# Energy services accountant in *Sherwood Park*

Strathcona County is home to what it calls Canada’s largest hydrocarbon refining cluster, and to a long chain of owner-managed companies that maintain, inspect, supply and service those plants. Those companies carry two things most small corporations do not: serious equipment, and income that arrives in bursts tied to shutdowns and projects. EverStone handles both at fixed fees, online.

**Quick answer:** Energy and industrial services files turn on two things: equipment, where the class, the financing choice and the eventual disposal each move the tax, and lumpy turnaround and project income, which makes instalments easy to misjudge. For Sherwood Park companies, EverStone handles the T2 and AT1, CCA and disposal schedules, GST and instalment planning at a fixed fee agreed up front. Published fees start at $300 a month for bookkeeping and $100 for a personal return.

The work is set in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, which Strathcona County shares with Fort Saskatchewan, Lamont County, Sturgeon County and Edmonton. For the Edmonton side, see [energy services accounting in Edmonton](https://www.everstonecpa.com/energy-services-accountant-edmonton).

## Who this covers

The companies we have in mind are the smaller firms around the large operators: mechanical and electrical maintenance contractors, turnaround and shutdown crews, scaffolding, insulation and coatings firms, non-destructive testing and inspection companies, safety and rescue services, industrial cleaning, equipment and tool rental, crane and hauling operators, and the engineering and technical consultants who plan the work. Most are incorporated, owner-managed and dependent on a handful of customers.

## Equipment is the biggest lever on the return

Trucks, trailers, lifts, compressors, testing instruments and shop equipment are capital, not expenses. They are recovered through capital cost allowance at a rate set by each asset’s class, and the decisions around them — which class, buy or lease, when to take delivery — directly affect tax. In the year an asset becomes available for use the half-year rule generally limits the claim, though the Accelerated Investment Incentive suspends that for eligible property and can allow a much larger first-year deduction. Which applies depends on the asset and the year, so confirm before you commit. See [CCA classes](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) and [the half-year rule](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/half-year-rule-cca-canada).

## Disposals, trade-ins and the bill nobody budgets for

When you sell or trade equipment, the proceeds are compared with the undepreciated capital cost left in that class. If you claimed more depreciation than the unit actually lost in value — common with well-maintained equipment in a strong used market — the excess comes back into income as recapture, fully taxable in the year of sale. A trade-in is still a disposal even though no cash changes hands. This is the most common source of an unexpected tax bill in equipment-heavy businesses, and it is easy to plan for if it is seen coming.

## Turnaround income, instalments in a straight line

Plant maintenance shutdowns and projects do not produce even revenue. A company can earn a large share of its year in a few busy months, then wait for the next award. Instalments calculated on a flat projection will be wrong in one direction or the other — overpaying through a slow stretch, or arriving at the deadline short after a strong one.

Instalments for the next year are usually set against the prior year’s tax, so one busy season can leave you paying at a level the following year does not support. They can be based on the current year’s estimate instead, but if the estimate proves low, interest applies on the shortfall. In Alberta that decision covers two streams, federal and provincial. We make it deliberately each year against the work you actually have booked. See [corporate instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-tax-installments-canada).

## Crews, contractors and classification

Turnaround work brings large temporary crews, and some companies engage individuals as contractors rather than employees. Classification turns on the substance of the arrangement — who controls the schedule, who supplies the equipment, who carries the financial risk — not the contract label. Long-term field hands paid as contractors are a common reassessment target, and the bill for back source deductions, penalties and interest falls on the payer. See [payroll in Sherwood Park](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-sherwood-park).

## Alberta makes the compliance calendar lighter

With no provincial sales tax and no employer health tax, the sales-tax side is GST only and the payroll side is CPP, EI and WCB-Alberta premiums. That leaves GST returns, payroll remittances, the T2 and the Alberta AT1. Large equipment purchases carry large input tax credits that are worth claiming promptly rather than leaving to the year end. Work at a site in another province can bring that province’s sales-tax rules with it, so sort out registration before mobilizing.

