# Corporate tax accountant for *Okotoks* corporations

An Alberta corporation files twice — once with the CRA and once with the province. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Okotoks businesses, fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Okotoks small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-okotoks).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so an Okotoks corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both from one closed year end. For a one-owner Okotoks corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450–$650 a month all-in.

The filings behind an Okotoks corporate year end: the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the AT1, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and instalments on two schedules.

## Two corporate returns, one set of figures

In most provinces the CRA collects provincial corporate tax on the same T2, so an owner sees one return and one confirmation. Alberta is different. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns are built from the same trial balance, but they are separate filings with separate accounts, separate notices and separate balances.

The trouble usually starts when an Okotoks owner incorporates, files the T2 through software or a preparer who only handled the federal side, and assumes that was everything. The missing AT1 surfaces later as provincial correspondence, sometimes with penalties and interest attached. Preparing both together, from one closed year end, is the only way to keep the federal and provincial figures in agreement. Since April 2026 Alberta has also moved corporate income tax correspondence to online mail through TRACS by default, so someone needs to be watching that inbox as well as the CRA’s.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for an Okotoks corporation

Active business income that qualifies for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at 11% combined in Alberta — 9% federal and 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

For most Okotoks corporations the business limit is comfortably out of reach, and the real planning question is how much profit to leave in the company at 11% and how much to pay out to the household. The answer depends on the owner’s personal tax position, RRSP room, CPP, and what the family actually needs that year. The step from 11% to 23% is narrower here than in most provinces, but it still makes the associated-group rules worth checking where an owner or spouse holds more than one company — for example a holding company and an operating company, or a consulting corporation alongside a spouse’s practice.

## Consulting corporations and the one-client problem

Professional, scientific and technical services are one of the sectors the Town of Okotoks identifies as central to its economy, and many of those businesses are one-person corporations billing a single large organization. That structure is legitimate, but it carries a specific corporate tax risk. If the CRA concludes the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, the general federal rate applies with an additional surtax, and almost every ordinary business deduction is disallowed.

The determination turns on control, tools, the right to subcontract, financial risk and how integrated the worker is into the client’s business — the same factors used to separate employees from contractors. A corporation with one client, set hours, a desk and a laptop supplied by that client, and no other customers is the profile that draws attention. Reviewing the contract and the way the work is actually done before the return is filed costs far less than defending a reassessment. The free [personal services business check](https://www.everstonecpa.com/psb-risk-assessment) is a reasonable first step.

## No provincial sales tax, and what replaces it

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so an Okotoks corporation selling within the province charges 5% GST and nothing else. That simplifies the corporate year end: no non-recoverable provincial tax buried in cost of goods sold, no second sales-tax reconciliation to clear before the close, and no second authority to answer. Food and beverage producers and online sellers in town feel the other side of this, though. Ship goods to a customer in an HST province and the rate follows the customer, and selling into a province with its own PST can create a registration there. That question belongs in the year-end review rather than after a notice arrives.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once a corporation’s tax payable passes the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), it pays two streams: one to the CRA for federal tax, one to Alberta for provincial tax. Interest runs on each independently, so being current with one does not protect you on the other. The instalment base is usually last year’s tax, which means a corporation coming off a strong year keeps paying at that level into a quieter one unless the estimate is revised on purpose. For a trades company whose work slows over winter, or a consultant between contracts, that revision is often worth real cash. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the methods.

## Equipment, vehicles and capital cost allowance

Okotoks trades, contractors and producers buy trucks, trailers, tools and equipment that are claimed through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) by class rather than written off in the year of purchase. The timing of a purchase relative to the year end changes the first-year claim, and selling or trading in a vehicle can produce recapture if the proceeds exceed what remains in the class. Passenger vehicles have their own class and cost limits, and a vehicle used partly for personal driving raises a taxable benefit question for the owner. We sort all of that out at the year end, with the bill of sale and the trade-in value in hand rather than estimated.

## Choosing a year end that suits the business

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with CRA approval, so it is worth choosing deliberately. A December year end puts the close on top of personal tax season and, for a seasonal business, can land in the middle of the busiest stretch. A year end in a quieter month gives cleaner inventory and work-in-progress figures, leaves time to decide on a bonus while it is still deductible, and spreads the accounting workload across the year. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Okotoks office and no local staff. Records arrive through a secure upload link, you authorize us through your CRA My Business Account, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same federal and Alberta rules wherever the preparer sits; what matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them and answers the notices afterwards.

Common questions

## Okotoks corporate tax questions

**Does an Okotoks corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Okotoks?**

The Alberta rates apply: 11% combined on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit.

**What does corporate tax cost for an Okotoks business?**

The fee is the same in Okotoks as anywhere else we work. A corporate return on its own is quoted after we review your enquiry; for a one-owner corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements usually run $450 to $650 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you have an Okotoks office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Okotoks corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**My corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker classification.

**Do you work with corporations outside Okotoks itself?**

Yes. Corporations in High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, De Winton and across Foothills County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Okotoks ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee. For the city, see [accountant in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary).

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Okotoks corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

An Okotoks corporation is onboarded the same way as any other Alberta file, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) through Represent a Client, so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
