# Corporate tax accountant for *Surrey* corporations

Surrey’s corporate tax problems are usually problems of scale: a second company, a payroll that crosses a threshold, [instalments](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-payments/paying-instalments.html) sized to last year. EverStone prepares the T2 remotely for [Surrey businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-surrey); construction files are covered on the [contractor page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant-surrey).

**Quick answer:** As a Surrey corporation grows it typically meets three corporate tax thresholds at once: a business limit shared with associated companies, an [employer health tax](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/employer-health-tax) that starts at a set payroll, and instalments. EverStone prepares the T2 remotely at a fixed fee. For a trades corporation with one owner, a combined package of bookkeeping, payroll and year-end filing usually costs $500–$700 per month.

The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

Three thresholds a growing company meets without deciding to.

## The second company that halves your limit

Growth in Surrey often takes the form of a second corporation, a separate entity for a new line, a property, a partner, or simply to ring-fence risk. The commercial reasoning is usually sound and the tax consequence is usually unplanned: associated corporations share one $500,000 business limit and allocate it between them. Two companies do not produce two limits, and where the allocation is not filed deliberately the CRA can assign it. With British Columbia’s combined rates at 11% and 27%, every dollar pushed past the shared limit costs 16 additional points. [When multiple corporations make sense](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/multiple-corporations-when-it-makes-sense) covers when the structure earns its cost.

## Control is wider than ownership

Association is broader than shareholdings. Corporations can be associated through control by the same person or group, through related persons, and through options and agreements that would give control if exercised. Family ties can pull companies together: a spouse’s or child’s separate business may be relevant, depending on the shareholdings.

The test is corporate, not industry-based, so two unrelated businesses can share one limit. Association turns on facts: map the group before the return, not after an assessment. That map decides the corporate taxes Surrey groups pay, because the shared limit is what separates the 11% combined rate from the 27% one.

## Payroll thresholds arrive quietly

A Surrey business that adds crews or shifts crosses the BC employer health tax threshold without any decision being made about it. The tax applies once annual BC remuneration exceeds $1,000,000. Between $1,000,000 and $1,500,000 the charge is 5.85% of the excess over $1,000,000; above $1,500,000 it becomes 1.95% of total BC remuneration with no exemption at all. The rate in the middle band exists to phase the exemption out, which is why a modest increase near the boundary can carry an outsized cost. [The BC employer health tax guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-employer-health-tax-guide) works through the calculation.

## Instalments sized to the wrong year

Instalments use prior-year figures, so they run wrong for a growing business. A Surrey corporation that doubled its profit pays on the smaller year, then meets a large balance and interest at filing. Paying peak-year instalments into a slower year is the reverse: a cash flow problem, equally avoidable. The estimate can be revised, with risk if the year finishes stronger. [Corporate instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada) sets out the calculation options.

## Where retained profit goes next

A company that has grown past what the owner needs personally accumulates cash, and that cash has a second-order tax effect. Passive investment income earned inside the corporation grinds down the business limit, so a successful operating business can lose access to the [small business deduction](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/t4012.html) because of what its savings earned rather than anything it did commercially. The step from 11% to 27% is the same 16 points either way. Deciding deliberately what happens to retained profit — reinvestment, distribution or a separate structure — is a corporate tax decision rather than an investment one. [Leaving money in the corporation](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/leave-money-in-corporation-or-pay-out-canada) covers the trade-off.

## The return still has to reconcile

Everything above rests on books that close cleanly, and growth is when that breaks: volume rises, more people touch the ledger, intercompany balances appear, and the shareholder account collects unclassified items. A T2 prepared with an unreconciled intercompany balance has a known error in it. Closing those balances first is the difference between a return that stands up and one that needs amending.

## One CPA for Surrey and South Surrey, working remotely

EverStone is a one-CPA virtual firm with no Surrey office, no Newton or Guildford location and no local staff. Work runs by secure document exchange, video review, e-signature and electronic filing. For related companies, the association analysis, limit allocation and intercompany balances sit with one person, not a team. That is the practical case for one corporate tax accountant Surrey BC groups can hand the whole file to, at a fee fixed in writing before work begins.

Growth past a threshold is easier to manage when it is forecast, and [a rolling forecast](https://www.everstonecpa.com/budgeting-and-forecasting) shows it coming before December does.

If [the Surrey personal tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-surrey) is the more pressing job, start there instead.

Where the same file also needs [Surrey](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-surrey) and [getting the Surrey returns filed](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-surrey), that is handled in one engagement.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

Designed for a growing Surrey company, or a family of related ones, that wants thresholds and the shared limit tracked by one CPA at an agreed fee. Not designed for price-only buyers, or anyone needing an accountant on the premises weekly. Everything is remote, on [published pricing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

A Surrey company, or group, comes on board in three steps.

- **Email enquiry.** Tell us about each company, its filings and anything late. A fixed fee comes back in writing, no strings attached.

- **CRA access per company.** With [authorization](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) filed, balances and notices are checked directly. If [another firm](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) holds the files, we ask for them in week one.

- **Current, with dates set.** Books close, missed returns go in oldest first, and every [T2 and instalment date](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t2-deadline) for the year is diarised.

[Send your enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) first.

Common questions

## Surrey corporate taxes: common questions

**If I set up a second company, do I get another $500,000 limit?**

No. Associated corporations share a single $500,000 business limit and allocate it between them. Where the allocation is not filed deliberately it can be assigned, and income beyond the shared limit is taxed at 27% rather than 11%. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How do corporations become associated?**

Through control by the same person or group, through related persons, and through options or agreements that would give control if exercised. It is determined by the facts of control rather than by whether the businesses are in the same industry.

**When does BC employer health tax start?**

Once annual BC remuneration exceeds $1,000,000. Between $1,000,000 and $1,500,000 the charge is 5.85% of the excess; above $1,500,000 it becomes 1.95% of total BC remuneration with no exemption.

**Why do I owe interest when I paid my instalments?**

Because instalments are based on prior-year figures. A business that grew pays instalments sized to a smaller year and meets the shortfall, plus interest, when the return is filed. The estimate can be revised, though that carries its own risk.

**Can investment income affect my operating company’s rate?**

Yes. Passive investment income earned inside the corporation reduces the business limit, so a profitable operating business can lose access to the small business deduction because of what its retained cash earned.

**Do you have a Surrey office?**

No. EverStone works online and serves Surrey corporations remotely. Documents are exchanged securely online, the return is e-signed and filed electronically, and there is nothing to attend in person.

**What does a corporate tax return cost in Surrey?**

Nothing about a Surrey address changes the fee. A lone T2 is quoted once we have seen the books and any associated companies. With one owner and a trades business, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements usually come to $500 to $700 a month. [The published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) set out the rest.

**Do you work with businesses outside Surrey itself?**

Yes. Cloverdale, Newton, Fleetwood, South Surrey and White Rock are served just as Surrey City Centre is, using video, phone, email and a secure upload link, for the same fixed fees.
