# Financial statements for *Richmond Hill* companies

A bank, a landlord, a buyer or a grant program reads your year-end statements long after the T2 is filed, and it reads them for different things: whether revenue is real, whether equipment is worth what the balance sheet says, and whether the owner has been borrowing from the company. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Richmond Hill businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-richmond-hill).

EverStone prepares [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) for incorporated companies remotely, from the same books that produce the corporate return.

**Quick answer:** Year-end statements for a Richmond Hill owner-managed company are usually a CSRS 4200 compilation. The judgements that shape them are when contract and milestone revenue is recognised, how equipment and inventory are carried, how any SR&ED credit receivable is presented, and how shareholder balances are shown. For a one-owner Richmond Hill corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450–$650 a month.

Filings include T4 slips, Schedule 1 and Schedule 50.

Financial statement preparation for Richmond Hill companies follows CSRS 4200 and is quoted before the work starts.

## What Richmond Hill year-ends tend to involve

The City of Richmond Hill names professional, scientific and technical services, health, finance and insurance, and information and culture as its key sectors, and its business profiles feature software, electronics, robotics, advanced manufacturing and medical-technology companies. Those businesses produce year-ends with a particular shape. Engineering and IT consultancies bill on contracts and milestones. Software firms sell subscriptions and licences billed in advance. Electronics and device makers hold inventory and specialised equipment. Health practices carry clinic equipment and leases. And many of them have an SR&ED claim in progress at the year-end date.

Each of those creates a presentation decision that a reader cares about. The statements are where those decisions are made visible, which is why they are worth preparing deliberately rather than printed from the ledger.

## Contract and milestone revenue

A consulting or engineering firm working on a fixed-fee contract often does months of work before a milestone invoice goes out. If revenue is recognised only when invoiced, the costs sit in one period and the revenue in another, and the margin on the contract never appears in either. Recognising revenue as the work is performed requires an estimate of how far the contract has progressed and what it will take to finish. That estimate is only as good as the time records behind it.

The reverse problem comes with deposits and advance billing. Money received before the work is done is a liability, not revenue, and releasing it on the invoice date produces a profit pattern unrelated to how the business actually performed.

## Subscriptions and deferred revenue

Software and information businesses often bill annual subscriptions or support contracts up front. Until the service period is delivered, the unearned portion sits on the balance sheet as deferred revenue. A company growing quickly can show a large cash balance and a large deferred revenue liability at the same time, and a reader who sees only the cash will misjudge the position. Presenting the deferral clearly explains a balance sheet that would otherwise look stronger than it is.

## Equipment, inventory and the difference from CCA

Technical, health and manufacturing companies carry equipment that lasts several years: computers and servers, test and lab equipment, clinic equipment, production machinery. On the statements it is amortised over its useful life. On the T2 it is depreciated through capital cost allowance by class. The two numbers are usually different, and that is expected; the reconciliation between them is part of the year-end file.

Companies that build or assemble products also hold inventory. Counting it at the year-end date, valuing it at the lower of cost and net realisable value, and writing down obsolete components are all judgements that move profit directly. For an electronics business with fast-changing parts, obsolescence is the item a lender asks about first.

## SR&ED credits receivable

A Richmond Hill technology company that files an SR&ED claim on Form T661 often has a refundable credit owing to it at the year-end date but not yet received. How that receivable is measured and presented — and how it relates to the expenditures it reimburses — affects both reported profit and working capital. A company with a large pending refund can look short of cash and still be solvent, and the note explains why. Government grants for the same work are presented separately and usually reduce the claim base. See [Richmond Hill tech startups](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tech-startup-accountant-richmond-hill) for the claim itself.

