02 Which one do I need?

## Start with the situation you’re in

Three questions cover most first visits. Pick the one that sounds like you and the next page answers it.

[“I’m incorporated and want one CPA for the year-end, the T2 and the books.” That is the core of the practice. Start Here lays out the three ways in, what the first year looks like, and what it costs. Start here](https://www.everstonecpa.com/start-here)
[“I don’t know how much accounting I actually need.” Bookkeeper, controller or CFO is a scope question, not a title. This page sorts it by what your business does each month. Which level fits](https://www.everstonecpa.com/bookkeeper-controller-or-cfo)
[“I have a CRA letter, a deadline, or a year that never got filed.” Email what happened. A CPA reads it and replies within one business day with the next step and the fee, in writing. Email us what happened](https://www.everstonecpa.com/email-us)

Serving [Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford), [Chilliwack](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-chilliwack), [Langley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-langley), [Surrey](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-surrey), [Mission](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-mission) and, fully online, all of Canada.

04 Common questions

## Small business CPA — frequently asked

The three things owners ask first. [The full list is on the FAQ page](https://www.everstonecpa.com/faq).

**How much does a small business CPA cost?**

We use fixed-fee, no-surprise pricing. After we review your enquiry we quote a clear, upfront fee based on your needs — no hourly billing. As a guide: personal T1 returns start at $100, monthly bookkeeping from $300/month, a fractional controller from $1,500/month, and fractional CFO support from $2,500/month. Your fee depends on whether you need bookkeeping, tax filing, advisory or a full package. [See our fixed-fee pricing](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) or [ask about your case →](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question)

**Is it hard to switch from my current accountant?**

Not at all. We handle the handover for you — requesting your prior records and getting you set up, so switching to EverStone is smooth and takes very little of your time. [Send an enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online) to get started.

**Will I actually talk to a CPA, or get passed to a junior?**

You work directly with a Chartered Professional Accountant. Your file is handled start to finish by a CPA who knows your numbers, not passed down a chain of juniors. That direct relationship is the whole point of a boutique practice. You can check the registration yourself: [CPABC publishes a directory of registered firms in good standing](https://www.bccpa.ca/protecting-the-public/cpabc-member-firm-directories/).

05 What it costs

## You see the number before the work starts

Quoted in writing after we review your enquiry. Nothing begins until you say yes.

### [Personal tax](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes)

from $100

A [T1 return](https://www.everstonecpa.com/personal-taxes) for an owner, a contractor, or someone with [rental income](https://www.everstonecpa.com/rental-income-tax-return). Filed alongside the corporate year-end, not in isolation.

### [Monthly bookkeeping](https://www.everstonecpa.com/monthly-bookkeeping-services)

from $300/mo

[Books that close monthly](https://www.everstonecpa.com/monthly-bookkeeping-services) instead of being rebuilt each spring, with [GST and PST](https://www.everstonecpa.com/gst-hst-filing-services) kept as the separate taxes they are.

### [Fractional CFO](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo)

from $2,500/mo

For when bookkeeping stops answering the question. A [fractional controller](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contract-cfo), at $1,500 a month, sits between the two.

### [Corporate tax (T2)](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-return-t2)

quoted up front

The [T2 return](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-return-t2) with [year-end statements](https://www.everstonecpa.com/financial-statement-preparation-canada), e-filed, and the salary-versus-dividend call made before the year closes rather than after. [Estimate it without a call](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fee-estimate).

Four things move the corporate number, and none of them is a clock:

**Transaction volume** A consultancy with forty invoices isn’t a trades company with four hundred.

**Condition of the books** Clean books are a review. [A year nobody maintained](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping) is a rebuild.

**Number of filings** One GST registration, or GST and PST and [payroll](https://www.everstonecpa.com/payroll-services-canada) and [T5018s](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t5018-subcontractor-tracker).

**Whether there’s payroll** Source deductions, remittance dates and T4s are their own body of work.

### What if it turns out bigger than the quote?

You hear about it before it happens, not on the invoice.

If opening the books shows a worse year than the enquiry suggested, a missing quarter of GST or [two years rather than one](https://www.everstonecpa.com/behind-on-taxes-catch-up), we talk first and agree the revised number the same way we agreed the first. A quote that quietly grows isn’t a fixed fee.

Questions through the year are included in every engagement. An email in July about whether to buy the truck now or in January doesn’t generate an invoice. The questions people skip because of the meter are usually the ones worth asking. [See published fees](https://www.everstonecpa.com/pricing) or [get an estimate without a call](https://www.everstonecpa.com/fee-estimate).

06 Getting started

## Your first ninety days, in order

Most of what goes wrong in a first year is a sequencing problem. This is the order that avoids it.

1 Days 1–3

### [An email enquiry](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online)

Tell us what you do, what’s filed, and what’s overdue. You get a fixed fee in writing and no obligation. [Send it here](https://www.everstonecpa.com/book-online).

2 Week 1

### [Access and records](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01)

We’re authorized with the CRA, so notices and balances get looked up rather than requested from you. [Switching?](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants) Your file is requested the same week.

3 Weeks 2–4

### [Set up, or catch up](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping)

Books set up or brought current, the chart of accounts arranged so year-end reads properly, and [anything overdue](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping) scheduled oldest year first.

4 Days 30–90

### [Reports, then a plan](https://www.everstonecpa.com/management-reporting)

First monthly reports, the next twelve months of [deadlines](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cra-tax-deadlines) set, and the [decisions that belong before a year-end](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-planning-services-canada) made while there’s still time.

