# Corporate tax accountant for *Kingston* corporations

Ontario collects its corporate income tax through the federal return, so a Kingston company files one T2 carrying both layers — then a separate annual return with the Ontario Business Registry on its own deadline. EverStone prepares both remotely. See the [Ontario tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/ontario-tax-facts) or the [Kingston practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-kingston).

**Quick answer:** A Kingston corporation reports Ontario tax inside the same T2 it files federally, at combined rates of 11.2% and 26.5% (the small-business rate fell from 12.2% on 1 July 2026). It then files a separate annual return with the Ontario Business Registry. EverStone prepares the corporate return remotely at a fixed fee. For a one-owner Kingston company, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements generally come to $450–$650 a month.

The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

## One return, two layers of tax

Ontario has the CRA collect its corporate income tax, so a Kingston corporation files a single T2 that carries both the federal and the provincial charge. Combined, active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at 11.2% on a $500,000 business limit. That is 9% federal plus Ontario’s 2.2% lower rate for days after 30 June 2026 (12.2% combined before that date; a taxation year that straddles 1 July 2026 is prorated by days).

Income above the business limit, and income that does not qualify, is taxed at 26.5%: 15% federal plus Ontario’s 11.5% general rate. The July 2026 cut widened the gap between the two bands, so more of the value now sits in keeping active income inside the $500,000 limit. For most owner-managed Kingston companies the limit is not the constraint. What matters more is how much profit is left in the company, and how and when it is paid out to the owner.

## What a Kingston corporation’s T2 tends to involve

Kingston’s corporations are mostly small and owner-run, and their returns reflect the local economy. A contractor or trades company working on homes, commercial space or institutional buildings brings vehicles, tools and equipment, and therefore a real [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#cca) schedule, plus subcontractor payments reported on T5018 slips. A small manufacturer or food processor — sustainable manufacturing and food processing are among the sectors the city’s economic development office has prioritized — brings inventory, cost of goods sold and larger equipment purchases. A restaurant brings leasehold improvements and kitchen equipment. A consultant selling to the university or the hospitals brings very little equipment but often a single large client.

Each shape raises different questions at year-end, and they are not interchangeable. The CCA class an asset falls into decides how quickly it is written off. Inventory has to be counted and valued at the year-end date rather than estimated. And a one-client consulting company needs to keep an eye on the personal services business rules, which can deny the small business deduction where an incorporated individual is, in substance, working like an employee of that client.

## HST instead of two sales taxes

Ontario harmonized its provincial sales tax with the GST, so a single 13% HST covers both and is administered federally. The corporate consequence is cleaner than it looks: one registration, one return, and the provincial component recoverable as an [input tax credit](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) in the same way as the federal component. No provincial sales tax ends up buried in the cost of a truck or a piece of shop equipment. The exception that matters in Kingston is health care: many health services are exempt supplies, and a clinic making exempt supplies cannot claim input tax credits on the costs that relate to them, so for that business the tax paid on purchases is a real cost on the income statement. [Input tax credits](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/input-tax-credits-itc-canada-guide) covers what is recoverable and the records the CRA expects.

## Employer health tax: the rate is chosen before the exemption

Ontario levies an employer health tax on remuneration. The rate is selected from graduated payroll bands using total Ontario remuneration *before* the exemption is deducted; only then is the $1,000,000 exemption subtracted from the taxable base. No exemption is available where the employer or its associated group has more than $5,000,000 of annual Ontario payroll, and associated employers must file an allocation agreement to share one exemption. Most Kingston owner-managed companies sit below the exemption, but a growing contractor or a group of related restaurants should model it before adding staff, not after.

## The registry annual return is a separate filing

An Ontario corporation’s annual return is filed through the Ontario Business Registry within six months of fiscal year-end. It is not part of the T2, the CRA does not file it, and missing it does not produce a tax assessment, which is exactly why it gets forgotten. It keeps the company in good standing and its registered information current. The consequences of neglect stay administrative until a lender, a purchaser or a lawyer asks for proof of status. We diarize it against your year-end alongside the T2 and the balance due.

