# Corporate tax accountant for *Maple Ridge* corporations

In an owner-managed Maple Ridge company the corporate return and the owner’s personal return are one decision taken twice. How money leaves the company sets both. EverStone prepares the T2 remotely for [Maple Ridge businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-maple-ridge).

**Quick answer:** For most owner-managed Maple Ridge corporations the T2 is shaped by how the owner is paid: the salary and dividend mix, the [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary) balance, and benefits such as a company vehicle. EverStone prepares the corporate return remotely at a fixed fee. If the company is a one-owner trade, the monthly figure for books, payroll and the year-end corporate return is typically $500–$700.

The repayment clock runs from the year end, not from the loan.

## The compensation decision sets the return

A one-owner Maple Ridge corporation — a trades company, small services firm or home-office consultancy — usually has one large discretionary number: what the owner takes out. Salary is deductible to the corporation and employment income to the owner. Dividends are not deductible and are taxed differently. The corporate return changes with a decision often made informally and justified afterwards. Making it deliberately, before year-end, is planning rather than reporting. [Salary versus dividends](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/salary-vs-dividends-2026) works through the comparison.

## What salary buys and what it costs

Salary creates RRSP room and Canada Pension Plan contributions, and earned income that supports personal borrowing. It also requires a payroll account, [source deductions](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll/remitting-source-deductions.html) remitted on schedule and T4 reporting, and brings in the BC [employer health tax](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/employer-health-tax) once BC remuneration passes the threshold. Dividends avoid that administration and the CPP cost, and the benefits with it. Neither is always right; it is a corporate tax question because taxable income moves with it.

## The shareholder account nobody reconciles

The most common defect in an owner-managed file is a shareholder loan account used as a dumping ground: personal card purchases, cash taken, a vehicle payment, a double reimbursement. Under subsection 15(2) of the [Income Tax Act](https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/I-3.3/), an owner’s loan must generally be repaid within one year after the end of the taxation year it arose in, or the balance is added to personal income. [Shareholder loans](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation) sets out the rule and the ways around it.

## The truck the company bought

A corporate vehicle used personally creates a taxable benefit, often costlier than owners expect. Owning the vehicle personally and having the corporation reimburse business kilometres at a per-kilometre rate is often simpler and cheaper for a work vehicle with real personal use. Either way, the evidence is a mileage log kept during the year. [Vehicle deductions](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/vehicle-mileage-deductions-canada-business) covers both routes and what to record.

## Paying a spouse who actually works

Paying a family member is legitimate where the work is real and the amount reasonable. It is also a frequently reviewed deduction, and the defence is documentary: a record of hours or duties, a payment that actually moved, and matching payroll reporting. Dividends to family shareholders are different: the tax on split income can apply the top marginal rate unless an exception is met. [Paying a spouse a salary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/paying-your-spouse-a-salary-canada) covers what has to be true.

## The home office and the corporation

A Maple Ridge owner cannot deduct part of the house in the corporation, which neither owns nor rents it. The options are reimbursing a calculated share of actual costs, or renting to the corporation and reporting the income personally, both set up on purpose. BC’s combined rates of 11% and 27% apply to what remains. [Home office through a corporation](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/home-office-deduction-corporation-canada) covers the options.

## How the engagement runs

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm with no Maple Ridge office. The work runs remotely: secure upload, a video call on the pay decision before year-end, e-signature and electronic filing. The CPA weighing salary against dividends prepares both the corporate and personal returns, so they are decided together.

The pay decision at year end needs a profit figure to aim at, and [a budget built from the operations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) supplies it long before December.

If [personal tax in Maple Ridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-maple-ridge) and [trades accounting in Maple Ridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant-maple-ridge) is the more pressing job, start there instead.

Businesses that also want [monthly books for Maple Ridge businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-maple-ridge) and [getting the Maple Ridge returns filed](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-maple-ridge) can have both quoted together.

## What happens when you get in touch

Three steps take a Maple Ridge owner from first call to a current file.

- **First call, no charge.** Half an hour on the company, how you are paid, and anything behind. A written fixed fee follows; you are not committed.

- **Authorized with the CRA.** [Representative access](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) means corporate and personal notices are seen directly. Leaving another accountant? [The transfer](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) is requested in the first week.

Common questions

## Maple Ridge corporate tax questions

**Should I pay myself salary or dividends?**

It depends on what you need the income to do. Salary creates RRSP room and CPP contributions and is deductible to the corporation; dividends avoid payroll administration and CPP cost but are not deductible. The corporation’s taxable income moves with the choice. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What happens if I owe my company money at year end?**

Under subsection 15(2) a shareholder loan must generally be repaid within one year after the end of the corporation’s taxation year in which it was made, or the full unpaid balance is added to your personal income for that year.

**Is it better for the company to own my truck?**

Not always. Corporate ownership with personal use creates a taxable benefit that is often more costly than owning personally and being reimbursed for business kilometres. Either route depends on a mileage record kept during the year.

**Can I put my spouse on the payroll?**

Where the work is real and the amount is reasonable for what was done, yes. It is a commonly reviewed deduction, so the record of duties, an actual payment and consistent payroll reporting are what support it.

**Can my corporation deduct my home office?**

Not directly, because the corporation does not own or rent the home. The workable routes are a reimbursement of a reasonable share of actual costs, or a documented rental arrangement with the income reported personally.

**Are you based in Maple Ridge?**

No. EverStone serves Maple Ridge corporations remotely. Documents are exchanged securely online, returns are e-signed, and no in-person meeting is required.

**What does a corporate tax return cost in Maple Ridge?**

Nothing about a Maple Ridge address changes the fee. Price for a T2 alone is set after we review your enquiry and a look at the books. Owners of one-person trades companies usually pay $500 to $700 a month for bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end return with statements. [The fees are published](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Maple Ridge itself?**

Yes. Pitt Meadows, Albion, Silver Valley and Whonnock are treated the same as central Maple Ridge, with video or phone meetings, a secure upload link and unchanged fixed fees.
