# GST/HST filing in *Edmonton*

Buy a piece of equipment in Alberta and the entire tax on it comes back. There is no provincial layer to absorb. How quickly it comes back is decided by a [reporting period](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) most Edmonton businesses were assigned rather than chose. EverStone files GST for [Edmonton businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-edmonton) remotely, on a written scope.

**Quick answer:** In Edmonton, because Alberta levies no provincial sales tax, the full tax paid on a capital purchase is recoverable federally with nothing left stranded in the cost. A registrant can often elect to file more frequently than required, which converts a large equipment credit from an annual event into a prompt refund. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

The work covers the GST/HST return (the GST34), input tax credits, the filing frequency, instalments where they apply and the notice of assessment that follows.

An annual filer can wait more than a year for a credit already earned.

## In Alberta, the whole tax on an asset comes back

Capital purchases show Alberta’s advantage. Where a provincial sales tax applies, a machine, vehicle or fit-out carries a generally non-recoverable provincial component that sits in capital cost and depreciates slowly. In Alberta, a registrant pays 5% GST on equipment and claims all of it as an **[input tax credit](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html)**, stranding nothing in the asset.

For Edmonton’s industrial, contracting, manufacturing and institutional suppliers, where one purchase can be a meaningful share of a year’s profit, that is real cash. The credit is generally claimable when the tax becomes payable, not when financing is paid off; waiting defers your own money for nothing.

## Your reporting period decides how fast the refund arrives

Reporting frequency is assigned on annual taxable supplies, but it is not fixed: a registrant can generally **elect to file more frequently than required**. For a business usually in a refund position, filing monthly rather than quarterly, or quarterly rather than annually, gets tax on purchases back sooner.

The cost is more returns, modest with clean books. Monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after the period. Annual filers wait three months after fiscal year-end (June 15 for a sole proprietor with a December 31 year-end), which can exceed a year for an early purchase. Planning a large capital program? Review the reporting period before the invoices land. The [GST deadlines page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-filing-deadlines) lists deadlines by frequency.

## The instalment obligation annual filers do not expect

Annual filing has a condition most people learn from a notice. If an annual filer’s **net tax for the previous fiscal year was $3,000 or more**, the CRA expects quarterly instalments, each generally a quarter of last year’s net tax, due one month after each fiscal quarter. Missing them means instalment interest even if the balance is paid on time.

This mostly bites businesses moving from refunds to payables, as when a heavy capital year gives way to a strong trading year. Read our note on [instalments for annual filers](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-instalments-annual-filers-canada) before choosing annual filing.

## What is covered

- Reporting period reviewed and, where it helps, changed by election
- Returns prepared and filed on your reporting schedule
- Input tax credits on capital purchases claimed in the correct period
- Refund claims supported by documentation before they are filed
- Instalment obligations calculated and diarised for annual filers
- Place of supply checked on any sales made outside Alberta
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA follow-up on refunds handled

## Remote, with no Edmonton office

EverStone is a one-CPA practice working online, with no Edmonton office. Records arrive by secure exchange, returns are reviewed by video call, and filings are approved electronically. Refund claims draw closer attention than payments, so what matters is having the support assembled before filing, not after a query. That is a process question, not a location one.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Edmonton business that is registered, or about to be, and wants returns on the right frequency with input tax credits claimed, not unreconciled figures submitted: a return is only as good as the books. Filing and bookkeeping are both on [the published fee list](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## What happens when you get in touch

GST/HST is federal, so an Edmonton filing runs the same way as one filed from anywhere else.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you sell, where your customers are, and what [reporting frequency](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-filing-deadlines) the CRA currently has you on.

- **Frequency and method checked.** Whether your reporting period still suits your revenue, and whether [the quick method](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-quick-method-canada) would leave you better off than claiming credits line by line.

- **Filed on time, every period.** The return prepared from reconciled books and filed before the deadline, with instalments tracked if you are an annual filer.

Common questions

## Edmonton GST questions

**Is the tax on equipment fully recoverable in Alberta?**

The GST paid is claimed as an input tax credit as usual, and with no provincial sales tax in Alberta nothing non-recoverable sits in the asset, unlike provinces with a separate retail sales tax. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**When can I claim the credit on a financed asset?**

Generally for the period the tax becomes payable, not when financing is paid off. Waiting until the asset is paid for just postpones a refund you were already owed, sometimes by years.

**Can I change how often I file GST returns?**

A registrant can generally elect to file more frequently than required. For a business regularly in a refund position that shortens the gap between paying tax on purchases and recovering it, which is worth more than the modest additional administration it creates.

**Why do annual filers get instalment notices?**

Because where net tax for the previous fiscal year was $3,000 or more, the CRA expects quarterly instalments during the year rather than a single payment at filing. Each is generally a quarter of last year’s net tax, and missing them creates interest even if the full balance is eventually paid on time.

**Does a refund claim get looked at more closely?**

Refunds generally draw more scrutiny than payments, so assemble the support before filing, not after a query. For a capital-heavy business that means invoices and supplier details organized at purchase.

**Is there an EverStone office in Edmonton?**

No. The firm serves Edmonton businesses entirely remotely through video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature. No Alberta office exists or is planned.

**Is there PST in Alberta?**

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so an Edmonton business charges 5% GST on taxable sales in Alberta, and recovers the GST it pays on business costs as input tax credits. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What does GST/HST filing cost in Edmonton?**

Nothing about an Edmonton address changes the fee. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month. A standalone return is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Edmonton itself?**

Yes. Registrants in St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc and Nisku file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Edmonton businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
