# Financial statements for *Winkler* manufacturers, farms and growing firms

A fabrication shop, a farm corporation and a growing retailer have the same reporting problem at year-end: a lender or equipment financer wants statements that show what the business owns, what it owes and whether it can carry the debt. For most of them, the judgements that matter are about equipment and inventory. EverStone prepares [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) online. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Winkler businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-winkler).

**Quick answer:** Year-end statements for a Winkler owner-managed corporation are normally a CSRS 4200 compilation. The recurring judgements are how equipment is depreciated, whether a major repair is capitalized or expensed, and how inventory and work in process are measured. For a one-owner Winkler corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with financial statements run from $450 to $650 a month.

Filings include T4 slips, Schedule 1, Schedule 50, the CCA schedule and the GIFI schedules 100, 125 and 141 built from the statements.

## Why Winkler statements are mostly about hardware

Winkler has grown from agricultural roots into the industrial centre of southern Manitoba, with manufacturing plants and foundries working alongside the farms of the surrounding Pembina Valley. The balance sheets that come out of that economy are heavy with equipment: presses, welders and CNC machines in a shop; combines, tractors, bins and trucks on a farm; delivery vehicles and fixtures in a retail or service business. Most of the judgements in the statements are about how that equipment is carried, and most of what a lender reads is about whether the debt against it is covered.

## Rebuild or repair: the entry that decides the year

A machine overhaul, an engine rebuild on a truck or a major refit of a production line can cost enough to change a small company’s reported profit on its own. Whether it is capital or expense depends on what it did. Spending that restores the asset to its expected condition is maintenance and goes to the income statement. Spending that extends the asset’s life or materially increases its output is capital and is depreciated over the extended period. The distinction is applied one item at a time, and the reasoning belongs in the file. Expensing everything understates the asset base and makes earnings volatile; capitalizing everything flatters profit and carries assets that no longer exist in the condition implied.

## Book depreciation is not CCA

The statements depreciate equipment over its useful life. The tax return claims capital cost allowance by class, at prescribed rates, from the date the asset is available for use. The two figures differ, and the difference is reconciled on Schedule 1 of the T2. A Winkler manufacturer that bought a qualifying machine late in the year may have a large CCA claim and a small book depreciation charge; a farm that sold a combine may have recapture on the tax side and a gain or loss on the statements. Keeping both registers accurate is what lets the statements and the T2 agree without a scramble.

## Inventory, parts and work in process

Plants and farms both carry inventory that is easy to under-record. A shop holds raw steel, purchased components, partly built jobs and finished product waiting to ship. A parts room holds real value that is often expensed on purchase and never counted. A manufacturer’s work in process carries materials, labour and an allocation of production overhead, and absorbing that overhead on normal capacity rather than an unusually slow or busy year is what keeps unit cost stable. Farm inventory has its own rules, especially where the farm reports on the cash basis for tax. See the [inventory accounting](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/inventory-accounting-bc) guide and [year-end inventory counts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/year-end-inventory-count-canada).

## Costs that straddle the year-end

Several items cross the year-end date in nearly every Winkler file. Insurance and licences bought partway through the year are prepaid and release over the term they cover. Deposits paid on equipment not yet delivered are assets, not expenses. Customer deposits on custom orders are liabilities until the work is delivered. Holdbacks on construction contracts sit as receivables or payables. None is complicated, but together they move profit and the current ratio, and missing them makes two consecutive years look inconsistent for no operational reason.

## What an equipment lender reads

Equipment and farm finance is secured against specific assets, so the reader is matching the debt schedule against the asset register. What matters is which assets secure which facilities, what remains unencumbered, and whether operating cash flow comfortably covers the total monthly obligation across every lender. Statements that show long-term debt as a single line, without a note breaking it out by facility with the current portion separated, cannot answer any of that. The note is the part an asset-based lender actually uses, and leaving it out guarantees a request for the detail before anything moves. See [lender readiness](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financing-and-lender-readiness).

## A compilation is not an audit or a review

A CSRS 4200 **compilation engagement** presents information the business supplies. The accountant does not count the inventory, inspect the equipment, confirm the loan balances or express any opinion. It is not an audit and it is not a review. A **review engagement** adds limited assurance through enquiry and analysis; an **audit** adds an opinion supported by evidence. Most owner-managed Manitoba businesses operate on compiled statements and their lenders accept them. The exceptions to check for are a credit facility whose covenant specifies a level, a shareholder agreement that requires one, or a pending sale. All three are knowable in advance. See [what a compilation engagement is](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-engagement-canada).

## Manitoba filings and remote delivery

Manitoba corporate income tax is collected federally, so a Manitoba corporation files the federal [T2](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html) rather than a separate provincial return, with retail sales tax and the Companies Office annual return handled through their own channels. The [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) page sets out current rates and thresholds. EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm with no Winkler office; engagements run online through secure file exchange, video calls and electronic signature. Asset registers, debt schedules and inventory counts move as files.

Common questions

## Winkler year-end statement questions

**Is a machine overhaul capital or an expense?**

It depends on what the work achieved. Restoring the machine to its expected operating condition is maintenance and is expensed. Work that extends its life or materially increases its capacity is capital and is depreciated. The reasoning should be documented item by item. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Why does depreciation in the statements differ from CCA?**

Book depreciation follows the asset’s useful life; CCA follows prescribed tax classes and rates. The difference is reconciled on Schedule 1 of the T2, which is why both registers need to be kept accurately.

**Do I need to count the parts room at year-end?**

Yes, if the value is material. Parts expensed on purchase and never counted understate assets and put the cost in the wrong period.

**Will my lender accept compiled statements?**

Most lenders to owner-managed businesses do. Check the reporting covenant in each facility; where it specifies a review or an audit, that is a separate engagement and needs arranging before the year closes.

**Does Manitoba have a separate corporate income tax return?**

No. Manitoba corporate income tax is calculated within the federal T2. Retail sales tax and the Companies Office annual return are handled through their own channels.

**Is EverStone located in Winkler?**

No. Winkler engagements run entirely online by secure upload, e-signature and video meetings when useful. None of the work depends on being in the same town.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Winkler?**

The fee is the same in Winkler as anywhere else EverStone works. Statements on their own are quoted after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $450 to $650 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you prepare statements for businesses outside Winkler itself?**

Yes. Year-end statements for businesses in Morden, the RM of Stanley, Altona and Plum Coulee are prepared exactly as for Winkler ones, at the same fee.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Winkler corporation whose lenders accept compiled statements. Where a facility or a buyer requires a review or an audit, that is another engagement, and the first exchange works out which. The fee is then [quoted in writing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).
