# GST/HST filing in *Airdrie*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so an Airdrie business runs one registration and one return. That removes half the complexity and concentrates the risk in one place: whether your input tax credits are supported by records that hold up. EverStone files GST for [Airdrie businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-airdrie) remotely.

**Quick answer:** An Airdrie business selling within Alberta charges 5% GST and nothing else. Registration is mandatory once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive quarters, and returns are filed on the period the CRA assigns. A GST review turns almost entirely on input tax credit documentation. GST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

The CRA’s rate table records Alberta’s provincial sales tax as nil. An Airdrie business charges 5% GST on taxable sales within the province, holds one registration, files one return and deals with one administrator. There is no provincial tax buried in its input costs. Alberta does levy a separate tourism levy on accommodation, but that is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax, and it only concerns businesses that rent out rooms.

What that simplicity does is concentrate the exposure. In a two-tax province, a review can go wrong in several directions. In Alberta there is effectively one question, on the purchase side: **can you support the [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) you claimed?** The position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## What Airdrie businesses claim credits on

Airdrie’s economy leans towards construction, transportation and warehousing, manufacturing and professional services, and those are input-heavy businesses. A contractor claims GST on lumber, fixtures and equipment rental; a carrier on fuel, tires and repairs; a manufacturer on raw materials and machinery; a consultant on a vehicle and software. Because the credit on a large purchase can be substantial — a new truck, a skid steer, a production line — a single unsupported claim can be worth more than a year of small receipts. Equipment-heavy businesses in their first year, or in a year of expansion, often run a refund position, and refund returns are the ones most likely to be held for review before they are paid.

## What an input tax credit actually requires

A claim is not supported by the fact that money left the bank. The documentation has to identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, carry the supplier’s GST registration number. It has to show the tax or enough information to calculate it, and it has to describe the purchase well enough that someone else could tell what was bought. A card statement with a merchant name and a total meets none of those tests, and it is the most common category of claim disallowed on review.

Three further points recur. Where a supplier is not registered, there is no GST to claim, whatever the invoice says — registration numbers can be checked. Where something is used partly for personal purposes, such as a vehicle or a home office, only the business share is claimable, and the split should be recorded when the claim is made. And credits do not have to be claimed in the period the tax was paid; there is a window, so a missed credit found in time is often still recoverable. Our note on [what the CRA checks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks) covers the ground in more detail.

## The complication arrives at the border

An Airdrie supplier that ships to Calgary or Edmonton charges 5%. One that ships to an HST province charges that province’s rate, because the rate follows the place of supply rather than your address. Sell into a province with its own provincial sales tax and a second question arises about obligations there. A business that grows from local customers into national sales and keeps invoicing at 5% accumulates an under-collection across every affected invoice, and the seller, not the customer, owes the difference. Freight moving continuously into or out of Canada is often zero-rated, which matters to the carriers and warehouse operators along the corridor. The [sales tax hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) collects the guides that cover this.

## Reporting periods and the small supplier threshold

The return itself is the GST/HST return (form GST34, or the same lines filed electronically through My Business Account or GST/HST NETFILE), and the business number on it is the RT account opened at registration, usually alongside the RC59 authorization that lets us see the account. A new registrant is usually assigned an annual or quarterly reporting period based on its sales, and can elect to file more often — which a business expecting refunds often should. Under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold, registration is optional; registering early lets a new business recover GST on its start-up costs, but it also means charging GST to customers, which matters if they are consumers rather than businesses. That is a decision worth making deliberately. [Changing your filing frequency](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/change-gst-hst-filing-frequency) explains the election.

## The quick method, and when it fits

Smaller registrants can elect the quick method, which calculates the GST to remit as a set percentage of sales instead of tracking input tax credits on ordinary expenses. For a service business with few taxable inputs — a consultant, a bookkeeper, a home-based designer — it can be simpler and occasionally cheaper. For a business with heavy taxable purchases, such as a contractor or a carrier, it rarely helps, because those credits are worth more than the method saves. Capital purchases are still claimed separately. It is worth running both ways on a year of real figures before electing.

## Late returns and the catch-up

A business that falls behind on GST usually falls behind on everything else at the same time, and the CRA’s penalties for late filing compound with interest on the balance. Even where there is nothing to pay, filing late returns promptly stops the problem growing and often releases refunds that have been sitting unclaimed. We bring overdue GST returns current oldest period first, from reconciled books, and deal with any CRA correspondence that has built up. [What late filing costs](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/late-gst-filing-penalties-canada) sets out the penalty mechanics.

## What is covered

- GST registration, or review of your existing reporting period
- Returns prepared and filed on your assigned schedule
- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them
- Supplier registration status confirmed where a large claim depends on it
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Rates checked against place of supply for any sales made outside Alberta
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA correspondence handled

## Fully online, no office visits

EverStone is fully virtual. There is no Airdrie office and no office visits. Records arrive through secure upload, returns are reviewed by email or a short video call, and filings are approved by e-signature. One accountant holds the file, which keeps the documentation standard consistent from one period to the next rather than tightening only after a question is asked. See [bookkeeping in Airdrie](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-airdrie) for the monthly side.

How it works

## From enquiry to filed return

1

2

### Records by upload

Sales and purchase records, with invoices for anything large. We flag credits that need better support before filing.

3

### Filed and reconciled

The return is filed electronically and tied back to the ledger, so the year-end T2 and AT1 start from agreed figures.

## What it costs

GST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping, which starts from $300 a month. If you only need GST returns prepared from books someone else keeps, the fee is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. See the [published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

Common questions

## Airdrie GST questions

**Is there a provincial sales tax in Airdrie?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax. A separate tourism levy applies to accommodation, but it is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**When does an Airdrie business have to register for GST?**

Once taxable sales pass $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that you are a small supplier and registration is optional, which can still make sense if your customers are businesses and you have start-up costs to recover.

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including its GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the tax or the information needed to calculate it, and what was bought. A card statement showing a merchant and a total does not meet those requirements.

**What rate do I charge on sales outside Alberta?**

The rate for the place of supply, which generally follows the customer. Selling into an HST province means charging that province’s rate rather than 5%; under-collecting leaves the seller owing the difference.

**What does GST filing cost in Airdrie?**

It is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month. Stand-alone returns are quoted in writing. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you file GST for businesses outside Airdrie itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Crossfield, Balzac, Carstairs, Irricana and across Rocky View County file on the same schedule and at the same fee. There is no office to visit; it all runs online.