## Dividends, family shareholders and the owner’s pay

Many small Kingston corporations have a spouse or adult child holding shares, often set up years ago. Paying dividends to those family members is not the planning tool it once was. Since the tax on split income was extended, a dividend to a family member who does not meet one of the exceptions — an excluded-share test, a labour-contribution test or an age-based rule — can be taxed at the top personal rate whatever their other income. The answer turns on facts like hours actually worked and the percentage owned, so the analysis belongs before the dividend is declared. [Tax on split income](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/tosi-tax-on-split-income-canada) sets out the exceptions, and [salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026) covers the owner’s own mix.

## Instalments once the corporation is profitable

A Kingston corporation past its first profitable year generally moves onto [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), paying its combined federal and Ontario tax through the year rather than at filing. The base is usually built from prior-year figures. A seasonal business — outdoor trades, tourism, a patio-heavy restaurant — feels this most, because the instalment dates do not move with the busy months. A company coming off a strong summer can carry a large balance owing into its quietest quarter. The balance is generally due before the return itself, so the cash question arrives ahead of the paperwork. [T2 deadlines and penalties](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/t2-deadline-penalties-canada) sets out the dates.

## Working with a CPA you do not meet in person

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Kingston office, no branch and no local staff. Ontario corporate tax is reported inside the federal return under rules that are the same wherever the preparer sits, and the return is transmitted electronically. The engagement runs entirely remotely: secure document exchange, video calls booked around your schedule, and e-signature. What you give up is the ability to drop a box of paper at a front desk. What you get is the same CPA on the file from the first question to the filed return.

With a rate change mid-year, the year-end target matters more, and [a budget built from the operations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) sets it before December.

None of this works on records that are behind, which is what [bookkeeping in Kingston](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-kingston) keeps current.

Common questions

## Kingston corporate tax questions

**What is the corporate tax rate for a Kingston company?**

Combined rates are 11.2% on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2.2% Ontario) for days after 30 June 2026 (12.2% before that date; a straddling year is prorated by days) and 26.5% on general income (15% federal plus 11.5% Ontario), on a $500,000 business limit. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Does Ontario have a separate corporate tax return?**

No. The CRA collects Ontario corporate income tax through the same T2, so there is one corporate income tax return. The separate Ontario filing is the annual return to the Ontario Business Registry, which is a corporate-law obligation rather than a tax return.

**When is the Ontario annual return due?**

Within six months of the corporation’s fiscal year-end, filed through the Ontario Business Registry. It keeps the corporation in good standing and its registered information current, and it is separate from the T2.

**My Kingston company is seasonal. Which fiscal year-end should it use?**

A new corporation can choose its first year-end, and for a seasonal business a date just after the busy season often makes the year-end count easier and the planning more useful. Changing an established year-end needs CRA approval, so it is worth getting right at incorporation.

**Do you have a Kingston office?**

No. EverStone serves Kingston corporations entirely remotely. Documents are exchanged securely online, returns are e-signed, and no office visit is required at any stage.

**Can my Kingston clinic claim HST input tax credits?**

Only on costs that relate to taxable supplies. Many health services are exempt, and the HST paid on costs that relate to exempt supplies is not recoverable, so it becomes part of the expense on the T2. A clinic that also sells taxable products or services has to apportion.

**What does a corporate tax return cost in Kingston?**

Kingston businesses pay the same published fees as everyone else. Standalone T2 work is priced after we review your enquiry, once the books are seen. For a one-owner company, bookkeeping, payroll and a year-end return with statements usually run $450 to $650 a month combined. [Published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with corporations outside Kingston itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Amherstview, Napanee, Gananoque and across Frontenac County are handled like Kingston ones, by video, phone, email and a secure upload link, on the same fixed fees.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

For a Kingston corporation that wants the T2, the Ontario layers and the registry return handled by one CPA at a fee fixed first — a contractor, a restaurant, a clinic, a small manufacturer or a consultant. Not for price-only shoppers, or anyone who needs a front desk to visit. The work is remote, on [published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).
