# Financial statements for *Guelph* manufacturers and owner-run companies

Two Guelph manufacturers can have the same sales, the same bank balance and the same year — and report profits that differ by a wide margin, entirely because of how the inventory on the floor and the jobs half-finished at year-end are measured. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Guelph businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-guelph).

Those measurements shape how the company looks to a bank, a buyer or a partner. EverStone prepares [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) for incorporated companies, remotely.

**Quick answer:** Year-end statements for a Guelph owner-managed company are typically a CSRS 4200 compilation. The decisions that shape them are how inventory and work in progress are counted and valued, how equipment and its financing are presented, and how customer deposits and long-running jobs are recognized. For a one-owner Guelph corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450–$650 a month.

Filings built from the statements include the T2 with Schedule 1, Schedule 50 and the CCA schedule, the GIFI schedules, and the T4 or T5 slips for the owner’s pay.

Financial statement preparation for Guelph companies follows CSRS 4200 and is quoted before the work starts.

## Who reads a Guelph company’s statements

Advanced manufacturing is one of the industry clusters the City of Guelph names, alongside agri-innovation and life sciences, and Centre Wellington lists manufacturing and agriculture as its key sectors. Those businesses borrow. Equipment loans, operating lines secured on receivables and inventory, and farm credit are all common, and every one of those lenders asks for annual statements, often with covenant calculations attached. Suppliers extending terms, customers qualifying a new vendor and buyers looking at an acquisition read them too. The statements are therefore not just the attachment to the T2; they are the document a third party uses to decide whether to deal with you.

## Inventory: the number that moves profit

For a manufacturer or food producer, inventory is usually the largest current asset and the most judgemental figure on the balance sheet. It is measured at the lower of cost and net realizable value. Cost includes materials and, for manufactured goods, the labour and a share of the production overhead that brought the item to its present state, so a company that expenses all its overhead as incurred understates inventory and profit in a growing year.

Net realizable value is where obsolete parts, slow-moving finished goods and product near its date come off. The count itself has to be reliable: a full physical count at or near year-end, cut-off checked so that goods received or shipped on the last days are on the right side of the line. A count done casually produces a profit figure that a lender cannot rely on and a tax return that is hard to defend.

## Work in progress and long-running jobs

Custom manufacturers, tool and die shops and contractors often have jobs spanning the year-end. Costs incurred on an unfinished job are an asset, not an expense, and where the contract is billed in stages, revenue is recognized as the work is performed rather than when the invoice goes out. That requires an estimate of how far each job has progressed and what it will cost to finish, supported by job-cost records. Without those records the estimate is a guess, and losses on a bad job are discovered after it closes rather than when they could still be managed.

Customer deposits sit the other way. Money received before the work is done is a liability on the balance sheet until it is earned. A company that books deposits as revenue looks more profitable than it is right up to the year it delivers less than it collected.

## Equipment, financing and the CCA difference

Capital-intensive Guelph companies carry significant equipment, often financed. On the statements, equipment is depreciated over its useful life on a basis that reflects how it is used up; on the tax return, it is written off through [capital cost allowance](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/capital-cost-allowance-cca-classes-canada) at prescribed rates. The two rarely match, and that is expected. What matters is that the asset register supports both, that disposals are removed, and that loans and leases are split between the portion due within a year and the rest, because lenders measure working capital on exactly that split.

## Shareholder loans and related companies

Owner-managed groups in and around Guelph often include a holding company, a company that owns the building, or a farm corporation alongside an operating one. Intercompany balances, management fees and rent between them need to agree on both sides and be disclosed as related-party transactions. A shareholder loan owed by the owner to the company is the other common item; if it is not repaid within the time the tax rules allow, it can be included in the owner’s income, so the year-end balance is something to look at before the statements are finalized rather than after.

## What a compilation covers, and what it does not

A CSRS 4200 **compilation engagement** assembles and presents information management supplies. The accountant does not test the inventory count, confirm the receivables or express any opinion or conclusion. It is neither an audit nor a review, and the statements carry a notice saying so.

For most owner-managed Guelph companies that is the right product, and most lenders accept it for a borrower of their size. The point at which it stops being enough is usually a larger facility, a covenant that requires a review engagement, a partner buying in, or a sale. Each brings a reader wanting assurance over the judgements a compilation does not test, inventory first among them. Deciding the level before the year-end beats revisiting closed periods. See [compilation versus review](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-vs-review-engagement).

## Working with a remote Canadian CPA

EverStone is one CPA working online. There is no Guelph office. Guelph engagements run by secure document exchange, video and e-signature; inventory count sheets, job-cost reports and loan statements arrive through the upload link, and the draft statements are walked through on a call before they are issued.

This suits incorporated manufacturers and job shops, food and agri-food producers, contractors, and professional and technology firms. The year-end this all feeds into is [our Guelph corporate tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-guelph).

None of this works on records that are behind, which is what [bookkeeping in Guelph](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-guelph) keeps current.

Where a lender or an agreement calls for assurance rather than a compilation, the next question is [what readiness for that engagement involves](https://www.everstonecpa.com/audit-review-readiness).

Common questions

## Guelph year-end statement questions

**How should our inventory be valued at year-end?**

At the lower of cost and net realizable value. For manufactured goods, cost includes materials, direct labour and a share of production overhead, and obsolete or damaged items are written down to what they will actually fetch. The count behind the figure needs proper cut-off on the last days of the year. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**When is revenue on a long-running job recognized?**

As the work is performed, measured against the expected total effort, rather than when invoices are issued. That needs job-cost records; without them the estimate at year-end is guesswork and losses on a job surface late.

**Are customer deposits revenue?**

No. Money received before the work is done is a liability until it is earned. Recording deposits as revenue flatters the year they arrive and penalizes the year the work is delivered.

**Will my bank accept compiled statements?**

Most lenders accept a compilation for owner-managed borrowers, but the loan agreement decides. Some facilities require a review engagement once they pass a certain size, so check the covenant before the year-end rather than after the statements are issued.

**Does a compilation test our inventory count?**

No. A compilation presents what management provides and carries no assurance, so the count and valuation are not examined and no opinion is given. A reader wanting comfort on inventory will ask for a review or an audit instead.

**Can a CPA outside Guelph prepare our statements?**

Yes. Financial reporting standards and the federal corporate return are national, and Ontario corporate tax is administered with the federal return for most corporations. Nothing about the work requires a local office.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Guelph?**

The fee is the same in Guelph as anywhere else EverStone works. Statements on their own are quoted after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450 to $650 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Guelph itself?**

Yes. Year-end statements for businesses in Fergus, Elora, Puslinch and the rest of Wellington County are prepared exactly as for Guelph ones, from the same closed books, at the same fee.
