# Financial statements for *Calgary* energy services companies

When revenue follows a commodity cycle, year-end statements feed the covenant test that decides whether the credit facility survives a downturn. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Calgary businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary).

EverStone prepares [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) for incorporated corporations remotely.

**Quick answer:** Year-end statements for a Calgary energy services corporation are usually a CSRS 4200 compilation, but they are read as a covenant test. Working capital ratios, debt service coverage and the treatment of underused assets in a soft year determine what the statements say about the business. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $500–$700 a month.

For a one-owner Calgary corporation, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end financial statements with the T2 usually cost from $500 to $700 a month all-in. The year-end covers the T2 with Schedule 1 and Schedule 50, the CCA schedule, the small business deduction, T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay, and the instalments for the year ahead.

The covenant definitions live in the agreement, not in the statement captions.

## The statements are an input to a covenant calculation

Most credit agreements for an established services company set financial covenants: a minimum current ratio, a maximum funded debt to EBITDA, minimum debt service coverage, sometimes a net worth floor. Each uses the year-end statements and the agreement's definitions.

Those definitions rarely match the statement captions. What counts as funded debt, whether shareholder loans are excluded, how earnings are adjusted: the agreement decides. Ignore it and you learn of a breach from the lender.

## Classification decisions that move a ratio

A current ratio depends on where current ends and long-term begins, and some calls need judgement. Term debt due within twelve months is current. A demand facility is generally current in full. A [shareholder loan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/shareholder-loans-canada-taking-money-out-of-corporation) left in for years is current unless a written agreement postpones it.

None of these calls changes the business by a dollar, yet any can decide whether a covenant is met. So make them correctly and early, and know where the ratio sits before the statements are final.

## A soft year, and what it does to the balance sheet

When activity falls, three things hit at once. Receivables age as customers pay slower. Idle equipment keeps its book value and depreciation. And lower earnings worsen leverage even with debt unchanged.

If assets will no longer earn their carrying value, consider a write-down now. It hurts in a bad year but keeps the statements honest; stranded assets at full value cost credibility when it matters most.

## Revenue that arrives in bursts

Services work often comes in short bursts: a drilling program, a turnaround, a seasonal access window. Revenue and costs belong in the period of the work, not the invoice date, which can lag by weeks.

Two cut-off traps: work done near year end but billed after, which must be accrued; and mobilization or standby money received before work, an obligation until performed. Both distort the year a covenant is tested on.

## Compilation, review, audit, and what the agreement requires

A CSRS 4200 **compilation engagement** presents information management supplies, with no assurance: nothing verified, no opinion, neither review nor audit. That matters here, because covenant compliance rests on these figures.

Many credit agreements for mid-sized services companies specify the statements required, often review-engagement statements within set days of year end, or audited statements above a facility size. It is contractual, enforced before or not. Read the reporting covenant before choosing the year end.

## Alberta corporate tax and the year end

Alberta runs its own corporate income tax, so an Alberta corporation files a provincial return beside the federal [T2](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html). Preparing statements and both returns together avoids reconciling versions of one year.

The current Alberta corporate rates and filing requirements are set out on the [Alberta tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts) page. The [corporate tax hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-hub) covers the federal side and the deadlines that follow a fiscal year end.

## Working remotely

EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm with no Calgary presence.

This suits incorporated oilfield and industrial services companies, equipment and rental operators, engineering and technical consultancies, and the transport businesses that serve them. ## What a year-end file contains

What a year-end file contains
Statements and the tax return come from one set of numbers — for a business operating in Calgary, Alberta

| Component | What it shows |

| Balance sheet | What the corporation owns and owes at the year-end date |

| Income statement | Revenue and expenses over the fiscal year |

| Compilation engagement report | The CPA communication that accompanies compiled statements |

| T2 schedules | Schedules 100, 125 and 141, built from the same figures as the statements |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST only. Alberta levies no provincial sales tax |

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Calgary services company whose lender accepts compiled statements for its covenant reporting. If the credit agreement calls for a review or an audit, that is a separate engagement, and reading the agreement together on the first call settles it. The fee is then [quoted in writing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## Remote financial statement work

All of it is prepared online. **There is no Calgary office and no staff based there.** Because the books are looked at during the year, the covenant figures are rarely a surprise at year end.

An owner’s corporate and personal returns are decided together, and [personal tax in Calgary](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-calgary) is the other half.

The year end this all feeds into is [our Calgary corporate tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-calgary).

Where a lender or an agreement calls for assurance rather than a compilation, the next question is [assembling the working papers through the year](https://www.everstonecpa.com/audit-review-readiness).

Common questions

## Calgary energy services statement questions

**Where do I find the definitions used in my covenants?**

In the credit agreement, usually a definitions article near the front. Funded debt, shareholder loan exclusions and earnings adjustments are defined there, so statement headings alone often give the wrong answer. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Is a demand loan current or long-term?**

Generally current in full, because the lender can call it any time, however long it has run. That can move a current ratio a lot, so settle it before the statements are final.

**Do I have to write down idle equipment?**

When the carrying amount will not be recovered from use or sale. Idleness alone does not force it; a sustained downturn with no realistic redeployment does. Deferring it to protect a ratio only postpones the damage.

**When is revenue recognized on work finished but not yet invoiced?**

In the period the work was done. Work finished near year end and billed later is accrued at year end. Mobilization or standby money received early stays an obligation until the work is done.

**Does Alberta have its own corporate return?**

Yes. Alberta administers its corporate income tax provincially, so an Alberta corporation files a provincial return alongside the federal T2. Both are prepared from the same year-end statements. See the Alberta tax facts page for the current rates and the filing requirements that apply.

**Is there a Calgary office?**

No. EverStone works online, and Calgary engagements run fully remotely through secure file exchange, video calls and electronic signature.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Calgary?**

Nothing about a Calgary address changes the fee. Statements on their own are quoted after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $500 to $700 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Calgary itself?**

Yes. Year-end statements for businesses in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere are prepared exactly as for Calgary ones, from the same closed books, at the same fee.
