Year-end financial statements · Grande Prairie

# Financial statements for *Grande Prairie* businesses

In the Peace Region, year-end financial statements are rarely just a schedule to the tax return. They go to the bank behind the equipment line, the bonding company behind a contract, and the operator running a vendor check. EverStone prepares year-end statements for incorporated [Grande Prairie businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-grande-prairie) remotely, with the people who will read them in mind.

**Quick answer:** Most owner-managed Grande Prairie corporations need a compilation engagement under CSRS 4200: statements prepared by a CPA from your records, with a report that says plainly no assurance is given. That satisfies most lenders and supports the T2 and Alberta AT1. Where a lender requires a review or audit, that is a different engagement. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450–$650 a month.

For a one-owner Grande Prairie corporation, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end financial statements with the T2 usually cost from $450 to $650 a month all-in. Larger or multi-company files are quoted after we review your enquiry.

## Who reads Grande Prairie statements

The region’s economy leans on capital: service rigs and trucks for the Montney and Duvernay plays, equipment for forestry and construction, and land and machinery for farming. Capital usually comes with a lender, and the lender asks for annual statements. So do bonding companies, landlords on larger leases, and operators that prequalify contractors. Each reader looks at a different line — working capital, debt to equity, cash flow cover — and statements prepared only with the tax return in mind can answer the wrong question.

We start by asking who will receive the statements and what they test. That decides the presentation, the notes and sometimes the timing of the year-end work itself.

## Compilation, review or audit

For most owner-managed companies, the right engagement is a compilation prepared under CSRS 4200. The CPA compiles the statements from your records, and the compilation engagement report and a note describe the basis of accounting used. It is not an audit and not a review, and the report says so: a compilation provides no assurance. For a lender who mainly wants consistent, professionally prepared numbers, that is usually enough.

Some credit agreements and larger contracts specifically require a review engagement or an audit. Those are different engagements with different work and cost, and we will tell you directly if what you have will not satisfy the agreement, rather than let you present something that comes back. [Financial statement preparation](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) explains how the levels differ.

## The statements are an input to a covenant test

If your equipment or operating line has financial covenants, the year-end statements are the numbers the bank tests. The definitions that matter live in the credit agreement, not in accounting standards: how the bank defines debt, whether shareholder loans are subordinated and excluded, what counts as current. A ratio that passes on one reading can fail on another. We read the covenant section before the year end closes, calculate the test on the agreement’s own definitions, and raise any problem while there is still time to talk to the lender.

## Classification decisions that move a ratio

Several ordinary year-end choices move working capital and leverage ratios. A demand loan is generally current in full, because the lender can call it at any time, even if it is being repaid on a schedule. The current portion of term debt and equipment financing has to be split out. Shareholder loans can sit as current or long-term depending on their terms. Each of those is a presentation question with a right answer, and getting it right before the statements go out avoids an awkward conversation after.

## Equipment, depreciation and a slow year

Grande Prairie balance sheets are often dominated by equipment. For the statements, depreciation follows an accounting policy that reflects how the assets are used, which is not the same as the capital cost allowance claimed on the T2. The two are reconciled in the tax schedules. When activity drops and equipment sits idle for an extended period, the question of whether its carrying amount is still recoverable has to be considered, and a write-down may be required. That is uncomfortable in a covenant year, which is exactly why it should be raised early. [CCA classes](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) covers the tax side.

## Revenue that arrives in bursts

Field work around Grande Prairie is often finished before it is invoiced, and seasonal access means a lot of work can be completed in a short window. Revenue belongs to the period the work was performed, so a year end in the middle of a busy stretch needs a careful cut-off: unbilled work in progress recognized, costs matched to it, and holdbacks on construction contracts treated on their own timing. The [fiscal year-end guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/corporate-fiscal-year-end-canada-how-to-choose) explains why many service and construction companies choose a quieter month.

## Farm and forestry corporations

Agriculture and forestry remain anchor industries in the County of Grande Prairie. Farm corporations carry inventory of grain and livestock, land and machinery, and often related-party arrangements with family members who farm alongside. Forestry contractors carry heavy equipment and contract revenue tied to harvesting and hauling seasons. Both need statements that show the bank a clear picture of assets, debt and seasonal working capital, rather than a tax-driven summary.

## Alberta corporate tax and the year end

Alberta administers its own corporate income tax, so the same year-end statements support two returns: the federal T2 and the Alberta AT1. The statements, the T2 schedules — including the CCA schedule and the small business deduction claim — and the AT1 should all tie to one trial balance, and next year’s instalments are worked out from the same result. We prepare them together so there is only one set of figures. See [corporate tax in Grande Prairie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-grande-prairie) for the returns themselves.

## What makes it fast

A lender’s request usually arrives with a deadline. Statements are much quicker to produce when the bookkeeping has been current and reconciled all year, the fixed asset register is up to date and the loan statements are on file. Owners who keep [monthly bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-grande-prairie) with us get statements in weeks rather than months.

Common questions

## Grande Prairie financial statement questions

**What kind of statements does my bank need?**

Check the credit agreement or ask the account manager. Most owner-managed borrowers provide compiled statements under CSRS 4200. Some facilities or contracts require a review or an audit, which are different engagements. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Where do I find the definitions used in my covenants?**

In the credit agreement itself, usually in a definitions section and a financial covenants section. The bank tests the ratios on those definitions, not on general accounting terms, so they are the starting point.

**Is a demand loan current or long-term?**

Generally current in full, because the lender can call it at any time, even if it is being repaid on a schedule. That can change a working capital ratio sharply, which is worth knowing before the statements go to the bank.

**Do I have to write down idle equipment?**

A write-down is required where the carrying amount is no longer expected to be recovered. Equipment idle for a season is not automatically impaired, but an extended downturn makes the question real, and it should be considered before the year end, not after.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Grande Prairie?**

Nothing about a Grande Prairie address changes the fee. For a one-owner corporation, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end statements with the T2 usually run $450 to $650 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Grande Prairie itself?**

Yes. Year-end statements for corporations in Clairmont, Sexsmith, Wembley, Beaverlodge and the County of Grande Prairie are prepared the same way, remotely. There is no Grande Prairie office; everything runs by email, video and secure upload.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an incorporated Grande Prairie business that needs compiled statements for a lender, bonding company or vendor check, and wants them prepared by the CPA who files its T2 and AT1. It does not fit a company whose lender requires an audit: that needs an audit engagement, and we will say so up front.
