# Corporate tax accountant for *Edmonton* corporations

Edmonton’s incorporated base is capital-heavy — fabrication, industrial services, transport and equipment. That puts the depreciation schedule, not the rate table, at the centre of the return. EverStone prepares the T2 and Alberta AT1 remotely for [Edmonton small businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton).

**Quick answer:** For a capital-intensive Edmonton corporation the T2 is largely decided by the [capital cost allowance](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/sole-proprietorships-partnerships/report-business-income-expenses/claiming-capital-cost-allowance.html) schedule and the treatment of equipment additions and disposals. EverStone prepares the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1 from one year-end file, remotely, at a fixed fee. For a one-person trades corporation, adding monthly books and payroll brings the all-in cost, year-end T2 included, to about $500–$700 a month.

Corporate tax planning for an Edmonton company happens before the year-end closes; the return only records it.

The trade-in is where an ordinary year produces a tax bill.

## Where a capital-heavy return is actually decided

For Edmonton fabrication, industrial service, transport or equipment corporations, taxable income turns on the capital asset schedule more than revenue. Capitalizing, class choice, trade-ins and recapture or terminal loss can swing a season’s margin. That schedule is the part of the file a corporate tax accountant Edmonton corporations hire should review against invoices rather than reconstruct from a summary.

The classes carry very different rates. General equipment and furniture sit in Class 8 at 20% declining balance, general-purpose vehicles and equipment in Class 10 at 30%, computer equipment in Class 50 at 55%, and certain small tools in Class 12 at 100%. [Capital cost allowance classes](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) sets out the framework.

## Recapture, terminal losses and the trade-in nobody flagged

Selling depreciable property can bite. Proceeds above the class’s undepreciated balance are recaptured into income; an emptied class with a balance left gives a terminal loss. Neither shows in the bank account, so equipment-heavy corporations get surprise bills in ordinary years. Trade-ins are the usual cause: the old unit leaves at its trade-in value while the invoice shows only net cash.

## The AT1 restates the same figures provincially

Alberta runs its own corporate tax, so an Edmonton corporation files a T2 with the CRA and an AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration, from the same year end and asset schedule. An adjustment made in one but not the other leaves returns that disagree. Alberta’s rates are 2% on income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) and 8% on general income, for combined rates of 11% and 23% on a $500,000 business limit.

In practice, corporation tax Edmonton companies pay comes from two returns, the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1, both worked from one closed year end.

## Associated corporations share one business limit

Around Edmonton, Nisku and Leduc, an operating company often rents equipment or a yard from a sister corporation. Associated corporations share one $500,000 business limit, not two. If the allocation isn’t filed deliberately, the CRA can assign it, and income taxed at 11% becomes 23%. [Associated corporations and the small business deduction](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/associated-corporations-small-business-deduction) explains the rules.

## Paying the owner with no provincial payroll tax

Alberta has no employer health tax, so workers’ compensation is the only provincial payroll cost, one less factor than in several other provinces. Salary creates RRSP room and Canada Pension Plan contributions; dividends avoid payroll remittances; timing follows when you need cash. See [Salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026).

## Loss years in a cyclical base

Edmonton’s industrial economy is cyclical. A non-capital loss can be carried back three years to recover tax, or forward; the carryback must be requested and competes with saving the loss for a higher-taxed year. In a loss year, the capital cost allowance claim is optional, and claiming less preserves the balance. These choices are made at filing.

## A remote engagement, start to finish

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm with no Edmonton location or local staff. Records arrive electronically, the asset schedule is checked against invoices, and both returns are e-signed. Whoever asks about the old excavator signs the return, so nothing gets lost between bookkeeper and preparer.

In a cyclical economy the year-end target has to be set early and revised, which is the job of [a rolling forecast](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting), not a December estimate.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

Right for an Edmonton corporation with real equipment wanting the T2, AT1 and asset schedule with one CPA at an agreed price. Wrong for cheapest-quote shoppers or anyone needing weekly site visits. Remote, on [the same published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

An Alberta corporation starts in three stages.

- **A no-cost first call.** Thirty minutes on the fleet, the filings to date and any overdue AT1 or T2. You receive a fixed written fee and owe nothing.

- **Federal and Alberta access.** Once [CRA authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) is filed, notices and balances are read directly. If a [previous accountant](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) holds the records, we request them the same week.

- **Current and scheduled.** Books are closed, back years are cleared oldest first, and upcoming [T2 and instalment due dates](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t2-deadline) are diarised.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask a quick question](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) before deciding.

Common questions

## Edmonton corporate tax questions

**Why did selling equipment increase my tax bill?**

Recapture. If proceeds exceed the undepreciated balance left in that capital cost allowance class, the excess is added to income, though the cash only replaced an asset. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Do two of my corporations each get a $500,000 limit?**

No. Associated corporations share one $500,000 business limit and must allocate it between them. An operating company and a separate equipment-holding company are commonly associated, so the limit is divided rather than doubled.

**Does Edmonton have an employer health tax?**

Alberta does not levy an employer health tax. Workers’ compensation coverage is effectively the only provincial payroll charge, which is one fewer variable in the salary-versus-dividend decision than owners face in several other provinces.

**Do I have to claim capital cost allowance every year?**

No. The claim is discretionary up to the maximum. In a loss year it often makes sense to claim less, preserving the undepreciated balance for a year when the deduction actually reduces tax rather than deepening a loss.

**Are you located in Edmonton?**

No. EverStone works online, and serves Edmonton corporations remotely. There is no Edmonton office to visit and none is needed — documents, review and signature all happen electronically.

**What happens to a loss my corporation reports?**

A non-capital loss can be carried back to the three preceding tax years, or forward. The carryback must be requested at filing; it isn’t automatic.

**Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton itself?**

Yes. St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Nisku are served on the same basis as Edmonton: a video or phone call, email, a secure upload link and the same fixed fees.
