# Corporate tax accountant for *Red Deer* corporations

Alberta corporations file twice — once federally, once provincially. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Red Deer businesses, working fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Red Deer small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-red-deer).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax. So a Red Deer corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA, and a separate Alberta AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both returns from one year-end file, remotely. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Red Deer corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, CCA, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips and instalments.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate income tax, so a single T2 carries both the federal and provincial layers. Alberta does not. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA *and* the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns draw on the same trial balance, but they are separate filings with separate accounts, separate correspondence and separate ways to fall behind.

A Red Deer owner who has only ever seen one filing confirmation is usually missing the second return rather than exempt from it. We see it most with corporations that started in another province and moved their operations to central Alberta, and with owners who changed preparers. Preparing both together, from one closed year end, is the only arrangement that keeps the federal and provincial figures reconciled.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for a Red Deer corporation

Active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at a combined 11% in Alberta — 9% federal plus 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

The step from qualifying to non-qualifying income therefore costs 12 points here, against 16 in British Columbia and 18 in Manitoba. For a growing Red Deer manufacturer or contractor approaching the business limit, that spread changes the arithmetic on whether to restructure, pay bonuses to stay under it, or simply let the excess be taxed at the general rate and retain it. The decision should start from the Alberta numbers rather than a rule of thumb brought in from elsewhere.

The business limit is also shared. An owner who has a holding company, a second operating company or a spouse with a related corporation may find the $500,000 has to be split between them. [Associated corporations and the small business deduction](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/associated-corporations-small-business-deduction) explains how that test works.

## Equipment and capital cost allowance

Red Deer’s manufacturing and oilfield service companies carry more capital equipment than a typical small corporation: shop machinery, welding and fabrication equipment, trucks and trailers, rental fleets. Every one of those assets is claimed through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) on Schedule 8, by class, and the timing of a purchase relative to the year end decides which year gets the first claim. A trade-in is a disposal even where no cash changes hands, and claiming more depreciation than an asset actually lost in value brings the excess back into income as recapture in the year it is sold.

That is why we review the fixed-asset register every year rather than rolling the schedule forward. A missing disposal leaves the class balances wrong, and the error carries into every return after it.

## No provincial sales tax, and what it removes

Alberta has no provincial sales tax. A corporation selling only within the province charges 5% GST and nothing else, holds one sales-tax registration and files one set of returns. That simplifies the corporate tax file as well: no non-recoverable provincial tax sits buried in cost of goods sold or in the capital cost of equipment, and there is no second reconciliation to tie out before the year end closes.

The exposure that replaces it is directional. A Red Deer manufacturer shipping fabricated products to customers in British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, or into an HST province, has sales-tax questions on those invoices that do not arise on local work. They belong in the year-end conversation, because they are usually discovered late.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once a Red Deer corporation has tax payable above the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), it pays twice: one stream to the CRA for the federal balance and another to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration for the provincial one. Interest accrues independently on each. The instalment base is built from prior-year figures, so a corporation coming off a strong year in the oil patch keeps paying at that level into a slower one unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the calculation methods.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with the CRA’s permission, so it is worth choosing against how the business actually earns. A Red Deer construction company whose work peaks over the summer, or a service company whose busiest months follow winter access in the field, gains little from a December year end that lands in the middle of the season. A quieter month gives cleaner inventory and work-in-progress figures, time to decide on bonuses before the deduction deadline, and a filing date that does not collide with personal tax season. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Red Deer office, no branch and no local staff, and no office visits are needed. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and transmitted electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same rules wherever the preparer works. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them, and that both returns come out of one set of books.

Year-end planning only works against a number set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in December.

Common questions

## Red Deer corporate tax questions

**Does an Alberta corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Red Deer?**

The Alberta rates apply. Combined rates are 11% on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit.

**Do you have a Red Deer office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Red Deer corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**We bought equipment just before year end. Does that help?**

Often, if the asset was available for use before the year end and the year’s income can use the deduction. The claim is made through capital cost allowance by class, not as an expense, and a trade-in on the same purchase is a disposal that has to be recorded too.

**We think the AT1 was never filed. What now?**

File the missing years, oldest first, and reconcile the provincial instalment account at the same time. We confirm what is outstanding before quoting, so you know the scope and the fee before anything is filed.

**My corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker classification.

**Do you work with corporations outside Red Deer itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe, Innisfail, Penhold and Red Deer County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Red Deer ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Red Deer corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers email, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise. It suits owner-managed manufacturers, contractors, service companies and professional corporations. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by email, video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are in Alberta.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Red Deer corporation is onboarded the same way as any other, and on the same fixed fee.

- **An email enquiry.** Tell us what the corporation does, what has been filed and what is overdue. You get a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books brought current, any missing T2 or AT1 years scheduled oldest first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) — both go to a CPA, not a queue.