## What operators, lenders and bonding companies ask to see

Growth usually needs someone else’s comfort: a lender extending an equipment facility, a bonding company backing a contract, or an operator’s vendor prequalification. All three ask for financial statements. For most owner-managed service companies the answer is a compilation engagement prepared under CSRS 4200, which provides no assurance and says so. Where a counterparty specifically requires a review or audit, that is a different engagement, and we will tell you directly. See [financial statements in Sherwood Park](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statements-sherwood-park).

## What EverStone handles, and what it costs

- T2 and Alberta AT1 corporate returns, and year-end financial statements
- CCA schedules by class across every asset
- Disposal, trade-in and recapture calculations
- Lease versus buy compared on after-tax cost before you sign
- GST filed and reconciled, including large-purchase input tax credits
- Instalments planned around real turnaround and project cash flow
- Payroll remittances and WCB-Alberta reporting where you employ crew

Monthly bookkeeping starts from $300 a month and a personal return from $100; a corporate return is quoted after we review your enquiry. A single question can go to a 45-minute Advice Call, a flat fee of $200 + GST. Every fee is fixed in writing first. See the [published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## Fixed fees, fully online

EverStone is a fully virtual CPA firm with no Sherwood Park office. Everything runs by email, video and secure upload — which suits owners who spend their days on a plant site. The fee is fixed before work starts, which is what makes the email before a major equipment purchase worth sending. Common questions

## Sherwood Park energy and industrial services FAQ

**Should we buy or lease our equipment?**

It depends how long you will run the asset and what you need from the balance sheet. A purchase gives CCA over time plus deductible interest; an operating lease gives deductible payments but no asset. We compare the two on after-tax cost across the asset’s life. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**We traded in a unit and the tax bill jumped. Why?**

Almost certainly recapture. The proceeds are compared with the undepreciated capital cost left in the class, and depreciation claimed beyond the real loss in value comes back into income. A trade-in counts as a disposal even though no cash moves.

**Our income comes in big turnaround seasons. How should instalments work?**

They can follow the prior year’s tax or a current-year estimate. After a big season, a current-year estimate can keep payments realistic, but interest applies if it proves too low. In Alberta the decision covers federal and provincial instalments.

**Are our field workers contractors or employees?**

It depends on the real arrangement: control, tools, financial risk and whether the worker can send a replacement. Long-term field hands paid as contractors are a common reassessment target, with the cost falling on the payer.

**What does an accountant cost for a Sherwood Park energy services company?**

Monthly bookkeeping starts from $300 a month and a personal return from $100; a corporate return is quoted after we review your enquiry. A 45-minute Advice Call is $200 + GST. See the [published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you have a Sherwood Park office?**

No. EverStone is fully virtual. Everything is handled by email, video and secure upload, which suits work that happens in the field.

**Do you work with companies across the Industrial Heartland?**

Yes. Companies in Fort Saskatchewan, Ardrossan, Josephburg and elsewhere in Alberta are served the same way, at the same fixed fees.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an incorporated Sherwood Park or Strathcona County company that serves industrial plants and carries real equipment or crews. It does not fit a company that needs an accountant on site or an audit for a public counterparty; both are outside a remote, owner-managed engagement, and we will say so at the start.

## What happens when you get in touch

An industrial services company is onboarded in three steps, all remote, with the fee fixed at the first.

- **An email enquiry first.** Tell us what the business does, what is filed and what is overdue. A fixed fee comes back in writing, with no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01) through Represent a Client, so notices, balances and slips are looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of federal and Alberta deadlines set before they arrive.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) — both go to a CPA, not a queue.

## Running an industrial services company in Sherwood Park?

Equipment, recapture, instalments and both corporate returns handled by one CPA, at a fixed fee agreed up front.
