# GST/HST filing in *Mission*

Registering late is the costliest sales tax mistake a growing Mission business makes: you owe tax you never charged. EverStone handles registration and filing for [Mission businesses](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-mission), remotely.

**Quick answer:** For Mission businesses, GST/HST registration becomes mandatory once a business exceeds $30,000 in taxable revenue over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that a business is a small supplier and may stay unregistered, but voluntary registration is often worthwhile where start-up or equipment purchases carry recoverable tax.

A rolling four-quarter test, not something you check in the spring.

## The threshold is a rolling test, not a year-end one

The rule is simple but widely misremembered. Registration becomes mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds **$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters**. That window rolls and is tested continuously. It is not your fiscal year, not a calendar year, and not something to check only at tax time.

A business growing through summer can cross the line in August and not notice until March, after seven months of invoices without GST. The business still owes the tax. Asking customers months later for 5% they were never billed turns a tax problem into a customer problem. Our [registration guide](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-registration-guide-small-business) covers the test and mechanics.

## Why voluntary registration is often the right call anyway

Below the threshold, registering is optional and often worthwhile. Registrants claim **[input tax credits](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html)** on GST paid, which can be substantial on first-year tools, equipment, vehicles and services. Small suppliers recover none.

The trade-off is usually smaller than it looks. Registering means charging GST and filing on schedule. If your customers are registered businesses, the GST costs them nothing because they claim it back, so voluntary registration is close to a free option. Selling to households is different: the 5% is a real price increase.

## Once registered: frequency, deadlines and the money that is not yours

Registration assigns a [reporting period](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/publications/rc4022.html) by annual taxable supplies. Monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after the period. Annual filers file and pay three months after year-end (March 31 for a December 31 corporation); a December 31 sole proprietor files by June 15 and pays by April 30. Annual filers with prior-year net tax of $3,000 or more owe [quarterly instalments](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-instalments-annual-filers-canada), often learned from a notice. See the [deadlines page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-filing-deadlines).

Build one habit from the first registered invoice: the GST in a deposit is not revenue. Move it to a separate account the day it arrives. Treating collected tax as working capital is the most common way a profitable small business ends up with a CRA balance it cannot clear.

## What is covered

- Monitoring taxable revenue against the rolling four-quarter threshold
- Registration with the CRA at the right time, or voluntary registration where it pays
- Reporting period selected and reviewed as the business grows
- Returns prepared and filed on schedule
- Input tax credits identified, including on start-up and equipment purchases
- Instalment obligations flagged for annual filers before a notice arrives
- BC PST registration considered separately where goods are sold

## Remote, with no Mission office

EverStone has no Mission location. A video call settles whether and when to register; records move securely and approvals by e-signature. The free [GST calculator](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-calculator) models what registration means for your prices.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

For a Mission business nearing $30,000, or a registrant wanting the right frequency and every input tax credit. Not for unreconciled figures: a return is only as good as its books. Fees are on [the published fee list](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

## Remote GST/HST filing

GST/HST filing for Mission clients is remote. **There is no Mission office and no local team.** Meetings are virtual, documents are e-signed, and you deal with the CPA directly. Returns come from the same bookkeeping as the corporate return, so sales figures agree.

Where the same file also needs [corporate returns for Mission owners](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-accountant-mission) and [the Mission personal tax page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-mission), that is handled in one engagement.

Businesses that also want [the Mission bookkeeping engagement](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeping-mission) and [getting the Mission returns filed](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-tax-accountant-mission) can have both quoted together.

Common questions

## GST registration questions

**When exactly does GST registration become mandatory?**

Once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. It is a rolling test applied continuously, which is why a business can cross mid-year and not notice for months. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What happens if I registered late?**

Generally the business owes the tax on sales after registration was required, though none was charged. Customers rarely pay it later, so it hits margin. Prompt correction is treated better than discovery.

**Is it worth registering before I have to?**

Often, especially in a first year with large equipment or start-up purchases, because registration makes that GST recoverable. It depends on your customers: registered businesses recover the tax you charge; for households it is a real price increase.

**Do annual GST filers have to make instalments?**

Yes, where prior-year net tax was $3,000 or more. The CRA expects quarterly instalments, not one payment at filing, and missing them creates instalment interest even if the balance is paid on time.

**Should collected GST be kept separate?**

It is the most useful habit available. The tax in every deposit is held for the Crown, not revenue. Moving it to a separate account on arrival means the money is there when the filing deadline comes.

**Do you have an office in Mission?**

No. The firm operates virtually and works with Mission businesses entirely remotely by video call, secure file exchange and e-signature. Registration in particular is almost all forms and account setup, which is faster handled online than in a meeting.

**What does GST/HST filing cost in Mission?**

Mission businesses pay the same published fees as everyone else. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $325 a month. A standalone return is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. [See the published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Do you work with businesses outside Mission itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Hatzic, Silverdale, Stave Falls and Deroche file on the same schedule and at the same fee as Mission businesses; nothing about the service depends on the municipality.