07 Already have an accountant

## You don’t have to wait for a year-end

People stay somewhere they’ve outgrown because they think moving is disruptive. It takes three steps.

1 A few minutes

### [You authorize us](https://www.everstonecpa.com/forms/aut-01)

One CRA form, signed electronically. You don’t have to explain it to anyone, and you don’t need to have a reason ready.

2 Same week

### [We request your file](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants)

A courtesy between firms. You never make that call yourself, and nobody asks you why you’re leaving.

3 From there

### [We pick up](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping)

From the last filed year-end, with the books brought current. Nothing gets re-done that doesn’t need re-doing.

### You don’t need a complaint

Businesses outgrow an arrangement for ordinary reasons.

The firm that suited a sole proprietorship isn’t always right for [a corporation with payroll](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-return-t2), and a practice that has grown may have moved your file to someone you’ve never met. Neither is a reason to stay.

And if the books are behind, that’s not a reason to put it off. It’s usually the reason to move. [Catch-up work is quoted separately](https://www.everstonecpa.com/catch-up-bookkeeping), so you can see what clearing the backlog costs before you commit to it. [How switching actually goes](https://www.everstonecpa.com/switching-accountants).

08 The year

## Four dates, and none of them should surprise you

An incorporated business runs on a handful of fixed dates. We hold the calendar so you don’t have to.

All year **Books that close monthly** Not rebuilt each spring. What you draw out lands in [one shareholder loan account](https://www.everstonecpa.com/shareholder-loan-tracker), so the year-end call is a decision, not an excavation.

Last day of February **The slips** [T4, T4A and T5 slips](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t-slip-deadlines) filed and in people’s hands. The date doesn’t move for a small employer, and the penalty is per slip.

2–3 months after year-end **The balance owing** Earlier than the return, which is due at six. Most owners hear the six-month date and assume it covers both. [Work out both dates](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t2-deadline-calculator).

Before the year closes **The decisions** How you’re paid, whether a bonus is accrued, whether the equipment is bought this side of the year-end. Once the money moves, most of it can’t be undone.

### What missing one costs

None of it is dramatic on its own. It’s just money you had no reason to spend.

File the [T2](https://www.everstonecpa.com/corporate-tax-return-t2) late and the penalty is **5% of the balance owing plus 1% for every complete month**, up to twelve ([work out yours](https://www.everstonecpa.com/late-filing-penalty-calculator)). If you were charged it in any of the three previous years, it doubles to 10% plus 2% a month.

Interest runs separately, at [the CRA’s prescribed rate](https://www.everstonecpa.com/tax-update/prescribed-interest-rates), and it isn’t deductible. Slips carry their own penalty, charged [per slip](https://www.everstonecpa.com/t-slip-deadlines). [Every CRA deadline in one place](https://www.everstonecpa.com/cra-tax-deadlines), if you’d rather see the whole calendar.

09 Fit

## Who this is for, and who it isn’t

An honest answer saves everyone a meeting.

### This fits you

Incorporated owner-managers. [Contractors and trades](https://www.everstonecpa.com/contractor-accountant), [realtors](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-realtors) and [professional corporations](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-incorporated-professionals), [truckers and owner-operators](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-truckers), [e-commerce sellers](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-for-ecommerce), [construction companies](https://www.everstonecpa.com/construction-accounting-bc).

Businesses past doing the books themselves and nowhere near needing a finance department. People who want **one CPA on the file** from first email to filed return, who’d rather know the fee than discover it, and who want an answer when they ask a question rather than a meeting request. [See how it has gone for others](https://www.everstonecpa.com/case-studies).

### This fits you less well

If you want the cheapest possible filing and nothing else. A return prepared without a conversation is a cheaper product and some firms do it well. This isn’t that.

Or if you genuinely need an **audit**. Most owner-managed companies don’t, and [finding out what your bank will actually accept](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-or-review-what-you-need) is often the biggest saving on the table. Where a real audit is required, [a compilation isn’t it](https://www.everstonecpa.com/compilation-engagement-canada), and you want a firm set up for assurance work.

Not sure which one you are? That’s what an enquiry is for. Or [ask a question first](https://www.everstonecpa.com/quick-question) if you’d rather not book anything yet.

10 How it runs

## Working with us from anywhere in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba

The firm is based in [Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford). Almost none of the work needs you to come to it.

**Send what you have** A bank feed connected once, photos of receipts, or a shoebox scanned in one go. Nothing gets re-typed into a system you don’t use.

**Sign and file online** Signatures are electronic and filings go to the CRA directly. No printing, no courier, no waiting on a signature page.

**Talk when it’s useful** An email on a Tuesday, or a video consultation before a year-end decision. Not a standing appointment for its own sake.

**Records stay where they belong.** Your documents are kept for the [six years CRA expects](https://www.everstonecpa.com/blog/cra-record-retention-how-long-to-keep-records), in one place rather than scattered across an email thread, and they are yours to ask for at any time. If you ever leave, you take the file with you. That’s how it should work, and it’s worth saying out loud because it often isn’t.

Fraser Valley clients tend to meet once and then never need to again. A business in never needs to come to the office at all, and it doesn’t change the work. What distance doesn’t change is who does it: the same CPA prepares and reviews the file, and answers when you ask.

**Where we work:** [Abbotsford](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-abbotsford) · [Chilliwack](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-chilliwack) · [Mission](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-mission) · [Langley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-langley) · [Surrey](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-surrey) · [Maple Ridge](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-maple-ridge) · [Aldergrove](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-aldergrove) · [Fraser Valley](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-fraser-valley) · [Vancouver](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-vancouver) · [Victoria](https://www.everstonecpa.com/accountant-victoria)
