# GST/HST filing in *Calgary*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a Calgary business has one return, and all the risk sits in one place: input tax credits backed by records that survive a look. EverStone files GST for [Calgary businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-calgary) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Calgary business selling only within the province collects 5% GST and nothing else. There is one registration, one return and no second administrator, which means the whole of a sales tax review turns on input tax credit documentation. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

A statement line showing a merchant and a total meets none of these.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

Alberta has no provincial sales tax (a nil provincial rate in the CRA’s table), so a business selling only in Alberta charges 5% GST: one registration, return and administrator, and no unrecoverable provincial tax in its costs. The tourism levy on accommodation is a specific charge, not a general sales tax.

That simplicity concentrates the risk. In Alberta there is effectively one review question, on the purchase side: **can you support the [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) you claimed?** With no provincial layer, the credit side is where a whole GST review lands. The position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## What an input tax credit actually requires

Money leaving the bank does not support a claim. The record must identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, show its GST registration number. It must show the tax or enough to calculate it, and describe what was bought. A credit card statement with a merchant name and total meets none of those tests, and it is by far the most common claim disallowed on review.

Three more points recur. An unregistered supplier means no GST to claim, whatever the invoice says; registration numbers can be verified. Partly personal expenses allow only the business share, recorded at the time, not rebuilt under pressure. And a missed credit can often still be claimed within the window. See our note on [what the CRA checks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks).

## The complication arrives at the border

Alberta’s simplicity ends when you sell outward. The rate follows the place of supply, so a Calgary business selling into an HST province charges that province’s rate, not 5%. Selling into a province with its own sales tax raises the question of obligations there too. A business that expands nationally but keeps invoicing at 5% builds an under-collection on every affected invoice, and the seller, not the customer, owes the difference. The [Sales tax for Canadian business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) annotates the guides on this.

## What is covered

- GST registration, or review of your existing reporting period
- Returns prepared and filed on your assigned schedule
- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them
- Supplier registration status confirmed where a claim depends on it
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Rates checked against place of supply for any sales made outside Alberta
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA correspondence handled

## Remote, with no office visits

EverStone is a sole practitioner CPA firm that works online. There is no Calgary office and no Alberta location. Records arrive by secure exchange, returns are reviewed on a video call, and filings are approved by e-signature. One accountant holds the file, so the documentation standard stays consistent every period, not just after a question is asked.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Alberta corporation that charges GST and wants the filing handled. It does not fit a business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold: registering early is a decision worth making deliberately, and [worth an enquiry first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online).

## What happens when you get in touch

An Alberta GST file is onboarded the same way as one next door, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you do, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.

Common questions

## Calgary GST questions

**Does Alberta have a provincial sales tax?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax (a nil rate in the CRA table). The tourism levy on accommodation is a specific charge, not a general sales tax. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question).

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including the GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the amount of tax or the information needed to calculate it, and the nature of the supply. A card statement showing a merchant and a total does not meet those requirements.

**Can I claim GST charged by an unregistered supplier?**

No. If the supplier is not registered, there is no valid GST to claim, whatever the invoice shows. Verifying registration numbers before claiming prevents an entirely avoidable disallowance. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**What if I forgot to claim a credit in the right period?**

Input tax credits can be claimed after the period the tax became payable, within a window. Finding a missed one in time is the constraint, so review purchase records periodically.

**What rate do I charge selling outside Alberta?**

The rate for the place of supply, which generally follows the customer. Selling into a harmonized province means charging that province’s rate rather than 5%. Continuing to invoice at the Alberta rate creates an under-collection that the seller, not the customer, ends up owing.

**Is there an EverStone office in Calgary?**

No. The firm works online, and serves Calgary businesses entirely remotely through video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature. No Alberta location exists or is planned.

**Do you work with businesses outside Calgary itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Calgary businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
