# Corporate tax accountant for *Lethbridge* corporations

Alberta corporations file twice — once federally, once provincially. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Lethbridge businesses, working remotely. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Lethbridge small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-lethbridge).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a Lethbridge corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both returns from one year-end file, remotely, for incorporated Alberta businesses. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Lethbridge corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, CCA, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips, instalments and the Alberta AT1.

Alberta administers its own corporate tax — so there are two returns.

## Two corporate returns, not one

In most provinces the CRA collects provincial corporate tax on the same T2, so one return and one confirmation number cover everything. Alberta is different. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA *and* the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns start from the same trial balance, but they are separate filings with separate accounts, separate correspondence and separate ways to fall behind.

It comes up most often with owners who incorporated somewhere else and then moved their operation to southern Alberta, and with family companies where a relative did the filing for years using software that produced only the federal return. The gap tends to surface as provincial correspondence long after the federal return was accepted. Preparing the two together, from one closed year-end, is the only arrangement that keeps the figures reconciled and the provincial account current.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for a Lethbridge corporation

Active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at a combined 11% in Alberta — 9% federal plus 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit that an associated group shares. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

The association rule matters more in Lethbridge than owners expect. Farm families and family businesses in the region often hold several corporations: an operating company, a land or equipment company, a corporation for a second line of work, sometimes one owned by a spouse or adult child. Where those corporations are associated, they share the single $500,000 limit, and the allocation between them is a decision made on each T2. Getting it wrong does not usually create a penalty, but it can leave small-business-rate room unused in one company while another pays the general rate.

## Equipment, buildings and the CCA schedule

A large share of Lethbridge corporations are capital-heavy: processors with lines and cold storage, fabricators with presses and welding bays, trucking firms with tractors and trailers, contractors with excavators and service vehicles. For all of them, the capital cost allowance schedule is one of the most consequential parts of the T2. Each asset goes into a class with its own rate, and the class, the date it became available for use and any trade-in all change the claim.

Three points recur. First, CCA is discretionary: a corporation does not have to claim the maximum, and in a year where income is already sheltered by the small business rate, holding some of the claim back for a higher-income year can be the better result. Second, trading in equipment can trigger recapture when the trade value exceeds what remains in the class, which surprises owners who replaced a unit at a good price. Third, a building, the land under it and the equipment inside it are separate assets with separate treatment, and a purchase agreement that lumps them together needs allocating before the return is filed. [CCA classes explained](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) sets out the mechanics.

## Inventory and the year-end count

Food processors, feed and seed suppliers, parts dealers and manufacturers all carry inventory, and inventory is where a corporate return most often goes quietly wrong. Closing inventory reduces cost of sales, so an overstated count overstates profit and an understated one understates it. A count taken weeks after year-end and rolled back without adjusting for shipments in between produces a number that nobody can defend. For a business with a harvest-season intake, a December count can also land at the least representative point of the year.

The fix is unglamorous: a count on or close to the year-end date, a costing method that is applied the same way each year, and a review of obsolete or damaged stock before the figure goes into the statements. It is also one of the strongest arguments for choosing a fiscal year-end that falls after the busy season rather than in it.

## Choosing a year-end that suits the work

A fiscal year-end is chosen once and changed only with permission, so it is worth choosing against how the business actually earns. A Lethbridge corporation whose revenue concentrates in summer and fall gains little from a December year-end: the close lands in the middle of shipping season, inventory is at its least representative, and the filing deadline collides with personal tax season. A quieter month gives a cleaner count, room to decide on bonuses before the deduction deadline passes, and a balance owing due at a point in the cash cycle the business can carry. [Choosing a fiscal year-end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once a corporation’s tax passes the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), it pays twice: one stream to the CRA for the federal balance, the other to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration for the provincial one. Interest accrues independently on each. Instalments are usually built from prior-year figures, so a corporation coming off a strong harvest or a record contract keeps paying at that level into a weaker year unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) covers the calculation methods; the part worth attention locally is simply that the provincial stream exists and is easy to overlook.

## Consulting and practice corporations

Lethbridge also has a sizeable group of professional and consulting corporations, from clinic owners to engineers, agronomists and researchers who contract through their own company. Where a corporation earns most of its income from one client in a relationship that looks like employment, the CRA can treat it as a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada): the small business deduction is denied, a higher rate applies and most ordinary deductions are disallowed. The test turns on control, tools, risk and whether there is a genuine business. It is worth reviewing before the return is filed, not after an assessment arrives.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Lethbridge office, no branch and no local staff. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same federal and Alberta rules wherever the preparer sits. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them, and the one who answers the provincial letter if it comes.

Year-end planning only works against a number you set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in the last month of the year.

Common questions

## Lethbridge corporate tax questions

**Does an Alberta corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Lethbridge?**

Combined rates are 11% on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit shared by associated corporations.

**Do you have a Lethbridge office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Lethbridge corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**Our family owns several corporations. Do they share the small business limit?**

If they are associated, yes. Associated corporations share one $500,000 business limit and allocate it between them each year. Ownership by spouses, children and holding companies can all create association, so the structure is worth mapping before the returns are prepared.

**Should my corporation claim the full CCA every year?**

Not necessarily. CCA is discretionary, and in a year where income is already taxed at the small business rate, holding part of the claim for a higher-income year can produce a better result. The decision belongs in year-end planning, not at the last minute.

**My corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker classification.

**Do you work with businesses outside Lethbridge itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Raymond, Taber and across Lethbridge County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Lethbridge ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Alberta corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers, and a year-end that does not arrive as a surprise. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by email, video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Lethbridge corporation is onboarded the same way as any other, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue, including whether every past AT1 is actually on file. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
