# Corporate tax accountant for *Guelph* corporations

Ontario collects its corporate income tax through the federal return, so a Guelph company files one T2 carrying both layers — then a separate registry return on its own deadline. EverStone prepares both remotely. See the [Ontario tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/ontario-tax-facts) or the [Guelph practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-guelph).

**Quick answer:** A Guelph corporation reports Ontario tax inside the same T2 it files federally, at combined rates of 11.2% and 26.5% (the small-business rate fell from 12.2% on 1 July 2026). It then files a separate annual return with the Ontario Business Registry. EverStone prepares the corporate return remotely at a fixed fee. For a one-owner Guelph company, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together generally come to $450–$650 a month.

The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule for equipment and vehicles, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

## One return, two layers of tax

Ontario has the CRA collect its corporate income tax, so a Guelph corporation files a single T2 that carries both the federal and provincial charge. Combined, active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at 11.2% on a $500,000 business limit. That is 9% federal plus Ontario’s 2.2% lower rate for days after 30 June 2026 (12.2% combined before that date; a straddling year is prorated by days).

General income is taxed at 26.5%, being 15% federal plus Ontario’s 11.5% general rate. The gap between the two bands is now 15.3 points, wider than it was before the July 2026 cut, so more of the value sits in keeping qualifying income inside the business limit. For a Guelph manufacturer or contractor whose profit swings with a large order or a busy season, that limit is the line to plan against, and it is shared with any associated company.

## Equipment, CCA and the timing of a purchase

Guelph has a large manufacturing base, and a lot of the corporate tax planning for those companies turns on equipment. A CNC machine, a press, a forklift or a delivery truck is not deducted in the year it is bought; it is added to a [capital cost allowance class](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) and written off at that class’s rate. When the asset becomes available for use decides which year receives the first claim, so a machine delivered in the last week of the fiscal year and one delivered in the first week of the next produce very different returns.

CCA is also discretionary. In a year when the small business deduction already shelters all the profit, claiming the maximum may simply carry the value forward at a low rate; in a year when profit pushes past the business limit, the same claim is worth considerably more. Reading the two together, before the year closes, is the useful part. The [half-year rule](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/half-year-rule-cca-canada) note explains how the first-year claim is limited.

## Associated companies share one business limit

It is common in and around Guelph for a family to own more than one corporation: an operating company and a holding company, a farm corporation alongside a trucking or custom-work company, a manufacturing company with a separate company that owns the building. Where corporations are associated — through common control, or through related people controlling each — they must share one $500,000 business limit between them, allocated on Schedule 23. Get the allocation wrong and the CRA reassesses the company that over-claimed.

The rules reach further than most owners expect, because control can be attributed between spouses and to children, and a minority holding combined with a family member’s holding can be enough. Mapping the group once, and re-checking it whenever shares change hands, is cheaper than discovering association in a review. The [associated corporations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/associated-corporations-small-business-deduction) guide sets out the tests.

## Research and development work

The City of Guelph names agri-innovation and life sciences among its industry clusters, and many Guelph companies do development work: a food business reformulating a product, an equipment maker building a prototype, a software company solving a problem nobody has documented. Where work tackles genuine technological uncertainty, scientific research and experimental development incentives can produce refundable credits for a Canadian-controlled private corporation, claimed with the T2.

The deciding factor is rarely the science. It is whether the company recorded, while the work was happening, what was attempted, why the outcome was uncertain, and who spent how many hours on it. A claim assembled from memory after the year-end is weaker and more expensive to prepare. If development is a regular part of the business, the time tracking belongs in the bookkeeping from the start.

## Employer health tax: the rate is chosen before the exemption

Ontario levies an employer health tax on remuneration. The rate is selected from the payroll bands using total Ontario remuneration *before* the exemption is deducted; only then is the $1,000,000 exemption subtracted from the taxable base. No exemption is available where the employer or its associated group has more than $5,000,000 of annual Ontario payroll, and associated employers must file an allocation agreement to share the single exemption. For a Guelph manufacturer adding a shift, this is a cost to model before the hiring, not after.

