CPA, never passed to junior staff.

**No obligation**Sending an enquiry is free, with zero pressure and no obligation.

## Where we work

The fee is the same wherever you are. That holds wherever the business is. Some of the places we work: [Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford) · [Chilliwack](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-chilliwack) · [Langley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-langley) · [Mission](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-mission) · [Fraser Valley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-fraser-valley) · [Vancouver](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-vancouver).

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an owner whose lender, franchisor or investor has asked for financial statements. It does not fit a reader who needs assurance: a compilation offers none, and it says so on its face. If the request was for [a review or an audit](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-vs-review-engagement), confirm which before commissioning anything — the wrong engagement gets paid for twice.
