# Corporate tax accountant for *Airdrie* corporations

An Alberta corporation files twice — a federal T2 with the CRA and a provincial AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both from one closed year end for incorporated Airdrie businesses, fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Airdrie small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-airdrie).

**Quick answer:** An Airdrie corporation files the federal T2 and a separate Alberta AT1. Active business income eligible for the small business deduction is taxed at 11% combined on a $500,000 limit, and income above it at 23%. EverStone prepares both returns together, remotely. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Airdrie corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. The year end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, the owner’s T4 or T5 slips and the instalments for the year ahead.

## Two corporate returns, prepared as one job

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate income tax on the T2. Alberta does not. A corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 and, separately, the AT1 — two filings with their own accounts, their own correspondence and their own ways to fall behind. Alberta also moved to online mail through TRACS as the default for corporate income tax correspondence as of 1 April 2026, so a provincial notice may never arrive on paper at all.

The Airdrie owners most likely to miss the AT1 are the ones who incorporated somewhere else first, or who used an accountant who mainly files in another province. Nothing about completing the federal return prompts the provincial one. We prepare both from the same trial balance and file them together, so the figures agree and nothing is left for a provincial letter to discover two years later.

## What the rates mean for an Airdrie corporation

On active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html), the combined rate is 11%: 9% federal plus 2% Alberta. The $500,000 business limit is shared across an associated group, which matters more often than owners expect — two companies controlled by the same family, one holding the shop and one running the crews, share the one limit. Above the limit, or on income that does not qualify, the combined rate is 23%, built on Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in the country.

That 12-point step is narrower here than in most provinces, which changes how much effort is worth spending to protect the limit. The decision to leave profit inside an Airdrie corporation, or to pay it out as salary or dividends, should start from the actual spread rather than a rule of thumb imported from elsewhere. The [Airdrie personal tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-airdrie) covers the owner side of that decision.

## Equipment, vehicles and capital cost allowance

Airdrie’s corporations skew towards trades, transport, manufacturing and the suppliers behind them, which means real equipment on the balance sheet: trucks and trailers, excavators and skid steers, shop tools, racking and production lines. None of that is expensed in the year it is bought. It is added to a [CCA class](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada), and the class, the purchase date relative to year end and any trade-in all change the claim. A unit sold for more than the undepreciated balance of its class brings recapture back into income, which is how a fleet refresh after a good year produces a tax bill in the same year it spends the cash.

The useful habit is to talk about large purchases before the order is signed, not after. Timing a purchase inside or outside a fiscal year, choosing between lease and purchase, and deciding which vehicle is genuinely a business asset are all corporate tax questions that are only answerable in advance.

## Consulting corporations with one client

Many Airdrie residents work for Calgary organizations, and a share of them do it through their own corporation — engineering, project management, IT, safety and technical consulting. The structure is legitimate, but it carries a specific risk. If the CRA concludes the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, a higher federal rate applies and most ordinary deductions are disallowed. The test turns on the same control, tools, subcontracting and risk factors used to separate employees from contractors. A corporation with one client, a desk inside that client’s office and no business risk of its own is the profile that draws attention, and it is worth reviewing before the return is filed.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once an Airdrie corporation owes enough tax to be required to pay [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), it pays two streams: federal instalments to the CRA and provincial instalments to Alberta. Interest runs on each independently. The base is built from prior-year figures, so a contractor coming off a strong building season keeps paying at that level into a slower one unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the calculation methods.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

Construction and landscaping in the Calgary region are seasonal, and a December year end lands a trades corporation’s close in its quietest month only by accident. A year end chosen against how the business actually earns gives cleaner work-in-progress and receivables figures, leaves time to decide on a bonus before the deduction deadline passes, and keeps the filing deadline away from personal tax season. It is chosen once and changed only with the CRA’s permission, so it is worth choosing well. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## The registry side, which is not your tax return

An Alberta corporation also files an annual return with the Alberta Corporate Registry through an authorized registry agent, which keeps it in good standing. It is a separate filing from the T2 and the AT1, and confusing the three is common. We track the tax returns and remind you of the registry filing; separately, the City of Airdrie requires a business licence for businesses carried on in the city, renewed each December, which is another obligation that has nothing to do with the CRA.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is fully virtual. There is no Airdrie office, no branch and no local staff, and there are no office visits. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same rules wherever the preparer sits; what matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them.

Year-end planning works only against a number set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in the last month of the year.

Common questions

## Airdrie corporate tax questions

**Does an Airdrie corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Airdrie?**

The Alberta rates apply: 11% combined on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus 8% Alberta), on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group.

**What does a corporate tax return cost in Airdrie?**

Corporate returns are quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450 to $650 a month. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you have an Airdrie office?**

No. EverStone works fully online, with no office visits. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and questions are answered by email.

**My corporation has one main client in Calgary. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker classification.

**Do you work with corporations outside Airdrie itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Crossfield, Balzac, Carstairs, Irricana and across Rocky View County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Airdrie ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

This fits an Airdrie corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who replies by email, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by secure upload, e-signature and video, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.
