# GST/HST filing in *Leduc*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a Leduc business runs one registration and one return. For the equipment-heavy companies that make up so much of Leduc and Nisku, that concentrates the risk in one place: large input tax credits on trucks, machinery, parts and fuel, and whether the records behind them hold up. EverStone files GST for [Leduc businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-leduc) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Leduc business selling only within the province collects 5% GST and nothing else. There is one registration, one return and one administrator, which means a GST review turns almost entirely on input tax credit documentation — and on the rate charged when you sell outside Alberta. For a Leduc business, GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

There is no provincial sales tax in Alberta, which the CRA’s own rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A business selling only within Alberta charges 5% GST and nothing else — one registration, one return, one administrator, and no non-recoverable provincial tax buried in its costs. Alberta does levy a separate tourism levy on accommodation, but that is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax.

What that simplicity does is concentrate the exposure on the purchase side. Leduc’s economy leans on manufacturing, energy services, transportation and warehousing, and food processing, and businesses in those sectors buy a lot: equipment, vehicles, steel and parts, fuel, packaging, subcontract work. Each purchase carries GST that a registrant can recover as an [input tax credit](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html). On a large equipment purchase the credit is substantial, and large credits are what a CRA review looks at first. The position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## What an input tax credit actually requires

A claim is not supported by the fact that money left the bank. The documentation has to identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, carry the supplier’s GST registration number. It has to show the amount of tax or enough information to calculate it, and it has to describe the supply well enough that someone else can tell what was bought. A credit card statement showing a merchant name and a total meets none of those tests, and it is the most common category of claim disallowed on review.

Three further points recur in Leduc files. Where a supplier is not registered, there is no GST to claim regardless of what the invoice says, and registration numbers can be checked before claiming. Where a vehicle or other asset is used partly for personal purposes, only the business share is claimable, and the apportionment should be recorded when the claim is made rather than reconstructed later. And credits do not have to be claimed in the period the tax was paid: there is a window, so a missed credit found in time is often still recoverable. [What the CRA checks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks) covers the ground in more detail.

## Refund periods and the review that follows

A Leduc company that buys a fleet of trucks, a large press or a building in the same period it has modest sales can end up with a GST return showing a refund. That is legitimate, and it is also the situation most likely to draw a pre-assessment review before the refund is released. The answer is preparation: invoices for the large purchases filed with the return working papers, financing and lease documents on hand, and the purchase coded to the right asset account. A review that can be answered in one reply releases the refund quickly; one that needs a search through a year of email does not.

## The complication arrives at the border

The one place Alberta’s simplicity ends is when you sell outward. The rate follows the place of supply rather than your address, so a Leduc business shipping product into an HST province charges that province’s rate, not 5%. Sell goods or certain services into a province with its own separate sales tax and a second question arises about whether you have obligations there as well. Fabricators shipping to customers in other provinces, and service firms sending crews and equipment out of Alberta, are the usual cases. A business that keeps invoicing at 5% after its customers move outside the province accumulates an under-collection across every affected invoice, and the seller, not the customer, owes the difference. The [sales tax hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) annotates the guides that cover this.

## Reporting periods and the GST34

The CRA assigns each registrant a reporting period — monthly, quarterly or annual — based largely on revenue, and some businesses can elect a more frequent one. A company that expects regular refunds from heavy purchasing may prefer to file more often so the money comes back sooner. The return itself, the GST34 or its electronic equivalent, is short; the work is in the ledger behind it. We file on your schedule, reconcile each return to the general ledger, and keep the working papers with the file. [Changing your filing frequency](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/change-gst-hst-filing-frequency) explains the options.

## What is covered

- GST registration, or review of your existing reporting period
- Returns prepared and filed on your assigned schedule
- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them
- Supplier registration status confirmed where a large claim depends on it
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Rates checked against place of supply for any sales made outside Alberta
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA correspondence handled

## Remote, and there is no Leduc office

EverStone is a CPA firm that works fully online. There is no Leduc office. Leduc businesses are served by secure document exchange, video calls to review returns, and e-signature to approve them. One accountant holds the file, which keeps the documentation standard consistent from one period to the next rather than tightening only after the CRA asks a question.

Common questions

## Leduc GST questions

**Does Alberta have a provincial sales tax?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax, which the CRA rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A separate tourism levy applies to accommodation, but it is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including its GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the amount of tax or the information needed to calculate it, and the nature of the supply. A card statement showing a merchant and a total does not meet those requirements.

**We bought new equipment and our return shows a refund. Is that a problem?**

No, but expect the CRA may review it before releasing the refund. Keep the purchase invoices, financing documents and asset coding ready with the return, so the review can be answered in one reply.

**Can I claim GST charged by an unregistered supplier?**

No. If the supplier is not registered there is no valid GST to claim, whatever the invoice shows. Checking the registration number before claiming prevents a category of disallowance that is otherwise entirely avoidable. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**What rate do I charge selling outside Alberta?**

The rate for the place of supply, which generally follows the customer. Selling into a harmonized province means charging that province’s rate rather than 5%. Continuing to invoice at the Alberta rate creates an under-collection that the seller ends up owing.

**Is there an EverStone office in Leduc?**

No. The firm works online and serves Leduc businesses entirely remotely through video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature.

**Do you file GST for businesses outside Leduc itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Nisku, Leduc County, Beaumont and Devon file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Leduc businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Leduc business that charges GST and wants the filing handled properly. It does not fit a business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold: registering early is a decision worth making deliberately, and [worth an enquiry first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online).

## What happens when you get in touch

A Leduc GST file is onboarded the same way as any other Alberta file, and on the same fixed fee.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books set up or brought current, anything overdue scheduled oldest period first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
