# GST/HST filing in *St. Albert*

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a St. Albert business runs one registration and one return. That removes half the work and puts all the risk in one place: whether your input tax credits are backed by records that survive a review. EverStone files GST for St. Albert businesses remotely.

**Quick answer:** A St. Albert business selling within Alberta charges 5% GST and nothing else. Registration is required once taxable sales pass the $30,000 small-supplier threshold, returns are filed monthly, quarterly or annually as the CRA assigns, and a review of an Alberta registrant turns almost entirely on input tax credit documentation. GST/HST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month.

## One tax, and where the risk goes instead

Alberta is the outlier among the provinces: there is no provincial sales tax, which the CRA’s own rate table records as a provincial rate of nil. A business selling only within Alberta charges 5% GST, holds one registration, files one return and deals with one administrator. Alberta does levy a separate tourism levy on accommodation, which matters to a St. Albert hotel or short-term rental host, but it is a specific charge, not a general sales tax.

That simplicity concentrates the exposure. In a two-tax province a review can go wrong in several directions. In Alberta there is effectively one question, and it is on the purchase side: can you support the input tax credits you claimed? Contractors, manufacturers and distributors in St. Albert’s business districts buy a lot of equipment, materials and freight, so their credits are large, and large credits are what a reviewer reads first.

## Registering, and choosing a filing frequency

Registration becomes mandatory once your taxable sales pass the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Registering earlier is allowed and sometimes sensible, for a new business with large start-up purchases whose GST it wants back, but it means charging GST to customers from that point on, which matters if they are consumers who cannot recover it. The CRA assigns a reporting period based on your sales. Smaller businesses can often elect to file less often, which reduces work but means larger, less frequent payments. A business with regular refunds, such as an exporter or a company in a heavy buying phase, may prefer to file more often so the cash comes back sooner. The GST34 return itself is short. What takes the time is the reconciliation behind it.

## What an input tax credit actually requires

A credit is not supported by the fact that money left the bank. The documentation has to identify the supplier and, at the applicable thresholds, show the supplier’s GST registration number. It has to show the tax or enough to calculate it, and describe the supply well enough that someone else can tell what was bought. A credit card statement showing a merchant and a total meets none of those tests, and it is the most common category of claim disallowed on review.

Three further points recur in St. Albert files. Where a supplier is not registered there is no GST to claim, whatever the invoice says, and registration numbers can be checked before claiming. Where a vehicle, phone or home office is used partly for personal purposes, only the business share is claimable, and the share should be recorded when the claim is made. And credits do not have to be claimed in the period the tax was paid: there is a window, so a credit missed last year may still be recoverable. [What the CRA checks in a GST review](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/gst-hst-audit-what-cra-checks) covers the ground in more detail.

## The complication arrives at the border

Alberta’s simplicity ends when you sell outward, and St. Albert businesses do. The business districts along Anthony Henday Drive and the highways out of the region are home to distributors and manufacturers whose customers are across western Canada and beyond. The rate follows the place of supply rather than your address, so a sale delivered to an HST province carries that province’s HST rate, not 5%. A sale into a province with its own PST raises a second question about whether you have to register there too. A business that grows out of Alberta and keeps invoicing at 5% builds an under-collection across every affected invoice, and the seller, not the customer, owes the difference.

## Contractors, holdbacks and the timing of GST

A construction invoice usually carries GST on the full amount, including the holdback that will not be paid for weeks or months. When GST becomes payable on the holdback is a timing question with real cash consequences for a St. Albert contractor working on a large commercial or industrial job. We set it up correctly in the books so the return reflects it without anyone working it out by hand each period.

## What is covered

- GST registration, or a review of your existing reporting period

- Returns prepared from the reconciled ledger and filed on your schedule

- Input tax credits claimed against documentation that supports them

- Supplier registration numbers checked where a claim depends on it

- Business and personal apportionment recorded at the time of claim

- Rates checked against place of supply for sales made outside Alberta

- CRA correspondence, review letters and refund holds handled

## Fully online

EverStone is a fully virtual firm. There is no St. Albert office. Records arrive through secure upload, returns are reviewed with you by email or video and approved by e-signature, and filing is electronic through our CRA authorization. One accountant holds the file, which is what keeps the documentation standard consistent from one period to the next rather than tightening only after the CRA asks a question.

Common questions

## St. Albert GST questions

**Does a St. Albert business charge PST?**

No. Alberta charges 5% GST and no provincial sales tax. A separate tourism levy applies to accommodation, but it is not a general sales tax on goods and services. [Ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**What documentation supports an input tax credit?**

Enough to identify the supplier, including its GST registration number at the applicable thresholds, the tax or the information to calculate it, and what was supplied. A card statement showing a merchant and a total does not meet those requirements.

**When does my business have to register for GST?**

Once taxable sales pass the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. Registering earlier can make sense for a business with large start-up purchases, but it means charging GST from that point, so it is worth deciding deliberately.

**What rate do I charge selling outside Alberta?**

The rate for the place of supply, which generally follows the customer. Sales delivered to a harmonized province carry that province’s HST rate rather than 5%. Continuing to invoice at 5% leaves the seller owing the difference.

**What does GST filing cost for a St. Albert business?**

GST filing is included in monthly bookkeeping from $300 a month. If you only need the returns prepared from books you keep yourself, the fee is quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. See the [published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing).

**Is there an EverStone office in St. Albert?**

No. The firm is fully virtual and serves St. Albert businesses through email, video meetings, secure document exchange and e-signature.

**Do you file GST for businesses outside St. Albert itself?**

Yes. Registrants in Morinville, Gibbons, Bon Accord, Legal and Sturgeon County file on the same schedule and at the same fee as St. Albert businesses.

## Who this is for, and who it is not

This fits a St. Albert business that charges GST and wants the filing handled properly. It does not fit a business still under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold that has not decided whether to register: that is a decision worth making deliberately, and worth an enquiry first.

## What happens when you get in touch

A St. Albert GST file is onboarded the same way as any other, and on the same fixed fee.

- **An email first.** Tell us what the business does, what has been filed and what is late. A CPA replies within one business day with questions or a fixed fee in writing, and there is no obligation to take it.

- **Access in the first week.** You add us as your representative through CRA My Business Account ([Represent a Client](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01)), so notices, balances and slips are looked up rather than requested from you. If you are [switching firms](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants), the prior file is requested the same week.

- **Current, then ahead.** Books brought up to date, anything overdue scheduled oldest year first, and the next twelve months of federal and Alberta deadlines set out before they arrive.
