# GST/HST filing in *Lethbridge*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a Lethbridge business runs one registration and one return. In a city built around food, farming, manufacturing and freight, the work is in the detail: which sales are zero-rated, which exports are documented, and whether every input tax credit is backed by a record that survives a look. EverStone files GST for [Lethbridge businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-lethbridge) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Lethbridge business selling within the province collects 5% GST and nothing else. Many Lethbridge businesses also make zero-rated sales — basic groceries, most farm products, exports — which carry 0% GST but still allow input tax credits, so their returns are often refunds. The whole of a review then turns on documentation. GST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

A statement line showing a merchant and a total meets none of these.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

There is no provincial sales tax in Alberta, which the CRA’s own rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A business selling only within Alberta charges 5% GST and nothing else — one registration, one return, one administrator, and no non-recoverable provincial tax buried in its input costs. Alberta does levy a separate tourism levy on accommodation, which matters to a hotel or short-term rental operator, but that is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax.

That simplicity concentrates the exposure. In a two-tax province, a review can go wrong in several directions. In Alberta, it usually goes wrong in two: the classification of sales, and the support for [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html). Both matter more in Lethbridge than in most cities, because so many businesses here make zero-rated sales and claim credits on large purchases of fuel, equipment and inputs. The position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## Zero-rated sales: 0%, not exempt

A zero-rated supply is taxable at 0%. The seller charges no GST, but because the sale is still taxable, the seller can claim input tax credits on the GST paid to make it. An exempt supply is different: no GST is charged, and no credits can be claimed on the costs behind it. The difference decides whether a business gets its GST back. See [zero-rated versus exempt supplies](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/zero-rated-vs-exempt-supplies-gst-hst-canada).

Three kinds of zero-rated sale are common around Lethbridge. Most basic farm products — grain, oilseeds and livestock raised for food, among others — are zero-rated, so a feedlot, a grain farm or a dairy charges no GST on them. Basic groceries are zero-rated, which matters to food processors and distributors whose product lines may mix zero-rated basics with taxable snacks, beverages or prepared items. And exports of goods are generally zero-rated, which matters to the manufacturers and processors shipping south. A business with sales in all three categories needs its invoicing set up to apply the right treatment line by line, not by habit.

## Exports, imports and the border

Lethbridge sits near the province’s only 24-hour commercial border crossing, and goods move both ways. On the way out, an export is zero-rated only if it is actually exported and the business can prove it, which means keeping bills of lading, export declarations and the customer’s foreign address with the invoice. An export with no shipping record looks, on review, like a domestic sale with GST not charged.

On the way in, GST is usually paid when goods are imported, through the customs process rather than on the supplier’s invoice. That GST is generally recoverable as an input tax credit by a registrant, but the support is the customs accounting document, not the US supplier’s invoice. Businesses that buy parts and equipment from the United States regularly should file the customs documents with the purchase every time.

## What an input tax credit actually requires

A claim is not supported by the fact that money left the bank. The documentation has to identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, carry the supplier’s GST registration number. It has to show the amount of tax or enough information to calculate it, and it has to describe the supply well enough that someone else can tell what was bought. A credit card statement showing a merchant name and a total meets none of those tests, and it is far and away the most common category of claim disallowed on review.

Three further points recur. Where a supplier is not registered, there is no GST to claim regardless of what the invoice says, and registration numbers can be verified. Where an expense is used partly for personal purposes — a truck that is also the family vehicle, an acreage shop that is also a garage — only the business share is claimable, and the apportionment should be recorded at the time. And credits do not have to be claimed in the period the tax was paid; there is a window, so a missed credit found in time is often still recoverable. Our note on [what the CRA checks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks) covers the ground in more detail.

## Refund returns and filing frequency

A business whose sales are mostly zero-rated is in a refund position most periods. That makes filing frequency a cash decision. An annual filer waits a full year for its money; a monthly or quarterly filer gets it back as it goes. A business can elect to file more often than it is required to, and for a farm or processor with large input costs that is often worth doing. The trade-off is more returns, which is why it belongs in the same conversation as the bookkeeping. See [changing your filing frequency](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/change-gst-hst-filing-frequency).

Refund returns also draw more attention. A return claiming a refund is more likely to be held for review before it is paid, and the review is resolved by the records described above. Businesses that file refunds every period should expect to be asked for support at some point and keep it ready.

## Selling outside Alberta

The one place Alberta’s simplicity ends is when you sell into other provinces. The rate follows the place of supply rather than your address, so a Lethbridge business shipping into an HST province charges that province’s rate, not 5%. Sell into a province with its own provincial sales tax and a second question arises about whether you have obligations there too. A business that keeps invoicing at 5% after it starts selling nationally accumulates an under-collection that the seller, not the customer, ends up owing. The [sales tax hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) collects the guides that cover this.

## What is covered

- GST registration, or review of your existing reporting period
- Returns prepared and filed on your assigned or elected schedule
- Zero-rated, exempt and taxable sales coded separately
- Export and import records matched to the sales and credits they support
- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA correspondence handled

## Remote, and there is no Lethbridge office

EverStone is a sole-practitioner CPA firm that works online. There is no Lethbridge office and no Alberta location. Lethbridge businesses are served entirely online — records arrive by secure upload, questions are handled by email or a short video call, and filings are approved by e-signature. One accountant holds the file, which keeps the documentation standard consistent from one period to the next rather than tightening only after a question is asked.

Common questions

## Lethbridge GST questions

**Does Alberta have a provincial sales tax?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax, which the CRA rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A separate tourism levy applies to accommodation, but it is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Is a zero-rated sale the same as an exempt one?**

No. Both carry no GST, but a zero-rated sale is still taxable at 0%, so the seller can claim input tax credits on its costs. An exempt sale allows no credits. Most basic farm products, basic groceries and exports are zero-rated.

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including the GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the amount of tax or the information needed to calculate it, and the nature of the supply. For imports, the customs accounting document is the support. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**How do I prove a sale was exported?**

Keep the shipping and export records with the invoice: bills of lading, export declarations and the customer’s foreign address. Without them, a zero-rated export can be treated as a domestic sale on which GST should have been charged.

**My GST returns are always refunds. Should I file more often?**

Often, yes. A business can elect a shorter reporting period than it is assigned, which brings refunds in sooner. The trade-off is more returns to prepare, so it is worth deciding together with the bookkeeping cadence.

**What rate do I charge selling outside Alberta?**

The rate for the place of supply, which generally follows the customer. Selling into a harmonized province means charging that province’s rate rather than 5%. Continuing to invoice at the Alberta rate creates an under-collection that the seller ends up owing.

**Is there an EverStone office in Lethbridge?**

No. The firm works online and serves Lethbridge businesses entirely remotely through email, video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature.

**Do you work with businesses outside Lethbridge itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Raymond, Taber and Lethbridge County file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Lethbridge businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits an Alberta business that charges GST, or makes zero-rated sales and wants its refunds, and wants the filing handled. It does not fit a business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold with nothing to recover: registering early is a decision worth making deliberately, and [worth an enquiry first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online).

## What happens when you get in touch

A Lethbridge GST file is onboarded the same way as any other, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free thirty-minute conversation.** What you sell, where it goes, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Sales coding checked, anything overdue scheduled oldest period first, and the next twelve months of deadlines set before they arrive.
