# Corporate tax accountant for *Medicine Hat* corporations

An Alberta corporation files twice — once federally, once provincially. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Medicine Hat businesses, working fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Medicine Hat small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-medicine-hat).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a Medicine Hat corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both from one closed year end, remotely, for owner-managed Alberta corporations. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Medicine Hat corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, CCA, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips, instalments and the AT1.

## Two corporate returns, one set of figures

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate income tax, so a single T2 carries both the federal and provincial layers. Alberta does not. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA *and* the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The returns draw on the same trial balance, but they are separate filings, with separate accounts, separate correspondence and separate ways to fall behind.

The gap usually surfaces in one of two ways. A corporation incorporated in Alberta by an owner who moved from another province files the T2 on time for years and never files an AT1, because nothing in the federal software prompts it. Or a corporation files both, but the AT1 is prepared from a slightly different set of adjustments than the T2, and the two stop agreeing. Preparing them together, from one closed year end, is the arrangement that keeps both accurate.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for a Medicine Hat corporation

Active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at a combined 11% in Alberta — 9% federal plus 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

Two features of the local economy make the associated-group rule matter more here than the rate table suggests. Farm families around Medicine Hat often hold land in one corporation and the operating business in another, sometimes with a separate company for custom work or trucking. Industrial contractors frequently add a second company to hold equipment and rent it to the operating company. Where the same people control both, the corporations are usually associated and share one $500,000 limit, so the limit has to be allocated between them on Schedule 23 rather than claimed in full by each.

## Equipment, CCA and the year you buy

A large share of Medicine Hat corporations are equipment businesses: lifts, welding rigs, service trucks, excavators, trailers, irrigation pivots, greenhouse heating and growing systems. That equipment is deducted through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) by class, not expensed in the year it is bought, and the first-year claim depends on when the asset is available for use relative to the year end. A unit delivered the week after the year end produces nothing on that year’s return.

Disposals matter just as much. Trading in a truck or selling a unit for more than the undepreciated balance left in its class produces recapture, which is fully taxable income in the year of sale. Selling the last asset in a class can produce a terminal loss instead. Those outcomes are predictable months ahead if the CCA schedule is kept current, and they are a surprise if it is only opened at filing time. We keep the schedule live through the year so purchase and sale timing can be planned against the T2 and AT1, not discovered on them.

## Plant work, one client and personal services business risk

Medicine Hat’s petrochemical and industrial base supports many one-person and two-person corporations: instrumentation technicians, inspectors, project coordinators and engineers who contract into a single large operator for long stretches. The structure is legitimate, but it carries a specific corporate tax risk. If the CRA concludes the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, a higher rate applies and most ordinary deductions are disallowed.

The test looks at whether the individual would reasonably be regarded as an employee of the client if the corporation did not exist: control over the work, who supplies tools and equipment, the chance of profit and risk of loss, and whether the corporation genuinely serves more than one customer. A corporation that owns its own equipment, carries its own insurance, bids work competitively and invoices several clients sits in a very different position from one whose only asset is a laptop and a site pass. It is worth reviewing before the return is filed rather than after an assessment arrives.

## Instalments run on two streams

Once a corporation’s tax payable passes the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), an Alberta corporation pays twice: one stream to the CRA for federal tax, and another to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration for provincial tax. Interest runs separately on each. Instalments are usually based on a prior year, so a corporation coming off a strong year — a big turnaround season, an exceptional crop, a large equipment sale with recapture — keeps paying at that level into a quieter one unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the methods. The local point is that the provincial stream exists and is easy to overlook.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with permission, so it is worth choosing against how the business earns. A December year end suits a corporation whose work is spread evenly. It suits a greenhouse badly if December is the middle of its heating season and its crop is in the ground, and it suits an irrigated farm badly if grain is still in the bin and unsold. A month when the business is quiet and inventory is low gives a cleaner balance sheet, a calmer close and a filing deadline that does not collide with personal tax season. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## Owner pay, the balance owing and the AT1 deadline

The balance of corporate tax is generally due three months after year end for a Canadian-controlled private corporation claiming the small business deduction, and the T2 is due six months after year end. Owner pay sits underneath both. A salary or bonus has to be paid, or properly accrued and paid within the permitted window, to be deducted; a dividend is paid from after-tax profit and reported on a T5. Deciding the mix before year end is what lets the corporation use the 11% rate deliberately rather than by accident. [Personal tax in Medicine Hat](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-medicine-hat) covers the owner’s side of the same decision.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Medicine Hat office, no branch and no local staff, and that is stated plainly rather than implied. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same rules wherever the preparer works. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them, and that the AT1 is never an afterthought.

Year-end planning only works against a number you set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in the last month of the year.

Common questions

## Medicine Hat corporate tax questions

**Does an Alberta corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Medicine Hat?**

The Alberta rates apply: 11% combined on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit shared by associated corporations.

**My family has a farm company and a trucking company. Do they share the limit?**

Usually, if the same people control both. Associated corporations share one $500,000 small business limit, allocated between them on Schedule 23. Each company claiming the full limit is a common error that a review will correct.

**Do you have a Medicine Hat office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Medicine Hat corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**Do I charge PST on sales from my Medicine Hat business?**

Not on sales within Alberta, which has no provincial sales tax — only 5% GST applies. Shipping goods or supplying certain services into Saskatchewan or British Columbia can create a registration obligation there, which is worth checking before you invoice.

**My corporation works almost entirely for one plant. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. Owning equipment, carrying risk and serving several clients all point the other way.

**Do you work with corporations outside Medicine Hat itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Redcliff, Dunmore, Cypress County, Bow Island and Brooks have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Medicine Hat ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Medicine Hat corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers by email, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by email, video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Medicine Hat corporation is onboarded the same way as any other Alberta file, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free first conversation.** By email or a short video call: what you do, what is filed and what is overdue, including whether every AT1 has actually been filed. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of federal and Alberta deadlines set before they arrive.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) — both go to a CPA, not a queue.
