# Corporate tax accountant for *St. Albert* corporations

An Alberta corporation files twice, once federally and once provincially. EverStone prepares the T2 and the Alberta AT1 together for incorporated St. Albert businesses, working fully online. See the [Alberta tax reference](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) or the wider [St. Albert small-business practice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-st-albert).

**Quick answer:** Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a St. Albert corporation files a federal T2 with the CRA and a separate AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. EverStone prepares both from one closed year end, remotely. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 together usually run $450–$650 a month.

One-owner St. Albert corporations: bookkeeping, payroll and the T2 from $450 to $650 a month. Filings: the T2, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner, the AT1 and both instalment streams.

## Two corporate returns, not one

Most provinces let the CRA collect their corporate tax, so a single T2 carries both layers. Alberta does not. A corporation with a permanent establishment in Alberta files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. The two returns are built from the same trial balance, but they are separate filings with separate accounts, separate notices and separate balances that can fall behind on their own.

In St. Albert this matters for a specific reason. A lot of the corporations here were set up by owners who moved from elsewhere, or were incorporated in a hurry when a contract required it, and their filing history was built around a single return. When a corporation has filed T2s for years and never an AT1, the provincial side usually catches up with it through correspondence, with interest already running. Preparing both returns from one closed year end is the arrangement that keeps the two sets of figures reconciled.

## What Alberta's rates mean for your return

Active business income that qualifies for the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) is taxed at 11% combined in Alberta, 9% federal plus 2% provincial, on the first $500,000. That limit is shared across an associated group, so an owner with a holding company and two operating companies does not get three of them. Income above the limit, or income that does not qualify, is taxed at 23% combined: 15% federal plus Alberta's 8% general rate, the lowest provincial general rate in the country.

The spread between those two rates is 12 points. That is narrower than in most provinces, and it changes the arithmetic on two common St. Albert questions. First, whether it is worth restructuring to protect the business limit when a growing contractor or manufacturer passes $500,000 of profit: sometimes yes, but the saving per dollar is smaller here, so the cost and complexity of the restructuring has to be smaller too. Second, whether to leave profit in the company: income taxed at 23% and retained is still taxed lightly by national standards, which supports retention for a company that needs capital for equipment or expansion.

## Equipment, CCA and the timing of a purchase

St. Albert's business parks hold a lot of equipment: manufacturing lines, forklifts and racking in distribution buildings, trucks and trailers, and the tools and machinery contractors take out to job sites in Sturgeon County. Each asset goes into a capital cost allowance class with its own rate, and the year it becomes available for use decides when the deduction starts. A purchase made a week before the year end can produce a claim in that year; the same purchase a week after waits twelve months. That is a reason to talk before buying, not after. We prepare the CCA schedule for both returns and check that disposals and trade-ins are recorded so that recapture or a terminal loss is reported in the right year. [The CCA classes guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) sets out the common ones.

## Consulting corporations and personal services business risk

St. Albert has many one-person corporations whose owners contract into larger organizations around the Edmonton region: engineers, project managers, IT specialists and health administrators. That structure is legitimate, but it carries a specific risk. If the CRA concludes the corporation is a [personal services business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/personal-services-business-psb-risk-canada), the small business deduction is denied, a higher federal rate applies, and almost every ordinary deduction is disallowed. The test turns on control, tools, subcontracting and risk, the same factors that separate employees from contractors. A corporation with one client, a desk in that client's office and no business risk of its own fits the pattern that draws attention. It is worth reviewing before the return is filed.

## Instalments run on two schedules

Once a corporation's tax passes the threshold that triggers [instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada), it pays twice: one stream to the CRA for federal tax and one to Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration for provincial tax. Interest is charged separately on each. Instalment bases are built from prior-year figures, so a corporation coming off a strong year keeps paying at that level into a weaker one unless the estimate is revised on purpose. We review both streams at mid-year against actual results.

## Choosing a year end that suits the work

A fiscal year end is chosen once and changed only with CRA approval, so choose it against how the business earns. A St. Albert renovation contractor or landscaper whose work peaks in summer gains little from a summer year end: the close lands in the busiest weeks and the balance sheet is at its least representative. A quieter month gives cleaner work-in-progress figures, time to decide on bonuses and equipment, and a filing deadline that does not collide with April. [Choosing a fiscal year end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) works through the trade-offs.

## How the engagement runs online

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm. There is no St. Albert office, no branch and no local staff. Records arrive by secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and both returns are e-signed and filed electronically. Alberta corporate tax correspondence moved to online mail through TRACS as the default from 1 April 2026, so provincial notices arrive electronically, the same as CRA notices through My Business Account. What matters is that the CPA who reviews the year-end figures is the one who files them.

Common questions

## St. Albert corporate tax questions

**Does a St. Albert corporation really file two returns?**

Yes. Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so a corporation with a permanent establishment in the province files the federal T2 with the CRA and the AT1 with Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration. Both are prepared from the same year-end file and filed together. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the corporate tax rate in St. Albert?**

The same as anywhere in Alberta: 11% combined on active business income eligible for the small business deduction (9% federal plus 2% Alberta) and 23% on general income (15% federal plus Alberta’s 8% general rate), on a $500,000 business limit shared across associated corporations.

**Do you have a St. Albert office?**

No. EverStone is fully virtual and serves St. Albert corporations remotely. Documents move by secure upload, returns are e-signed, and nothing requires an in-person meeting.

**We have never filed an AT1. What now?**

We confirm which years are outstanding, prepare the missing AT1s from the trial balances behind the federal returns already filed, and settle the provincial balance. Filing before Alberta asks is generally the better position.

**My corporation has one main client. Is that a problem?**

It is worth reviewing. A corporation whose work would otherwise look like employment can be treated as a personal services business, which denies the small business deduction and most deductions. The factors are the same ones used to test worker status.

**Do you work with corporations outside St. Albert itself?**

Yes. Corporations in Morinville, Gibbons, Bon Accord, Legal and Sturgeon County have their T2 and AT1 prepared exactly as St. Albert ones do, remotely and at the same fixed fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a St. Albert corporation that wants a fixed fee, a CPA who answers email, and a year end that does not arrive as a surprise: a contractor, a manufacturer or distributor in one of the business parks, a professional practice or a consulting company. It does not fit a company that needs someone on site. The engagement runs by video, secure upload and e-signature, and [the fee is the same](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) wherever you are.

## What happens when you get in touch

A St. Albert corporation is onboarded the same way as any other, and on the same fixed fee.

- **An email first.** Tell us what the business does, what has been filed and what is late. A CPA replies within one business day with questions or a fixed fee in writing, and there is no obligation to take it.

- **Access in the first week.** You add us as your representative through CRA My Business Account ([Represent a Client](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01)), so notices, balances and slips are looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), the prior file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books brought up to date, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of federal and Alberta deadlines set out before they arrive.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question). Both go to a CPA, not a queue.
