# Financial statements for *Winnipeg* fleet and manufacturing businesses

A carrier running fifty power units and a plant running three production lines have the same core reporting problem. Most of the balance sheet is long-lived hardware, and almost every judgement that matters is about how that hardware is written down and when a repair becomes an asset. EverStone prepares [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada) remotely. It is part of [EverStone’s work for Winnipeg businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-winnipeg).

**Quick answer:** Year-end statements for a Winnipeg carrier or manufacturer are normally a CSRS 4200 compilation. The recurring judgements are how fleet and plant are depreciated, whether a major rebuild is capitalized or expensed, and how parts and work-in-process inventory are measured. For a one-owner Winnipeg corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with financial statements run from $500 to $700 a month.

Filings include T4 slips, Schedule 1 and Schedule 50.

Long-term debt on one line answers none of the questions being asked.

## Rebuild or repair: the entry that decides the year

An engine rebuild, trailer refurbishment or line overhaul can change a small company’s profit on its own. Whether it is capital or expense depends on what it did. Restoring the asset to its expected condition is maintenance and is expensed. Extending its life or materially increasing output or efficiency is capital, depreciated over the extended period.

The test is applied item by item, with the reasoning on file. Expensing everything understates assets and makes earnings volatile; capitalizing everything flatters profit and carries assets that no longer exist as implied. Neither survives a careful reader.

## Componentization: one asset or several

A tractor unit does not wear out evenly. The engine, drivetrain and trailer have different lives, as do a machine’s frame, tooling and controls. Where components have significantly different useful lives, depreciating them separately gives a far more accurate carrying value.

It also gets disposal right, because a recently replaced component is not written off with a worn-out chassis. The extra record-keeping is modest for a business that tracks units individually, and for any fleet it makes depreciation mean something.

## Parts, materials and work in process

Carriers and plants both under-record inventory. A parts room holds real value that is often expensed on purchase and never counted, understating assets and misplacing expense. A manufacturer also holds work in process: partly converted goods carrying materials, labour and allocated production overhead.

That overhead allocation is the judgement. Absorbing fixed production costs on normal capacity, not an unusually slow or busy year, keeps unit cost stable and comparable. Get it wrong and cost moves between balance sheet and income statement with no change in the business. See the [inventory accounting](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/inventory-accounting-bc) guide.

## Fuel, licensing and costs that straddle the year end

Interjurisdictional carriers pay fuel tax through a pooled quarterly arrangement, so a receivable or payable almost always exists at year-end. Annual plates and licences bought mid-year are prepaid, released over the term they cover.

None is complicated, but together they are common transport year-end omissions that move profit and the current ratio and make two consecutive years look inconsistent.

## What an asset-based lender reads

Equipment and fleet finance is secured against specific units, so the reader is reconciling the debt schedule against the asset register. What matters is which units secure which facilities, what remains unencumbered, and whether operating cash flow comfortably covers the total monthly obligation across every lender involved.

Statements showing long-term debt as one line, without a note by facility and the current portion separated, cannot answer that. That note is what an asset-based lender actually uses; without it, expect a request for the detail before anything moves.

## A compilation is not an audit or a review

A CSRS 4200 **compilation engagement** presents information the business supplies. The accountant does not inspect the fleet, count the parts room, confirm the loan balances or express any opinion or conclusion. It is not an audit and it is not a review. A **review engagement** would add limited assurance through enquiry and analytical procedures; an **audit** would add an opinion supported by evidence.

Most owner-managed Manitoba carriers and manufacturers use compiled statements, and their lenders accept them. Check for exceptions: a lease or credit facility covenant specifying a level, a shareholder agreement requiring one, or a pending sale. All are knowable in advance, and none can be met after year-end without a separate engagement.

## Manitoba filings and remote delivery

Manitoba corporate income tax is collected federally, so a Manitoba corporation files the federal [T2](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/corporations/corporation-income-tax-return.html) rather than a separate provincial income tax return, with provincial credits and the retail sales tax handled through their own channels. The [Manitoba tax facts](https://www.everstonecpa.com/manitoba-tax-facts) page sets out the current rates and thresholds.

EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm with no Winnipeg location. Engagements run remotely through secure file exchange, video calls and electronic signature. This suits incorporated carriers and owner-operator fleets, warehousing and distribution businesses, food and industrial manufacturers and machine shops. ## What a year-end file contains

What a year-end file contains
Statements and the tax return come from one set of numbers — for a business operating in Winnipeg, Manitoba

| Component | What it shows |

| Balance sheet | What the corporation owns and owes at the year-end date |

| Income statement | Revenue and expenses over the fiscal year |

| Compilation engagement report | The CPA communication that accompanies compiled statements |

| T2 schedules | Schedules 100, 125 and 141, built from the same figures as the statements |

| Sales tax where you operate | 5% GST plus 7% Manitoba retail sales tax — two registrations, two returns |

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Winnipeg carrier or plant whose equipment lenders accept compiled statements. Where a facility or a buyer requires a review or an audit, that is another engagement, and the first call works out which. The fee is then [quoted in writing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## Remote financial statement work

EverStone works with Winnipeg businesses virtually. **There is no premises in Winnipeg, and nobody on the ground there.** Books reviewed during the year mean the year end is short.

An owner’s corporate and personal returns are decided together, and [personal tax in Winnipeg](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-winnipeg) is the other half.

The year end this all feeds into is [our Winnipeg corporate tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-winnipeg).

Where a lender or an agreement calls for assurance rather than a compilation, the next question is [audit and review readiness](https://www.everstonecpa.com/audit-review-readiness).

Common questions

## Winnipeg fleet and plant statement questions

**Is an engine rebuild capital or an expense?**

It depends on what the work achieved. Restoring expected operating condition is maintenance, expensed. Extending life beyond the original estimate or materially increasing capacity or efficiency is capital, depreciated over the extended life. Document the reasoning item by item. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Should I depreciate a truck as one asset?**

Not necessarily. Where major components — engine, drivetrain, trailer — have significantly different lives, depreciating them separately gives a more accurate carrying value and correct disposals. For any fleet the extra record-keeping is modest.

**Do I need to count the parts room at year end?**

Yes, if material. Parts expensed on purchase and never counted understate assets and misplace cost. A counted, valued parts inventory at year-end fixes both, and for a fleet the balance is usually larger than the owner expects.

**How should overhead be absorbed into work in process?**

On normal production capacity, not the actual output of an unusually slow or busy year. Absorbing on actual volume makes unit cost swing and shifts cost between balance sheet and income statement with no change in the business.

**Does Manitoba have a separate corporate income tax return?**

No. Manitoba corporate income tax is collected federally, so a Manitoba corporation files the federal T2 and the provincial tax is calculated within it. Provincial credits and retail sales tax are handled through their own channels. The Manitoba tax facts page sets out the current rates and thresholds.

**Is EverStone located in Winnipeg?**

No. Winnipeg engagements run remotely by secure upload, video and e-signature; asset registers, debt schedules and inventory counts move as files.

**What do year-end financial statements cost in Winnipeg?**

The fee is the same in Winnipeg as anywhere else EverStone works. Statements on their own are quoted after we review your enquiry. For a one-owner trades corporation, bookkeeping, payroll and the year-end T2 with statements together usually run $500 to $700 a month all-in. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Winnipeg itself?**

Yes. Steinbach, Selkirk and the surrounding Capital Region are handled exactly like Winnipeg, at the same fee.