## The registry annual return is a separate filing

An Ontario corporation’s annual return is filed through the Ontario Business Registry within six months of fiscal year end. It is not part of the T2, it is not filed by the CRA, and missing it does not produce a tax assessment, which is precisely why it gets forgotten. It keeps the company in good standing and its registered information current, and the consequences of neglect stay administrative until a lender, a purchaser or a lawyer asks for a certificate of status.

## Dividends to family shareholders

Family ownership is common among Guelph and Wellington County companies, often with a spouse or adult children holding shares. Paying dividends to those shareholders is not the planning tool it was before the tax on split income was extended. Unless the recipient meets one of the excluded-share, labour-contribution or age-based exceptions, the dividend can be taxed at the top marginal rate regardless of the recipient’s other income. The analysis turns on facts — hours actually worked, ownership percentages, the nature of the business — and belongs before the dividend is declared. [Tax on split income](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/tosi-tax-on-split-income-canada) sets out the exceptions.

## Instalments once the corporation is profitable

A Guelph corporation past its first profitable year generally moves onto [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), paying its combined federal and Ontario tax through the year rather than at filing. The base is built from prior-year figures, so a company coming off a strong year keeps paying at that level into a weaker one unless the estimate is revised, and a fast-growing company pays instalments sized to a smaller year and meets a large balance with interest at filing. The balance is generally due before the return itself. [Corporate tax instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) covers the options.

## Working with a CPA who is not in Guelph

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Guelph office, no branch and no local staff. Ontario corporate tax is reported inside the federal return under rules that are identical wherever the preparer sits, and the return is transmitted electronically. The engagement runs entirely remotely: secure document exchange, video calls booked around your schedule, and e-signature. What you give up is the ability to drop paperwork at a reception desk. What you get is the same CPA on the file from the first question to the filed return.

With a rate change mid-year, the year-end target matters more, and [a budget built from the operations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) fixes it before the year closes.

Common questions

## Guelph corporate tax questions

**What is the corporate tax rate for a Guelph company?**

Combined rates are 11.2% on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2.2% Ontario) for days after 30 June 2026 (12.2% before that date; a straddling year is prorated by days) and 26.5% on general income (15% federal plus 11.5% Ontario), on a $500,000 business limit. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Does Ontario have a separate corporate tax return?**

No. The CRA collects Ontario corporate income tax through the same T2, so there is one corporate income tax return. The separate Ontario filing is the annual return to the Ontario Business Registry, which is a corporate-law obligation rather than a tax return.

**When should my company buy new equipment?**

When the business needs it, but the date it becomes available for use decides which year gets the first capital cost allowance claim. A purchase close to the year-end is worth modelling first, especially in a year when profit is near the $500,000 business limit and the deduction is worth more.

**I own two companies. Do they share the business limit?**

If they are associated, yes: one $500,000 limit is allocated between them on Schedule 23. Association can arise through common control or through related people, including spouses and children, so a group that looks separate on paper may not be for tax purposes.

**Do you have a Guelph office?**

No. EverStone serves Guelph corporations entirely remotely. Documents are exchanged securely online, returns are e-signed, and no office visit is required at any stage.

**Can our company claim research and development credits?**

Possibly, where the work tackles genuine technological uncertainty rather than applying known methods. Refundable credits are available to Canadian-controlled private corporations, and the claim depends on records made during the project, not reconstructed after it.

**What does a corporate tax return cost in Guelph?**

Guelph businesses pay the same published fees as everyone else. Standalone T2 work is priced after we review your enquiry, once the books are seen. For a one-owner company, bookkeeping, payroll and a year-end return with statements usually run $450 to $650 a month combined. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Guelph itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Fergus, Elora, Puslinch and the rest of Wellington County are handled like Guelph ones, by video, phone, email and a secure upload link, on the same fixed fees.
