# GST/HST filing in *Maple Ridge*

When an out-of-province supplier does not charge you BC [PST](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst), the tax does not vanish — the obligation moves to you. Self-assessment is the quietest liability on a Maple Ridge balance sheet, because nothing on the invoice mentions it. EverStone files GST and PST for [Maple Ridge businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-maple-ridge) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Where a Maple Ridge business brings taxable goods or software into British Columbia and the seller did not collect provincial sales tax, the purchaser is generally required to self-assess and remit the PST directly. Federal GST continues to work through input tax credits, which is a fundamentally different mechanism. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month.

Filings include the T2, the GST/HST return and CCA.

The instinct GST builds is exactly wrong for PST.

## The tax nobody invoices you for

PST self-assessment never announces itself. A Maple Ridge business buys equipment from Ontario, a machine from the US or software from a vendor with no BC presence; the invoice shows no PST and looks settled. But where taxable goods or software come into British Columbia for use here and the seller did not collect PST, the purchaser generally must **self-assess and remit** it.

Nothing prompts it: no notice, no invoice line, no system flag. It surfaces years later in a Ministry of Finance review, applied to every out-of-province purchase in the period, with interest. Because PST is not recoverable, the assessment is a straight cost. Businesses buying meaningfully from outside the province should review this deliberately.

## GST works the opposite way, and the contrast matters

The two taxes behave differently, and confusing them causes the miss. GST is a value-added tax: a registrant charges it on sales, pays it on purchases and claims back the tax paid as an **[input tax credit](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html)**, so it sticks only to the final consumer. For a registrant, cross-border and interprovincial GST largely self-corrects.

BC PST is a retail sales tax with no credit mechanism, built to stick to the end user; self-assessment makes it stick even when the seller is beyond the province’s reach. The GST habit of recovering tax on inputs is exactly wrong for PST, and bookkeeping built on it misses the obligation every time. The two systems are tabled side by side on the [BC tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bc-tax-facts).

## Getting the input tax credit side right at the same time

The same purchase records answer both questions. An input tax credit needs the supplier’s details, including its GST registration number at the required thresholds, the tax amount and a description of the supply. A credit card statement in place of an invoice is the claim most often disallowed, and it is avoidable.

Two further points recur. For mixed business and personal expenses, only the business share is claimable, and the split should be recorded at the time of the claim. And credits need not be claimed in the period paid; within the window, a missed credit is often recoverable. The [Sales tax for Canadian business](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) collects the underlying guidance.

## What is covered

- GST/HST returns prepared and filed on your reporting period
- Out-of-province and imported purchases reviewed for PST self-assessment
- PST registration and returns where you also sell taxable goods
- Input tax credits claimed with documentation that supports them
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Missed credits identified and claimed within the available window
- Both filings reconciled to the purchase and sales ledgers

## Remote, with no Maple Ridge office

EverStone works online and has no location in Maple Ridge: secure exchange, email or video, and e-signature. Self-assessment is a records exercise, so meeting in person adds nothing. One CPA handles both filings, reviewing each purchase for input tax credits and PST at once.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

It suits a Maple Ridge business, registered or close to it, that wants the correct filing frequency and its input tax credits claimed in full. Unchecked figures are a poor fit: a return is only as sound as the bookkeeping under it. Filing and bookkeeping fees are on [the published fee list](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## Remote GST/HST filing

EverStone works with Maple Ridge businesses virtually. **There is no premises in Maple Ridge, and nobody on the ground there.** Returns come from the same bookkeeping as the corporate return, so GST sales match the financial statements.

Common questions

## Maple Ridge sales tax questions

The same two taxes apply across the region; our page on [GST/PST filing in the Fraser Valley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-filing-fraser-valley) sets out who registers for which.

**What is PST self-assessment?**

The purchaser’s duty to remit PST when taxable goods or software come into British Columbia for use here and the seller did not collect it. The invoice gives no sign, so it is often missed. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Does it apply to software and subscriptions from outside BC?**

It can. Software falls under BC PST, so a subscription from a vendor with no BC presence may need self-assessment, depending on what is acquired and how it is used. Review recurring vendors once, not every year.

**Can self-assessed PST be recovered later?**

No. BC PST has no input tax credit mechanism, so self-assessed PST is a cost, not recoverable. That is why an assessment years later hurts — there is no offsetting claim.

**What documentation supports a GST input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, the tax and the supply, with the supplier’s registration number at the applicable thresholds. A credit card statement alone generally falls short, making it the claim most often disallowed on review.

**What about expenses used partly for personal purposes?**

Only the business proportion is claimable. The apportionment should be recorded when the claim is made rather than reconstructed later, because a reasonable basis documented at the time is far easier to support than a precise-looking figure with no workings behind it.

**Do you have an office in Maple Ridge?**

No. EverStone serves Maple Ridge businesses entirely remotely through secure document exchange, video meetings and e-signature. Reviewing purchase records for self-assessment is a documents exercise, so remote handling costs nothing in quality.

**What does GST/HST filing cost in Maple Ridge?**

Nothing about a Maple Ridge address changes the fee. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month. A standalone return is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Maple Ridge itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Pitt Meadows, Albion, Silver Valley and Whonnock file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Maple Ridge businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
