# Corporate tax accountant for *Cochrane* corporations

Alberta corporations file twice — once federally, once provincially. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Cochrane businesses, fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Cochrane small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-cochrane).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax. A Cochrane corporation therefore files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both returns from one year-end file, remotely. For a one-owner Cochrane corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Cochrane corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, CCA, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips and instalments, plus the Alberta AT1.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate income tax, so a single T2 carries both the federal and the provincial layer. Alberta does not. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA *and* the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns draw on the same trial balance, but they are separate filings with separate accounts, separate correspondence and separate ways to fall behind.

This matters in Cochrane more than the size of the town would suggest. A large share of the corporations here are small: a consultant, a designer, a developer or a tradesperson who incorporated a few years ago and files through software or a part-time preparer. The federal return is accepted, a confirmation number arrives, and nothing about that process mentions Alberta. An owner who has only ever seen one confirmation is usually missing the second filing rather than exempt from it, and the gap tends to surface as a provincial letter years later.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for a Cochrane corporation

Active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at a combined 11% in Alberta — 9% federal plus 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

For most Cochrane owner-managers, the useful question is not the rate itself but what to do with profit the business does not need to pay out. Income kept in the corporation is taxed at 11% until it is paid out as salary or dividends, at which point personal tax applies. Holding a reserve inside the company makes sense for a contractor saving for equipment or a consultant smoothing an uneven year. It makes less sense for an owner who needs the money personally anyway. We work that out on your figures, before the year end, rather than after the T2 has fixed it.

## The home-office corporation and personal services business risk

The Town of Cochrane points to a large home-based business community, including engineers, designers and programmers, and many of those owners contract through a corporation. That structure is sound, but it attracts a specific corporate tax risk. If the CRA concludes that the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, a higher federal rate applies, and almost every ordinary deduction is disallowed.

The test turns on the same control, tools, subcontracting and risk factors used to separate employees from contractors. A corporation with one client, set working hours, the client’s equipment and no independent business risk is the profile that draws attention. A home office in Cochrane does not change the answer on its own, but a second client, your own tools and real commercial risk do. It is worth reviewing before the return is filed, and our [PSB risk assessment](https://www.everstonecpa.com/psb-risk-assessment) is a quick first look.

## Equipment, vehicles and capital cost allowance

The other end of Cochrane’s business mix carries real assets. A trades corporation running trucks and tools across the town, Calgary and Rocky View County, or a retailer fitting out a downtown unit, claims those costs through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) by class rather than as a single expense. The timing of a purchase against the year end changes the first-year claim, and a trade-in or sale can bring recapture. Vehicles also raise the question of personal use, which affects both the CCA claim and any taxable benefit to the owner. Getting the asset register right each year is what makes the T2 and the AT1 agree with each other and with the books.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once a Cochrane corporation has tax payable above the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), it pays twice: one stream to the CRA for the federal balance and one to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration for the provincial one. Two payment streams means two ways to fall short, and interest runs independently on each. The instalment base is built from prior-year figures, so a corporation coming off a strong year keeps paying at that level into a weaker one unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the methods; the local point is that the provincial stream exists and is easy to overlook.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with permission, so it is worth choosing against how the business actually earns. A Cochrane contractor busiest through the building season gains little from a year end in the middle of it. A retailer with a strong holiday quarter may prefer to close after the returns and inventory count settle. Moving the year end to a quieter month gives cleaner figures, room to decide on a bonus before the deduction deadline, and a filing deadline that does not collide with personal tax season. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Cochrane office, no branch and no local staff. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same federal and Alberta rules wherever the preparer sits. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them, and that the same person is there when the next question comes up. If you also need the statements themselves for a bank, see [year-end financial statements in Cochrane](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-cochrane).

Year-end planning only works against a number set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in December.

Common questions

## Cochrane corporate tax questions

**Does a Cochrane corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Cochrane?**

Combined rates are 11% on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit.

**Do you have a Cochrane office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Cochrane corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**I never filed an AT1. What now?**

The missing years are prepared and filed, oldest first, from the same figures used for the federal returns. It is far better to file before Alberta writes to you than after, and the T2s already filed usually make it a contained piece of work.

**My home-based corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. Working from home does not settle the question either way.

**Do you work with corporations outside Cochrane itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Bragg Creek, Bearspaw and elsewhere in Rocky View County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Cochrane ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Cochrane corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise — a home-based consultancy, a downtown business, a contractor or a family holding company. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Cochrane corporation is onboarded the same way as any other Alberta file, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue, including whether the AT1 has ever been filed. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
