**Quick answer:** A Langley business selling goods generally collects 5% GST for the Canada Revenue Agency and 7% [PST](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst) for the BC Ministry of Finance. The two are separate registrations with separate returns, separate rules about what is taxable, and separate consequences for getting the collection wrong. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

Langley GST filing comes with bookkeeping from $325 a month. The work covers the GST/HST return (the GST34), input tax credits, the filing frequency, instalments where they apply and the notice of assessment that follows.

One sale, two independent answers, two governments.

## GST/HST and PST filing in Langley: two systems, one transaction

BC is not harmonized, which hits goods sellers hardest. The 5% GST is federal, broad and recoverable by registrants through [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html). The 7% PST is provincial, narrower — mainly goods and listed services — and generally *not* recoverable. One sale can attract both, one or neither, decided separately for each tax.

For a Langley dealership, wholesaler or retailer, the usual failure is a point-of-sale system configured years ago and never revisited as the product mix changed. A wrong tax code stays invisible until collections are reconciled to returns. The [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts) tables both rates with sources.

## Collecting PST is a duty, not an option

The seller collects PST as agent of the province. Failing to charge it leaves the seller owing tax it never collected, out of spent margin. GST errors with a registered business customer are often neutral, since the customer recovers it; uncollected PST on retail sales is simply gone.

## Over-collecting PST is the same problem in reverse

Over-collecting PST on exempt items is the mirror problem: money that must be refunded or remitted. Both come from a catalogue whose tax treatment was never reviewed as a whole. Review it once and record the reasoning. Our [BC PST guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/bc-pst-small-business-guide) covers registration, the small seller position and the categories.

## Two returns, two schedules, one reconciliation

The filings do not line up. [GST/HST reporting periods](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) are monthly, quarterly or annual, with monthly and quarterly filers due one month after period-end. PST follows the Ministry of Finance’s own schedule. Treated as unrelated chores, neither gets reconciled, and year-end shows collections that match neither.

Reconcile both to the same sales records at once: taxable sales by category, tax collected by type, tax remitted by return, differences explained. That turns a sales tax review into a document request. Federal deadlines are on the [GST filing deadlines page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-filing-deadlines).

## What is covered

- GST/HST and PST registration, or review of existing registrations
- Product and service categories reviewed for correct tax treatment under each system
- GST/HST returns filed on your assigned reporting period
- PST returns filed on the Ministry of Finance schedule
- Input tax credits claimed on purchases, including capital assets
- Both filings reconciled to sales records in a single exercise
- Correspondence with the CRA and the Ministry of Finance handled

## Remote, and not in Langley

There is no EverStone office in Langley. We work online: point-of-sale exports and purchase records arrive electronically, returns are reviewed by video and approved by e-signature, which suits an owner on the shop floor. One CPA holds both tax systems, which keeps them from drifting apart.

Businesses that also want [Langley corporate returns](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-langley) and [personal tax in Langley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-langley) can have both quoted together.

The companion page on [the Langley bookkeeping engagement](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-langley) and [getting the Langley returns filed](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-langley) covers that side of the work.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Langley business that is registered, or about to be, and wants returns filed on the right frequency with input tax credits claimed. Not if you want unreconciled figures submitted: a GST return is only as good as its books. Both are on [the published fee list](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

Common questions

## Langley sales tax questions

**Does a BC business need two sales tax registrations?**

Usually, if it sells goods. GST is registered with the CRA and PST with the BC Ministry of Finance, each with its own return and schedule, because BC never harmonized. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What happens if we did not charge PST on a taxable sale?**

The seller generally stays liable for tax it should have collected, paid from margin already spent. That makes under-collection worse than most GST mistakes.

**Is charging PST on an exempt item a problem?**

Yes. Tax collected in error is not the seller’s to keep; it must be refunded or remitted. Review your catalogue’s tax coding rather than trusting an old setup.

**Can a purchaser claim PST back the way they claim GST?**

No. BC PST has no input tax credit, so PST on business inputs is a cost; GST paid by a registrant is recoverable. Reflect that in pricing.

**Do the GST and PST returns have the same due dates?**

No. The CRA assigns monthly, quarterly or annual GST/HST periods, while PST follows the Ministry of Finance’s schedule. Track both on one calendar so neither is missed.

**Is there an EverStone office in Langley?**

No. The firm serves Langley businesses remotely through secure document exchange, video meetings and e-signature. No part of preparing and filing sales tax returns requires an in-person meeting.

**Do you work with businesses outside Langley itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Brookswood, Murrayville and Fort Langley file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Langley businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
