# Corporate tax accountant for *Spruce Grove* corporations

Every Alberta corporation files twice — once with the CRA and once with the province. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated Spruce Grove businesses, working online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [Spruce Grove small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-spruce-grove).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a Spruce Grove corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both from one year-end file, remotely. For a one-owner Spruce Grove trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner Spruce Grove corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, CCA, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips and instalments.

## Two corporate returns from one year end

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate income tax, so one T2 carries both the federal and the provincial layer. Alberta does not. A Spruce Grove corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA *and* the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns draw on the same trial balance, but they are separate filings, with separate accounts, separate correspondence and separate ways to fall behind.

The common failure is simple: an owner who set up a corporation, perhaps after moving from another province, files the T2 and assumes that was the whole obligation. The gap usually surfaces later as provincial correspondence. Since 1 April 2026 Alberta has made online mail through TRACS the default for corporate income tax notices, so a provincial letter may sit unread in an account nobody checks. Preparing both returns together, from one closed year end, keeps the two sets of figures reconciled and the provincial account watched.

## What Alberta’s rates mean for a Spruce Grove corporation

Active business income eligible for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at a combined 11% in Alberta — 9% federal plus 2% provincial — on a $500,000 business limit shared across an associated group. Income above that limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in Canada.

For a typical Spruce Grove contractor, hauler or service company, two practical points follow. First, at 11% the corporation is an efficient place to build a reserve for the next equipment purchase or a slow season, provided the owner does not need every dollar personally. Second, the association rules matter: an owner with a second corporation, or a spouse with one, may be sharing a single $500,000 limit without realising it. That is worth confirming before the return is filed rather than after an assessment.

## Equipment, CCA and the timing of a purchase

Many Spruce Grove corporations carry trucks, trailers, loaders, shop equipment or rental units. These are recovered through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) at a rate set by each asset’s class, not deducted in the year of purchase. The claim depends on when the asset became available for use, and the half-year rule generally limits the first-year claim, though the Accelerated Investment Incentive can allow a larger first-year deduction for eligible property. Which applies depends on the asset and the year it was put to use.

The other side is disposal. When a unit is sold or traded in, the proceeds are compared with the undepreciated capital cost left in its class, and depreciation claimed beyond the real loss in value comes back into income as recapture. A trade-in is still a disposal even though no cash changes hands. On the T2, this is the item most likely to turn a routine year into an unexpected bill, and the one most easily planned for in advance.

## No provincial sales tax, and the exposure that replaces it

Alberta has no provincial sales tax. A Spruce Grove corporation selling only within Alberta charges 5% GST and nothing else, holds one sales-tax registration and has no non-recoverable provincial tax buried inside cost of sales. That makes the year-end file cleaner: one sales-tax reconciliation, not two.

The exposure that replaces it is directional. A Spruce Grove business whose crews or trucks work into British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, or that ships goods there, can pick up a registration obligation in that province. Where the corporation also has a permanent establishment outside Alberta, its income has to be allocated between provinces on the corporate return. Both questions belong in the year-end conversation, because they are normally found late.

## Single-client corporations and personal services business risk

A share of Spruce Grove corporations are one-person companies contracting into a larger organization in the Edmonton region — a tradesperson, an engineer, a project manager or an IT specialist. That structure can work, but it attracts a specific risk: if the CRA concludes the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, the income is taxed at a higher federal rate and most ordinary deductions are disallowed. The test turns on control, tools, ability to subcontract and financial risk. It is worth reviewing before the return is filed.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once tax payable passes the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html), a Spruce Grove corporation pays twice: one stream to the CRA against the federal balance, the other to Alberta against the provincial one. Interest accrues independently on each. The base is usually built from the prior year, so a corporation coming off a strong contract year keeps paying at that level into a quieter one unless the estimate is revised deliberately. [How corporate instalments work](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the methods.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with permission, so it is worth choosing against how the business actually earns. A Spruce Grove construction or landscaping company whose work peaks in the summer and autumn gains little from a December year end if the books are still catching up with the season. A year end in a quieter month gives cleaner receivables and work-in-progress figures, leaves room to decide on bonuses and dividends, and keeps the filing deadline away from personal tax season.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no Spruce Grove office and no local staff. Records arrive through secure upload, questions are answered by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and filed electronically. The T2 and the AT1 are prepared to the same rules wherever the preparer works. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them. For the bigger picture, see [accounting across Alberta](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-alberta), or compare with [corporate tax in Edmonton](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-edmonton).

Year-end planning only works against a number you set earlier, which means [the budget behind the planning](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) rather than a guess in December.

Common questions

## Spruce Grove corporate tax questions

**Does an Alberta corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in Spruce Grove?**

The Alberta rates apply: 11% combined on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit shared across associated corporations.

**Do you have a Spruce Grove office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Spruce Grove corporations entirely remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing about the engagement requires an in-person meeting.

**I traded in a truck. Why did my corporate tax go up?**

Most likely recapture. The trade-in value is compared with the undepreciated capital cost left in that class, and depreciation claimed beyond the real loss in value is added back to income. A trade-in counts as a disposal even though no cash changes hands.

**Can a CPA outside Alberta file my Alberta returns?**

Yes. The T2 and AT1 are prepared to federal and Alberta rules that do not change with the preparer’s location, and both are filed electronically. Authorization is granted online through the CRA and the provincial account.

**My corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation providing services that would otherwise look like employment can be assessed as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most ordinary deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker classification.

**Do you work with corporations outside Spruce Grove itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Stony Plain, Parkland County and Acheson have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as Spruce Grove ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Spruce Grove corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers in writing, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site: the engagement runs by email, video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

A Spruce Grove corporation is onboarded in three steps, on a fixed fee.

- **A free first conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue, by email or a short video call. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of federal and Alberta deadlines set before they arrive.
