# GST/HST Calculator

Updated 8 October 2026

**Quick answer:** Add or back out GST/HST for any Canadian province in one tap. Handy for invoices, quotes and quick checks. Built by EverStone CPA.

**Charging the right rate on every invoice?** We set up sales tax in your accounting software, file the returns and claim every input tax credit, as part of bookkeeping from $325 a month. [Get My Fixed Quote](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online?service=monthly#enquiry-form)

The arithmetic is the easy part; which rate applies to a sale across a provincial line is not. [Ask about a specific invoice](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question).

Opens your own email app with the numbers filled in — add your question and a CPA replies, usually the same business day.

BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec also charge a separate [provincial sales tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#pst) (PST/RST/QST). Pick the “GST only” line for the federal amount, or the combined line where the sale also attracts the provincial tax at its general rate — many services do not. Estimate for convenience, not tax advice.

What this calculator answers
**How much GST or HST is in this amount — or how much do I add to it?**

Anyone invoicing, checking a supplier bill, or backing tax out of a total that was quoted tax-included. It cannot tell you whether the supply is taxable in the first place, which is the question that actually goes wrong.

## Estimated GST/HST: a worked example

These are the numbers already in the calculator above, so you can follow the arithmetic against the result it is showing.

Worked example
The values the page loads with: $1,000 at the 5% GST rate

| Step | Figure |

| Adding tax to $1,000 | $1,000 × 5% = $50.00 tax, $1,050.00 total |

| Extracting tax from $1,000 | $1,000 ÷ 1.05 = $952.38 before tax, $47.62 tax |

| Why they differ | The second treats the $1,000 as already including tax. Applying 5% to a tax-included total over-states the tax. |

## What it assumes, and where it stops

Every estimate rests on assumptions. These are the ones that would change your number most.

Assumptions and limits
Where this estimate stops being reliable

| Assumption | What it means for your number |

| The supply is taxable at the selected rate | Zero-rated supplies carry 0% but still allow input tax credits; exempt supplies carry no tax and allow none. The difference matters more than the arithmetic. |

| The province is the place of supply | The rate follows place-of-supply rules, not where your business is. A BC firm can be required to charge 13% on an Ontario supply. |

| BC PST is not included | PST is a separate provincial tax with its own registration and return, and it is not an input tax credit. |

How GST/HST works A rate converter, not a remittance figure.

## Understanding GST/HST in Canada

GST/HST is a tax on most goods and services in Canada. The rate you charge follows the **[place of supply](https://www.everstonecpa.com/glossary#place-of-supply)**, meaning where your customer is. That is 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, 13% HST in Ontario, 15% HST in the Atlantic provinces (14% in Nova Scotia since 2025), and 5% GST plus a separate provincial tax in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Once your taxable sales pass **$30,000** over four rolling quarters you must register, charge and [remit GST/HST](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-filing-services). The upside: you can then claim **input tax credits** for the GST/HST you paid on business expenses, which often means a smaller remittance, or a refund. Use the calculator above to add or remove tax for any province, then talk to us about registration and filing.

This calculator gives a general estimate for information only, not tax advice specific to your situation. Rates and rules change, and your result depends on details it can’t capture. We confirm the numbers for your circumstances once we review your enquiry.

Questions

## Good to know

**Do I need to charge GST/HST as a contractor or small business?**

Once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive quarters you must register for GST/HST and charge it. Many businesses register earlier to claim input tax credits. We handle registration and filing for you. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?**

GST is the 5% federal tax. In HST provinces (Ontario and the Atlantic provinces) the federal and provincial portions are combined into one tax. BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec keep a separate provincial sales tax (PST, RST or QST) on top of the 5% GST.

**What is the GST and PST in B.C.?**

5% GST plus 7% PST on most taxable goods and some services — 12% combined. They are separate taxes on separate returns: GST goes to the CRA, PST to the B.C. Ministry of Finance. Choose “British Columbia (5% GST + 7% PST = 12%)” above for the combined figure. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What is the HST rate in Nova Scotia?**

14% since April 1, 2025, when the province cut it from 15%. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador stay at 15%, and Ontario at 13%. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Which provinces charge HST?**

Five use the harmonized sales tax: Ontario at 13%, Nova Scotia at 14%, and New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador at 15%. The rest charge 5% GST, with a separate provincial tax in B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How do I calculate GST on a Canadian invoice?**

Multiply the pre-tax amount by the rate where the supply is made — usually where the customer is. $2,000 of work for an Alberta client is $100 GST; for an Ontario client it is $260 HST. Show the tax and your GST/HST number on the invoice. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**How do I read the result this calculator gives me?**

The result splits an amount into the tax portion and the total, using the rate for the province you pick. If you entered a price that already includes tax, the tax shown is the amount buried inside it, not an amount to add on top. Use the tax-included view when you are backing GST out of a receipt, and the tax-excluded view when you are quoting a client.

**What does the GST/HST calculator not account for?**

It does not account for input tax credits, the Quick Method, PST or RST that may apply on top of GST, or whether a particular sale is zero-rated or exempt. It also assumes the rate matches where the supply is considered to be made. Those factors change what you actually remit, so treat this as a rate converter, not a filing figure.

**Which rate applies if my client is in a different province than I am?**

Generally the rate follows where the supply is considered to be made, which for most goods and many services is the customer’s province, not yours. That is why an Abbotsford business invoicing an Ontario client often charges HST rather than GST. Place-of-supply rules differ by what you sell, so confirm the category before you set your invoice template.

**Does this tell me how much GST/HST I owe CRA?**

No. What you remit is the tax you collected minus the input tax credits you are entitled to claim on business purchases, and this calculator only handles the collected side. Two businesses with identical sales can owe very different amounts once ITCs are applied. Build your remittance from your books for the period, not from a single transaction.

**When should I have my GST/HST numbers checked?**

Get a second look before your first filing, after any change in what you sell or where you sell it, and any time CRA questions a return. Registration timing, ITC eligibility and zero-rated versus exempt treatment are the three places small businesses most often go wrong. Send an enquiry and you will get a fixed quote in writing before any work starts.
