# GST/HST filing in *Medicine Hat*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a Medicine Hat business runs one registration and one return. That removes half the complexity and concentrates the risk in three places: input tax credit records, the split between taxable and zero-rated sales, and anything sold across the Saskatchewan line. EverStone files GST for [Medicine Hat businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-medicine-hat) remotely.

**Quick answer:** Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, so a Medicine Hat business selling only within the province collects 5% GST and nothing else. Most farm products are zero-rated, so many local farms and growers file GST returns that produce refunds. The whole of a review turns on input tax credit documentation and on how each sale was classified. GST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

Medicine Hat GST files cover registration, the GST34 return or its electronic equivalent, input tax credits, zero-rated farm sales, reporting-period elections and CRA correspondence through My Business Account.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

Alberta is the outlier among the provinces. There is no provincial sales tax, which the CRA’s own rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A business selling only within Alberta charges 5% GST — one registration, one return, one administrator, and no non-recoverable provincial tax buried in its costs. Alberta does levy a separate tourism levy on accommodation, which matters to motels and short-term rentals, but it is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax.

That simplicity concentrates the exposure. In a two-tax province a review can go wrong in several directions. In Alberta it usually comes down to two questions: **can you support the [input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) you claimed**, and **did you charge the right rate on what you sold?** The position is tabled with its source on the [Alberta tax facts page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/alberta-tax-facts).

## Zero-rated farm sales and the refund return

Agriculture is central to the Medicine Hat economy — the City points to Alberta’s largest greenhouse cluster, irrigated cropland, pulse crops such as lentils and chickpeas, and livestock — and most basic farm and food products are zero-rated for GST. Zero-rated means taxable at 0%, not exempt. A registered farm or grower charges no GST on those sales but still claims input tax credits on the GST it pays for fuel, fertilizer, repairs, packaging, natural gas, custom work and equipment. For many local producers the GST return is a refund every period, which is cash worth claiming promptly.

Two things go wrong. A small producer under the $30,000 threshold never registers and so never recovers any GST on its costs, when voluntary registration would have produced refunds. And a producer with a mix of sales posts them all as zero-rated. Custom work for neighbours, equipment rentals, ornamental plants and flowers, and many prepared or processed items are generally taxable at 5%, and the distinction has to be made on each invoice. See [zero-rated versus exempt supplies](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/zero-rated-vs-exempt-supplies-gst-hst-canada) and [farm accounting in Medicine Hat](https://www.everstonecpa.com/farm-accountant-medicine-hat).

## What an input tax credit actually requires

A claim is not supported by the fact that money left the bank. The documentation has to identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, carry the supplier’s GST registration number. It has to show the amount of tax or enough information to calculate it, and it has to describe what was bought well enough that someone else can tell. A credit card statement showing a merchant name and a total meets none of those tests, and it is the most common category of claim disallowed on review.

Three further points recur in Medicine Hat files. Where a supplier is not registered, there is no GST to claim regardless of what the invoice says, and registration numbers can be verified. Where an expense is used partly for personal purposes — the farm truck, the shop that is also a garage, the home office — only the business proportion is claimable, and the apportionment should be recorded when the claim is made. And utility bills, including City of Medicine Hat gas and electric accounts, carry GST that a registrant can claim on the business share, provided the bill is in the business’s name or the allocation is documented. Our note on [what the CRA checks](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks) covers the ground in more detail.

## The complication arrives at the border

The one place Alberta’s simplicity ends is when you sell outward, and from Medicine Hat that usually means east. The rate follows the place of supply rather than your address. Sell into a harmonized province and you charge that province’s HST rate, not 5%. Sell goods or certain services into Saskatchewan, which has its own provincial sales tax, and a second question arises about whether you have obligations there too. A business that grows from local customers into regional ones and keeps invoicing at 5% accumulates an under-collection across every affected invoice, and the seller, not the customer, owes the difference. The [sales tax hub](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-hub) covers the place-of-supply rules.

## Reporting periods, the quick method and late filing

The CRA assigns a reporting period based on revenue, and smaller businesses can often elect to file less often. Annual filing reduces administration but means a larger single payment, while monthly filing can suit a farm or grower in a refund position, because the refund arrives sooner. The quick method is an option for some smaller service and retail businesses, but it rarely suits a business with large taxable purchases or zero-rated sales, so it should be tested rather than assumed. A late return with a balance owing attracts penalty and interest, and a return that is never filed holds up any refund behind it. See [changing your filing frequency](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/change-gst-hst-filing-frequency).

## What is covered

- GST registration, or review of your existing reporting period
- Returns prepared and filed on your assigned schedule
- Sales coded as taxable, zero-rated or exempt when recorded
- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them
- Supplier registration status confirmed where a claim depends on it
- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim
- Sales into Saskatchewan and other provinces checked against place of supply
- Returns reconciled to the ledger, and CRA correspondence handled

## Remote, and there is no Medicine Hat office

EverStone is a one-CPA firm that works online. There is no Medicine Hat office and no Alberta location. Medicine Hat businesses are served entirely online — records arrive through secure exchange, returns are reviewed by email or a short video call, and filings are approved by e-signature. One accountant holds the file, which keeps the documentation standard consistent from one period to the next rather than tightening only after a question is asked.

Common questions

## Medicine Hat GST questions

**Does Alberta have a provincial sales tax?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax. A separate tourism levy applies to accommodation, but it is a specific charge rather than a general sales tax on goods and services. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Do I charge GST on vegetables, grain or cattle?**

Generally no. Most basic farm and food products are zero-rated, so no GST is charged, but a registered producer can still claim input tax credits on its costs. Custom work, rentals and ornamental plants are generally taxable at 5%.

**Should a small farm or grower register for GST?**

Often, yes. Below the $30,000 threshold registration is voluntary, but a registered producer with zero-rated sales recovers GST paid on its inputs, which usually means a refund each period.

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including the GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the amount of tax or the information needed to calculate it, and a description of what was bought. A card statement showing a merchant and a total does not meet those requirements.

**What do I charge when I sell into Saskatchewan?**

GST still applies, and Saskatchewan’s own provincial sales tax may apply too, depending on what is sold and how it is delivered. That can bring a registration obligation in Saskatchewan. It is worth checking before the first invoice rather than after a year of them. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Is there an EverStone office in Medicine Hat?**

No. The firm works online and serves Medicine Hat businesses entirely remotely through email, video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature.

**Do you work with businesses outside Medicine Hat itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Redcliff, Dunmore, Cypress County, Bow Island and Brooks file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Medicine Hat businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a Medicine Hat business that charges GST, or a farm or grower that should be recovering it, and wants the filing handled. A business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold with no meaningful GST on its costs may not need to register at all; that is a decision worth making deliberately, and [worth an enquiry first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online).

## What happens when you get in touch

A Medicine Hat GST file is onboarded the same way as any other Alberta file, and on the same fixed fee.

- **A free first conversation.** By email or a short video call: what you sell, to whom and where, what is filed and what is overdue. You leave with a fixed fee in writing and no obligation to take it.

- **Access, in the first week.** We are [authorized with the CRA](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01), so GST balances, refunds held and notices get looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), your file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Missing returns filed oldest first, sales codes set up for each kind of supply, and the next twelve months of GST deadlines set before they arrive.

[Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online), or [ask one question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) — both go to a CPA, not a queue.
