# GST/HST filing in *Aldergrove*

Two sales taxes, two registration thresholds, and they are nowhere near each other. A small Aldergrove business can be comfortably below the federal line while already required to register provincially, or the reverse. EverStone sorts out which applies and files both for [Aldergrove businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-aldergrove), remotely.

**Quick answer:** For Aldergrove businesses, federal GST registration becomes mandatory above $30,000 of taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters. British Columbia sets its own separate test: a small seller with gross retail sales of $10,000 or less in the previous twelve months can generally skip [PST](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst) registration, subject to exceptions.

The work covers the GST/HST return (the GST34), input tax credits, the filing frequency, instalments where they apply and the notice of assessment that follows.

Two governments, two aims, two entirely unrelated tests.

## Two thresholds that have nothing to do with each other

Owners assume that being too small for one sales tax means too small for the other. Not in BC: the two taxes come from different governments with different aims and separate tests.

The federal test uses **taxable revenue**: registration is mandatory above $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, a rolling window. The provincial test uses **gross retail sales**: a *small seller* with $10,000 or less in the past twelve months, expecting the same ahead, can generally skip PST registration. A $28,000 service business may need neither; a retailer with $25,000 of goods sales needs PST but not yet GST.

## The small seller position has real costs attached

Skipping PST registration suits a hobby-scale operation, but two caveats matter for a growing one. **Certain vendor types cannot qualify as small sellers regardless of sales volume**, so check what you sell, not just the number. And, often missed, **a small seller pays PST on its own inventory purchases**; voluntary registration lets you buy for resale exempt with a PST number, often worth more than the paperwork. Our [BC PST guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-pst-small-business-guide) covers the detail.

GST is similar. Below $30,000 you may stay unregistered but recover no GST on purchases. With significant equipment or start-up costs, voluntary registration turns that tax into a credit, and registered customers pay your GST at no real cost.

## Once you are in, the calendars are separate too

Registration is not the end of the divergence. [GST/HST reporting periods](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) are assigned by the CRA based on annual taxable supplies. Monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after the period ends. Annual filers file and pay three months after their fiscal year-end, so March 31 for a corporation with a December 31 year-end. The exception is a sole proprietor with a December 31 year-end, who files by June 15 with the balance due April 30.

PST runs on the BC Ministry of Finance’s schedule, and PST on inputs generally is not recovered, unlike GST, which returns as an [input tax credit](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html). Federal deadlines are on the [GST deadlines page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-filing-deadlines); both rates are on the [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts). That split is why the GST/PST filing Fraser Valley businesses handle runs on two calendars, and Aldergrove is no exception.

## What is covered

- Testing your position against both the federal and provincial thresholds
- Registration where required, or voluntary registration where it pays
- Confirming whether the small seller exemption is even available to your vendor type
- GST/HST returns filed on your assigned reporting period
- PST returns filed on the Ministry of Finance schedule where you are registered
- Input tax credits claimed on purchases, including start-up costs
- Both filings reconciled to your records each period

## Remote, and not in Aldergrove

EverStone serves small businesses here online: a video call to confirm which registrations apply, secure exchange for records, e-signature for filings. An owner-operator saves half a day on something that takes twenty minutes done properly. See [how fees are set](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) before you commit.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Aldergrove business that is registered, or about to be, and wants the return filed on the right frequency with the input tax credits actually claimed. It is not the right fit if you want someone to press submit on figures nobody has reconciled: a GST return is only ever as good as the books behind it.

## Remote GST/HST filing

EverStone is a fully virtual, one-CPA firm serving Aldergrove online. **There is no Aldergrove office and no local staff.** Meetings are by video or phone and documents move securely by email and e-signature. Returns come from the same books as the corporate return, so GST sales match the statements.

Common questions

## Small business sales tax questions

Aldergrove sits inside a wider picture: [GST/PST filing in the Fraser Valley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-filing-fraser-valley) explains how the two returns fit together for any business in the valley.

**Are the GST and PST registration thresholds the same?**

No, and they are not close. Federal GST registration becomes mandatory above $30,000 of taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters. BC’s small seller test looks instead at gross retail sales of $10,000 or less over the previous twelve months, with an expectation of the same going forward. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Can any small BC business use the small seller exemption?**

No. Certain vendor types cannot qualify however small their sales, so check the exemption against what you sell rather than assume it from revenue. Do that check once, at the start.

**What does a small seller give up by not registering for PST?**

The ability to buy goods for resale exempt. A small seller pays PST on its own inventory purchases, which sits in the cost of goods and compresses margin. Registering voluntarily is often worth more than the administration it adds once inventory purchases become meaningful.

**Should a business under $30,000 register for GST anyway?**

Often, especially with large equipment or start-up purchases, since registration makes their GST recoverable. If your customers are registered, the tax costs them nothing, making it nearly one-sided.

**Do the two returns share a deadline?**

No. The CRA assigns your GST/HST reporting period by annual taxable supplies; PST returns follow the Ministry of Finance’s schedule. Keeping both on one calendar stops one lapsing while the other is filed.

**Is there an EverStone office in Aldergrove?**

No. Aldergrove businesses are served remotely by video call, secure document exchange and e-signature, the same way as clients elsewhere in BC.

**What does GST/HST filing cost in Aldergrove?**

Nothing about an Aldergrove address changes the fee. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month. A standalone return is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Aldergrove itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Otter, Glen Valley, Bradner and the rest of Langley Township file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Aldergrove businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