## Shareholder loans and related parties

In an owner-managed company the line between the owner and the business blurs: personal expenses paid by the company, the owner lending money in or drawing it out, a holding company that owns the equipment and charges rent. Each of those belongs on the statements as a shareholder or related-party balance, with the terms disclosed. A shareholder loan that is not repaid within one year after the company’s year-end is generally taxed as the owner’s income, so the balance is reviewed before the statements are finalised. The [shareholder loan tracker](https://www.everstonecpa.com/shareholder-loan-tracker) keeps it visible during the year.

## Accrued liabilities people forget

Vacation pay earned but not taken, a bonus declared before year-end, HST collected but not yet remitted, and corporate tax owing on the year’s profit are all obligations at the year-end date. Leaving them out flatters the balance sheet and is one of the first things a lender’s analyst adds back. Contractors who are employees in substance create a hidden liability for unremitted [payroll deductions](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/payroll.html); the [worker classification](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/employee-vs-contractor-cra-worker-classification) guide explains the tests.

## What a compilation covers, and what it does not

A CSRS 4200 **compilation engagement** assembles and presents information management supplies. The accountant does not test the revenue judgements, confirm receivables or express any opinion or conclusion. It is neither an audit nor a review, and the statements carry a report saying so.

For most owner-managed Richmond Hill companies a compilation is the right product. The point at which it stops being enough is usually a transaction or a counterparty: a larger credit facility, an investor, a sale, or a funding program that asks for assurance. Each brings a reader who wants comfort over judgements a compilation does not test. Deciding the level before the year-end beats reopening closed periods. [Compilation versus review](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-vs-review-engagement) sets out the difference.

## Working with a remote CPA

EverStone works fully online. There is no Richmond Hill office. Engagements run by secure document exchange, video and e-signature, and the statements and the T2 come from one set of closed books, so the figures agree. This suits incorporated consultancies, technical and engineering firms, software and electronics companies, health practices and independent professionals operating through a corporation.

The year-end this all feeds into is [our Richmond Hill corporate tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-richmond-hill).

None of this works on records that are behind, which is what [bookkeeping in Richmond Hill](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-richmond-hill) keeps current.

Where a lender or an agreement calls for assurance rather than a compilation, the next question is [what readiness for that engagement involves](https://www.everstonecpa.com/audit-review-readiness).

Where the questions are about forecasting, margins and funding rather than presentation, see [fractional CFO support for Richmond Hill companies](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cfo-services-richmond-hill).

Common questions

## Richmond Hill year-end statement questions

**Does my Richmond Hill corporation need financial statements?**

Every corporation filing a T2 reports its balance sheet and income statement through the GIFI schedules, so the figures have to exist either way. Formal compiled statements are what a bank, landlord, investor or funding program usually asks to see. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**When is contract or milestone revenue recognised?**

As the work is performed, not when the milestone invoice is issued. That needs an estimate of progress supported by time records. Deposits and advance billings are a liability until the work is done.

**Why is amortisation on my statements different from CCA on my T2?**

Statements spread an asset’s cost over its useful life; the tax return uses capital cost allowance rates set by class. The two differ, and the difference is reconciled in the year-end file.

**How is an SR&ED refund shown on the statements?**

As a receivable where the claim is reasonably assured, with the credit related to the expenditures it reimburses. A note explains it, which matters when a pending refund makes cash look tight.

**Does a compilation test my numbers?**

No. A compilation presents what management provides and gives no assurance. A counterparty that wants comfort over revenue or inventory will ask for a review or an audit instead.

**Do you have a Richmond Hill office?**

No. Year-end statements are prepared remotely from closed books, reviewed with you by video and issued electronically. Nothing about the work requires a local office.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Richmond Hill?**

The fee is the same in Richmond Hill as anywhere else EverStone works. Statements on their own are quoted after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450 to $650 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Richmond Hill itself?**

Yes. Year-end statements for businesses in Oak Ridges, Aurora, Markham, Vaughan and the rest of York Region are prepared exactly as for Richmond Hill ones. Toronto companies are covered on the [Toronto accountant page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-toronto).
